Of course not because a large amount of people will buy the Red Dead remaster. People never learn.

They added another episode to Quake 1 too - some mad lad converted all the DM-only levels to a campaign. It's called Deathmatch Dimension. Check the add-ons menu!

Oh, I didn't know there is a Quake 1 remaster! I retract my statement then. Oh yeah. I thought you were aware, and talking about the RTX version, since you mentioned it being the best way to play 2. They even got the old NIN score back for the remaster!

I'm amazed at the price, the content you get for it and the disparity between it and Red Dead 1. They even give it away for free to owners of the original version. I knew buying it super cheap a few months ago would pay off. Not that 10 euro wouldn't be a great price too, but that's just icing on the cake. Physical versions from LRG coming as well, nice. And a vinyl soundtrack. I still have my big box on the shelf, one of the few I kept around. Of course it's next to the Q1 big box. They added another episode to Quake 1 too - some mad lad converted all the DM-only levels to a campaign. It's called Deathmatch Dimension. Check the add-ons menu! Damn, total respect. I wonder if more Q2 content will be added later. The game never had the same amount of fan-made single player maps and campaigns as Q1. I guess most of the community was entrenched on the multiplayer.

This thread was the first I knew about the Q2 remaster as well (at least, it being confirmed). Didn't realise it was free to everyone that already owned it on Steam, same with the Q1 remaster.

Wonder how this will feel after starting a playthrough of the RTX version a while back...
Although IIRC RTX still doesn't support the expansions.

Fucking hell I forgot how fast it was, and how good the soundtrack is. It’s been sooooooo long.

Just loaded this up and was having fun until it glitched out on me. Was playing on Xbox, and not sure if the PC version is the same but there’s a lot of pausing while it loads in the next area. Got stuck on an area load while going down and elevator, and when it stopped loading, the elevator was already on the way back up so I tried to step off quickly, and instead I walked off the map. Tried reloading an autosave and it saved while I was off the map, so I’ll need to restart it.

It’s on everything. Played the Xbox version because it’s free with GamePass (Bethesda and all, so not actually surprising) but yeah. Can get it for PS5, or even Switch if you’d rather have it portably.
It takes me awhile to get used to not holding LT/L2/ZL to aim down the sights.

Looks great for all the extra content, but I do already have RTX. For the base game, that still feels like the best way to play a modernised version (if you can run it). I love the RTX version for what it is, but it was always intended as a tech demo to showcase the effects of pathtraced lighting and as such has a completely different look from the original game. I doubt even Nvidia themselves would argue that it's the definitive way to play Quake II.

There are slightly more enemies (at least when playing on hard difficulty), they are more eager to come at you, and especially, switching guns a lot faster, making the action quicker overall. I like what they have done with this remaster, it actually improves on the original the game imo, which was always a little slow coming from Quake.

Apparently the two regular expansions have 33 levels between them, with an additional 28(!) in the Machine Games episode. Not even including the N64 version then that’s… a lot of extra levels.

I doubt even Nvidia themselves would argue that it's the definitive way to play Quake II. Maybe should have said it was MY preferred way to play (although I doubt I'm alone with that). If I'm going to play Quake 2, I'm either going to go for the original version (for nostalgia) or the RTX one. Tech demo maybe and ever so often there are moments that don't look right, but 90% of the time it looks absolutely gorgeous. With retro shooters a popular indie genre right now, it makes me wish someone would make a game from the ground up in a Quake 2 style using path tracing, as it works surprisingly well. Obviously, only the few people with 40 series cards or a very highend 30 series card would be able to play it, so unlikely to be a very profitable game to work on.

I've ploughed through a chunk between last night and a pre-work session this morning. It feels so effortless to play. What I love is all the wee tweaks and upgrades only serve to subtly enhance the original experience, and not change it enough so it becomes jarring. Even the models, like Q1, are very slight upgrades when they could have easily gone more to town. It all looks and feels how I remember it, yet I know that in reality it actually looks and feels better.
I'm also reminded how much I was terrified of Gladiators, and I totally forgot medics were a thing. Gib all bodies!
Oh, and I also completely forgot that it wasn't quite linear, with each section broken into 4 or 5 areas you go back and forth between as your objectives get updated.
Utterly brilliant stuff. Worth waiting for. Nightdive come good again. I almost forgive them for no console release date of System Shock yet. Almost.

Don't expect too much from the expansions though. Unless they tweaked then extensively, they are not "just okay" like the Q1 expansions. Reckoning at least could be considered so, but Ground Zero is a lot worse and actively attempting to annoy the player. Might even sour you on the game. I really hope they fixed them up.

I had both back in the day and don't recall not liking them particularly. I'll see how they hold up when I get on to them.

Nice to have a remastered quake 2 that isn't fuck ugly like the RTX one.
Plays great, they've clearly beefed up the AI as well. Those Beserkers are fucking lethal with those jump attacks they've got now.

Yeah the ai is certainly more than it was. I had a gunner jump down behind me earlier that was a bit of a shock. Seems easier to get them fighting each other now as well. Arrrrgh it’s so good. I want to just sack work off and play it all day.

Yeah enemies got beefed up a lot. They can jump down and chase you now. Medics are much more common (at least on hard anyway). Berserkers can jump attack, Tanks can shoot more bullets and will even bait you into peeking from the corners before shooting again, Enforcers can track you more easily with their machineguns, etc. And there are more enemies overall.
Not gonna lie, I love it.

It’s so long since I tried playing an FPS like this using a controller. I might get the hang of it soon (and yes I have the motion control aim enabled).
I miss the days of me being able to play with M+K.

I would buy a remastered Q4 no bother. It’s got it’s issues but I still think it’s a solid game.
