Gigs!

My first gig was seeing Dodgy. I was 16 and went with a mate after the girl I invited turned me down. /over it now

They were playing a small venue in Worcester which meant you could get really close to the stage. At one point, a guy actually climbed up, shook Nigel’s hand and then jumped back into the pit. Totally chilled and friendly - I don’t think there was any security!

They had Scouse Britpoppers Cast as their support act, who I came away thinking were really good too. This was just before Cast’s first album and during Dodgy’s ‘Homegrown’ album era - 1994/5.

I still rate Dodgy as my favourite guitar band (not sure I’d call them Britpop - they were - are - better than that) and that very intimate concert is right up there with Oasis at Knebworth in ‘96 and the Prodigy in ‘97 (right after Fat of the Land released) as one of the best gigs I’ve ever been to.

Have to admit, I’d have loved to have seen Bowie.

I do regret not seeing The Stone Roses when they were in their heyday. I went to see Ian Brown doing his solo show since, and while he was good and did perform lots of Roses songs, it wasn’t the same.

I had this conversation with my Dad once, and he simply told me that he did see the Beatles in the 60’s, so basically has no regrets. I figured that was fair enough.

I went to an Oasis gig at Wembley stadium where people were throwing pints of piss in the air. Fun.

Best gigs I've been to are FKJ at the roundhouse. That man is very talented and Childish Gambino at the 02. That was a spectacle and a half. Watching Robert Glasper get drunk while playing the piano was good fun too.

Worst gigs were Public Enemy and Yasin Bey, not for the songs, but the acoustics were off so it wasn't enjoyable.

oooh Gigs! Should probably be another thread, but hey ho and there's not that many of us regular posters, so not like the thread will fill up.

First gig was Kiss at Edinburgh playhouse on the crazy nights tour in 1989 I think. Ooof.

Gig regrets-wise I have two. I didn't see Radiohead play the Bends in a tiny club because a mate though creep was shit. He also regretted that decision to stop us going not long after he heard the new lp for the first time.

The second gig also involves Radiohead by some cosmic coincidence. They played here on the ok computer tour, but in the days before the internet, it had sold out before I'd even heard they were playing. I truly regret missing this because it had DJ Shadow and the Beastie's as support acts.

I never saw the Beasties, whom I adore, and now I never will.

Pretty sure the first cassette I ever bought was Bone Thugs n Harmony: Crossroads.

I would've been 6 or 7

My first gig was Dimmu Borgir when I was 15 (1997) in a small local venue. Opening act was an up and coming band called In Flames.

My first gigs were all local ones featuring bands that I don't think made the big time. I think my first real gig was seeing Lynyrd Skynyrd at somewhere like Brixton 

First gig was Blur at the NIA, with Super Furry Animals opening for them.

Album - The Housemartins, Hull 4 London 0
Single - No idea, maybe Peter Gabriel, Sledgehammer
Gig - Billy Bragg, but that was a sit down affair. I think first proper one was Happy Mondays, Bradford. Can't remember much about it, apart from Shaun Ryder spent most of it sitting on the drum riser drinking Red Stripe.
Gig regret - Jesus and Mary Chain on the Automatic tour, went the pub instead or something.. really dont know why.

As an aside, we stayed in a hotel last night and the ambient music in the foyer included Guns N'Roses and The Cure.

First single was 'Burning Heart' by Survivor (from Woolies), although I think I might have had 'Ant Rap' before that,
but bought for me.

Can't remember the first album - possibly Hits 3, but the Ghostbusters Soundtrack was one of the earliest ones I recall purposefully getting. Likely preceding those, I recall going into town with my Grandparents and coming back with an album on cassette called 'Midnight Dynamos' by a band called Matchbox. I still have no idea why I chose that - I suspect it was in a bargain bin and I was allowed to pick one.

Gig regrets: missing out on Judas Priest on their Painkiller tour with Annihilator.

I was a bit of a late starter to actually buying music.
First record I actually bought myself was Public Enemy You Bum Rush The Show. I read about it and decided that's what I wanted to get into. Found a copy in a record store about 2 hrs away. Jumped on a bus. It changed my music tastes forever.
