Album: The Only Way is Up - Yazz. Not proud of that one. My tastes did improve..... Yazz worked with Coldcut, who are/were uber-cool and set up ninja tune, so it's a decent start!

Single: Ghostbusters - Ray Parkour Jr which I bought with a record token I won in a dancing competition. I did the robot. I also got a kiss off Miss Yorkshire (even though it was in Lincoln). Album: The Only Way is Up - Yazz. Not proud of that one. My tastes did improve..... At least we know who to call next time there is a dance battle with another forum.

First single: David Bowie - ashes to ashes
First album,: the police - zenyatta mondatta
After typing that I realise this is just a subtler version of the "how old you are" thread and I now feel positively ancient

I was also bit of a latecomer to music.
First album: Violator by Depeche Mode (circa 2003/4). Personal Jesus always played in one of the RC missions in GTA San Andreas and I think I'd heard it so much that I went out and bought the album from HMV.
Not quite sure on the single.

I think I was 12, just received a Philips portable radio with double cassette deck for Christmas and we went to Metro.
I had never paid attention to music in my entire life up to this point and I got to choose a cassette, so I had something to play on my now radio.
NOW this is music.... Volume 1x
(Could be 12, 13, 19... I don't remember).

First album I bought with my own money was the Mortal Kombat movie soundtrack.
It features some score, that theme song plus songs by bands like Type O Negative, Fear Factory, Napalm Death.
I was obsessed with Mortal Kombat at the time.

Public library in Brussels had about 100.000 cds, so there was a lot of copying to tape early on. I think I was 16 when I actually bought my first albums, it was Homework by Daft Punk and Beaucoup Fish by Underworld. Solid picks looking back.

Don’t think I ever bought a single but first album was Tears for Fears - Seeds of Love.
Think I like it now more than I did then.

T U R T L E Power by Partners in Kryme.
If pushed, I could probably still sing most of it. I was obsessed with Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles.

I think the first single I ever bought was Metallica - The Memory Remains, after seeing them perform it on on TOTP (No, really, that is a thing that happened)
It was the UK blue cover version, not that red cover US version that seems to be more prevalent.
First track was The Memory Remains, second track was a slightly different version of The Outlaw Torn, third track was a remix of King Nothing by KMFDM.
Pretty sure I bought it in Woolworths. This would have been around 1997, apparently.

Load/Re-Load is still my favourite era of Hetfield vocals. So much bite and swagger.

I didn't really buy any as a kid or teen, normally just sponging off my brothers' Britpop albums.
But...
First single - haven't ever bought any, but definitely was gifted Mr. Blobby for the Christmas that it reached no. 1
First album - think it was Smurfs Go Pop, again bought for me one Christmas. First album I actually bought myself was probably the first Britney Spears.
As someone else said in this thread, someone should really warn you that these choices stay with you...

I think most people's first single was probably a christmas novelty single. Not sure xmas presents count... though I guess it depends whether you put them on your xmas list first.

I remember that ToTP performance. Always liked it when something really metal appeared on the show. I had the single too, but think it must have been the alternative version, as it had a demo (?) version of Fuel as a B-Side.

First single I can remember buying was… (sigh) Breakfast at Tiffany’s by Deep Blue Something.
Those youngsters had a long career ahead of them.
