There's so much I haven't completed yet from bichii2 's list: BG3, RE4, ACVI, Diablo 4, LOTF, Lies of P...I'm very close to finishing the last and it will likely end up being my runner-up GOTY if I do finish it, unless the final area or two completely ruins it (seems unlikely). But Wo Long was the game that I enjoyed the most. It doesn't out-Nioh Nioh, but it comes close. And it helped that it came out of nowhere for me, with zero hype. Lu Bu can fuck off, though. As usual. It certainly doesn't ruin it, but there's a slight chance the final boss will test your rage-quit levels to their limits...

As I haven't played anything this year that has lived up to expectations, I couldn't care less about the result. It will either be the best of the games I haven't played or the least worst of the ones I have. So as far as I'm concerned you can put all the names in a hat and shove it up your arse draw one at random and that's as good an answer as any. It's a valid point. I was going to make a thread earlier actually, inspired by AW2. I'm going to do it. Here I go.

Main contenders so far from releases this year:
TotK Mario Wonder Lies of P
Would like to play BG3, AC6, AW2, Jedi Survivor, RE4, Phanton Liberty, Spiderman 2 and Hogwarts. Feel like I should have played more recent releases really.
Competed Starfield and Diablo 4 but not contenders for me.
Games from other years I got round to are Cyberpunk, Mario Odyssey, Plaguetale Requiem, Dishonoured 2, the Medium, The Council and Walking Dead.
Leaning on Lies of P so far even though I think it’s a bit too hard.
Mario Wonder was a joy so close second.
TotK while extremely good with a great ending and slightly better dungeons didn’t feel as magical as BoTW.

I think I only played 5 new games this year, so a top 5:
1. Baldur's Gate 3 I still haven't actually finished it yet, but it's been a long time since a game has absolutely destroyed my life in this way. It is the most immersive immersive sim I've ever played: to an overwhelming degree.
2. Armored Core 6: Fires Of Rubicon This wins most fun game. It feels like a game that is completely comfortable with the medium and nails it's design mission. It's ludicrous and joyous. Technically flawless too.
3. Zelda Mad that I preferred this to BOTW and gave it 10/10 but it's still 3rd on the list. It's a true marvel of a game, but the Zelda world and lore leave me completely cold.
4. Diablo 4 Obsessed by this for 1 season and never felt compelled to go anywhere near it ever again! Weird.
5. Harry Potter Very solid, cosy, visually quite breath-taking but ultimately dull and if you play it you go to hell, obviously.
Lies of P, Lords of The Fallen, Spiderman 2, Alan Wake 2, Phantom Liberty, Mario, Pikmin, Dredge, Amnesia: The Bunker, System Shock, Robocop don't make the cut cos I ain't played em yet.

So far this year, I'd go with the below. I'd have Lies of P on there but I'm waiting for the patch, and maybe my OLED Steam Deck. Octopath Traveler 2 and Remnant 2 almost got on here as well, it's been a tough one getting this down to three.
Hi-Fi Rush - I've never been so happy to be wrong about a game. A strong idea deftly executed and a delight throughout.
Armored Core 6 - it plays like how I remember Armored Core playing. Once I got through the nostalgia, I was still left with incredibly fun movement, a huge variety of weapons and tactics and a game which overall doesn't feel like a chore running through the requisite three times to get the best ending.
Fate Samurai Remnant - a great mix of Musou gameplay, pure Fate fanservice and a sharp script kept me playing this one. Possibly my favourite of the Omega Force licensed games.
Special mentions for stuff that didn't come out this year: Astlibra Revision - a properly epic side-scrolling action RPG in the vain of Ys 3. Time travel's only the start of where this game ends up going. Evil West - I love a game which knows what it's doing. Evil West knows what it's doing and provides the distilled essence of a 360-era mid budget action game. Talking positively about it feels like damning it with faint praise but I really did enjoy it. Harvestella - I don't normally go for farming type games but this one, for me, delivers what Rune Factory promised and the story goes places that you don't expect. Cracking Go Shiina soundtrack too.

