Turns out Aussie tears are still just as sweet even in women’s sports 🥲

Have a feeling the ref was putting the Aussies out of their misery there, blowing on the strike of six minutes was a tad early really with all the time wasting.

Good result, some good play and Australia needs a defence because some of the defending was appalling.

I'm always happy when England Women win, for about 20 seconds until Sweet Caroline starts playing, then I hope they never win again.

Superb performance! Smart and assured apart from one wonder strike. The aussies looked a pace behind and think the France game took it out of them.

So good we have a great women's team and now even a mens team to be proud of. If sweet Caroline is the price we must pay then so be it haha.

I don’t really follow football, let alone women’s but I think it’s down to having better conditioned pony tails, cuter ankles and slightly better refined deportment.

Its crazy to think that one of the hosts (Fara Williams) was literally homeless and living in a hostel while playing for England and now she gets to see players she played with reach a World Cup final as reigning European Champions.

Not really. It's been coming. They hit WC semi finals in the last decade, so they were hardly terrible. The continued (paltry compared to men's game) investment in the WPL, Champion's League and international tournaments is definitely raising the bar year-on-year as more teams can field full-time players. More and more attending games, especially sellout crowds at internationals. The 2022 Euros being in UK definitely cranked the hype more than other tourneys. Similarly having the WC in Aus/NZ is a good marketing move. Aus has gone bonkers for it in particular.

I think the London Olympics is the real turning point. That coincides with Man City’s big investment in their women’s team which forced the other bigger sides to become more professional or form women’s teams.

The formation of the WSL is big obviously (even if it did fuck over historically important clubs like Doncaster Belles) but I do think its City and the Olympics that are the real catalyst. Look at the spine of the England team through the 2010s and they’re all there in those two events laying the foundations for what we’ve got now.

Not quite the same as being in Spain while England play them in a final I was in a sports bar in Sydney during the Rugby World Cup Final in 1999, me and my three English friends were the only people in it supporting France. For those don't know/can't remember who they were playing it was Australia. We never expected the locals to be upset by the end though and Australia won by a lot but we weren't too miffed as we had a fuckton of Bundy and cokes.
