Largely the efforts of one person, as far as I can tell, and I'm having a real good time with Lunark. Heavily inspired by Flashback, but also the original Prince of Persia and Another World. Those are good things to be name-checking. I'm only an hour in, but right now this is scratching the itch that playing the recent(ish) Flashback remaster didn't quite manage. Check out the launch trailer and tell me that doesn't give you the feels for the days of yore! www.youtube.com/watch?v=mU1fn-uJULI

That's Flashback alright, down to the animations even. Though I'm kinda put off by the very low-res pixel art.

If you eat two tubs of Bertolli in one sitting you have flashbacks. True fact.

It's just slightly too low res and small for me. It's lower res than og flashback which I don't understand.

I quite like it tbf. Although I wonder how much it'll be on PSN as it's not showing there yet. If it's £15 - £20 it can wait.

It was £16 on Xbox. The visuals looks great on a big TV I’d have to say. The red hasn’t bugged me. It feels epic and retro and a bit new but mainly retro.

I’m enjoying it. It uses the classic flashback controls to make more explicitly “puzzly” levels which works well. I liked what I saw of the art style before I started playing but actually now it makes me miss the luscious flashback graphics.
I’m finding the fact that most interactions with characters / objects are just kickstarter backer shoutouts a bit of a mood killer (it feels like most of the characters portraits are digitised photos of backers which takes me out of it too)

Welp, I wrapped it up this morning. It was the Flashback I have in my heart rather than the reality (as I discovered replaying the remastered) and when the visuals and the level design and the controls all gelled it was really excellent. But when they don't, it's fucking exasperating. Oh, and Quick Resume doesn't work. And if you exit a level, the "saved progress" will be at the very very start of that level. So finish a level before signing off for a session.
At a dozen levels it certainly doesn't outstay its welcome, but there are three or four sequences in there that I'd like to fire into the sun. The arbitrary "checkpoints" -which aren't even overtly signposted - don't really deserve the name. It's a game that wants you to memorise its layouts and enemy patterns to get that One True Run through a section. In realty, when I look back, none of the sections were overly long but in the moment if the controls let you down, or you do something stupid, being thrown back to the beginning of a segment sucks hard.
Replay value isn't really a thing here, except to play it for its own sake, although I am narked that I missed a little over half of the secret zones so that might bring me back. I'm usually quite observant and adept at sniffing out secrets, but the first one I found here about an hour in was the fourth in the game!
I'd give it a cautious 7/10, +2 points for expertly evoking its inspirations, and -2 for the times I had to repeat something that I really didn't enjoy enough to want to repeat (train level, I'm looking at you).
Even with its quirks, I'd play another game from the same person (/people) in a heartbeat. So that says something about its quality, I think.
