I saw a French rider with brake problems take his right foot out of his pedal and push his heel to his rear tyre to slow down enough for a 90 degree turn.

Sorry for MvdP who had tried so hard, and possibly even more so for the young lad being beaten by colbrelli who'd just been making up the numbers and saving energy almost all the way.

Course was even worse than it was for the women's race and seeing 3 mud men arrive at the end was surreal, especially where the drinks had cleared the mouths so it looked like a face mask. I'd have got off my bike long before he end!