Diablo 4 is a strange one I must admit. It was like crack when I first played I, but once I had completed the main quest my enthusiasm drained massively, especially my enthusiasm to reach lv100 it felt incredibly grindy in how glacial levelling up actually is and also how it seems to be made by people who seemed to completely miss the fact that Diablo works well by giving you a power fantasy which doesn't really help when they nerfed the shit out of anything that was actually fun.

Ride 5. Granted, it's the only 2023 game I've played other than Starfield, but it's really good. It's a little divisive among players but to me it's clearly better than Ride 4, mostly thanks to more grounded/realistic handling and physics.
Career mode is sadly a downgrade, as it's purely linear now. But given how little time I spend in career mode, I can live with that. Overall I'm pretty happy with it, best motorcycle game I've ever played.

Still early on in the game but probably Spiderman 2. Absolutely loving it so far.

SF6 Mario Wonder Lies Of P
They also happen to be some of the handful of games I played this year that I can definitively remember came out in 2023.

RE4R
Easy choice, although I suppose I haven't played Wonder yet. I'm not holding out much hope for P5 tactica, but you never know...

I'd be tempted to say the Quake II Remaster, if only because of the sheer level of care and effort that obviously went into it.

RE4R Easy choice, although I suppose I haven't played Wonder Would recommend. I was playing it last night, picked up a wonderseed and gasped in delight at its effect. I was simultaneously elated and as ashamed of myself as I’ve ever been.

It probably speaks volumes that the main ones that were really enjoyable for me were Stray and Turnip Boy Commits Tax evasion. Hi-fi rush was a lot of fun, but I parked it for Diablo and should get back to it.
Diablo 4 & Starfield were ones i was really looking forward to, but were both ok, yet disappointing & somewhat unsatisfying in different ways.

So games that I've played that were actually released in the last year (plus or minus a couple weeks). Phantom Liberty, System Shock, Baldur's Gate 3, Boltgun, Age of Wonders 4, possibly Dwarf Fortress & Victoria 3 since this time last year. Plus whatever DLC came out for Total Warhammer 3 and various Paradox games.
As yknow I actually finally played Metal Gear Solid 5 and Dragon Age 1+2 over the summer. Steam sales.
So obviously if Dwarf Fortress is included it's the best game as it is the best game. That aside:
Baldur's Gate 3: best game. It's just fucking amazing as a game. Phantom Liberty: Best narrative/cinematic experience/acting kind of thing. It's not as good a game as BG3, but it's written with more pathos and performed that way as well.
Honourable Mention: System Shock. It's a remake, but it's a remake of an absolute classic and with all the dumb ass controls sorted out.

Well, looks like I haven't played a single 2023 game this year. First time that's ever happened I think. Best games I have played this year would include Returnal (the winner), The Forgotten City, Stray, Haven, Ghost of Tsushima and Sunless Sea.

BG3 is a game of ambition that you have to acknowledge it. No wonder you heard reports of devs worried about it setting too high expectations. Of course not every game has to be like that, smaller polished experiences are just fine too, but it is something that hopefully other studios can take lessons from and we get more games shooting for the stars like it does.

I've only played 4 games from 2023 so far. Hi-Fi Rush (pretty good overall), Destiny 2 Lightfall (disappointing), System Shock (very nice, but the original remains my favorite), and Quake 2 Remastered (does this even count?). Though I think I'll get myself some Game pass and get around to playing Jusant, Bramble and Cocoon very soon.

Just realised I didn't finish a single game this year. But it was BG3 by a MILE, with levels 1-45 in Diablo 4 being the runner up.

BG3, innit.
Though I can't remember a single game I played first half of 2023. I must have played something.

Zelda has to be top of the tree for me, though Spiderman 2 has been everything I wanted and (bugs aside, which haven't been game breaking) is a very accomplished game. Marvel Snap has to be my most played though so gets a mention. Apart from a week off for Glastonbury, I think I have played it every day. Yeah me too re snap. Obsessed with it. I dare to think how many hours I've spent on it
