Should you really get recognition for bringing a game up to a standard that should've been there in the first place? Let's not forget it was in such a state that Sony took the unprecedented step of pulling it from their store.

As things stand for me…
1. Tears of the Kingdom 2. Resident Evil 4 3. Jusant 4. Planet of Lana 5. Metroid Prime Remastered
I’ve not played much that came out this year, but Gamepass has seemingly kept me in the loop of modern gaming far more than I could normally manage. Cocoon was another lovely little puzzle adventure game that I think just misses my top 5, on reflection.

Definitely Lies Of P. Unlike so much software these days it arrived complete, bug free and ran slick as hell. And oh what a beautiful world and atmosphere within which to experience a Souls clone that easily matched its inspiration. A massive pleasent surprise.

I agree that Cyberpunk doesn't deserve a place on that list, as CDPR simply brought the game to the standard in which it should've launched to begin with. Yes, the expansion seems to be very good, but it was a paid product (unlike all the No Man's Sky updates, which were free). As for not releasing on the "old consoles", CP2077 was originally announced in May 2012 - at that point, the PS4 and the Xbox One were unreleased, next-gen machines! It was always scheduled to launch on those platforms, and the failure to make sure it ran properly on them was CDPR's alone. The quality of life improvements *are* in the main game too though, it's not like the revamped systems are locked behind the expansion.
It's the only thing I've really played from this year, this year, so almost by default it has to be GOTY for me. Everything else I've played for the first time this year has been 2+ years old, and whilst most of them were enjoyable I can't say I've enjoyed them anywhere near as much as 2077.
but it's probably the most I've enjoyed a game for a very long time. Can't think of anything I've enjoyed this much and felt this engaged with since... probably since Skyrim.
Maybe other 2023 games are better, I'll get back to you in 2035-ish

The expansion is big enough to be a game release at that price. It was excellent and definitely the best release of the year for me alongside aw2.

Not if you're playing on PS4 and Xbox One - like the expansion, the 2.0 patch is current-gen only.
I'm not opposed to giving CDPR a bit of credit for all they've achieved with Cyberpunk, and I'm looking forward to buying it myself once the PS5 retail version comes out, but I think nominating them for an award is a bit much.

Surprised no-one has mentioned the System Shock Remake, given it seemed very popular on here at the time.

Cyberpunk was just released too early. You can tell so much care has gone into the game. It doesn't excuse the way it was released though and I agree they don't deserve a pat on the back for getting it up to standard. As it is now though, it's an outstanding accomplishment

I'd pretty much forgotten about System Shock Remake, for the exact reason Wunty mentioned.
My guess is they'll bundle SS and SS2 together for a console release at some point.

There's so much I haven't completed yet from bichii2 's list: BG3, RE4, ACVI, Diablo 4, LOTF, Lies of P...I'm very close to finishing the last and it will likely end up being my runner-up GOTY if I do finish it, unless the final area or two completely ruins it (seems unlikely). But Wo Long was the game that I enjoyed the most. It doesn't out-Nioh Nioh, but it comes close. And it helped that it came out of nowhere for me, with zero hype. Lu Bu can fuck off, though. As usual. It certainly doesn't ruin it, but there's a slight chance the final boss will test your rage-quit levels to their limits... Haha! Well, I am at the final boss as you know. But I really enjoyed Arche Abbey in general, and even the bosses leading up to this one - tough as hell but I found a viable solution (the repeccing I mentioned in the other thread). So I think, even though I haven't quite finished it (I could just click on that option and finish, not that I'm going to), it's safe to say it's my GOTY. By some distance. Absolutely brilliant, and a total surprise for me. I didn't even notice the demo.

Oh Marvel Snap..sometimes I think of reinstalling you to see the performance on my new phone, as when I played it, performance got so poor that I had to shut down the app every third game or so. That's what helped me quit.
But now...it calls to me

My first thought after playing again was why did I ever quit playing this in the first place?

TOTK and Baldur's Gate for me, and I'd give it to the latter out of the two. Everything else was just background noise. Two of the most ambitious and impressive games I've played, and certainly the most ambitious games of this generation.
Normally have to spend some time thinking about this but not this year.

My first thought after playing again was why did I ever quit playing this in the first place? I quit when they messed around with the spotlights and did some major nerfing to the few cards I had. Before that change I felt a sense of progress but afterwards it felt like work and like it was trying to get me to buy tokens. Anyway, I felt I had a glimpse into how people get caught up in gambling apps playing that game. It's a shame because the actual game was enjoyable.

By virtue of being one of only two games from this year that I've actually played, I'll be plumping for 'HoloCure - Save the Fans', a free, cutesy Vampire Survivors type thing.

I didn’t really have a strong GOTY until the Giant Bomb game of the year discussions brought this one up more than once:
Winner: Hitman - Freelancer mode
I posted about it at the time in the Hitman thread- absolutely loved it and played nothing else for weeks. And that was as someone who bounced off the original game. Something about the risk/reward elements it borrowed from extraction type games really did it for me in a way the base game never did. And then I discovered I’d learned the levels so thoroughly that going back to the base game, and being able to save (!) made it an absolute cakewalk.
Runner up: Starfield

Freelancer is an absolutely fantastic addition to one of my desert island games. Should fire up another campaign tonight, I never did get round to beating it.

Honestly the reason I've not got round to it is that I've rung so much out of Hitman 1 & 2 (main missions, side missions, DLC, escalations, elusive targets etc) that I burnt out a little on the game.
It really is the best example of a desert island game though - the amount of content and replayability is genuinely staggering.

Isn't Hitman 3 automatically upgraded to WOA? Could be wrong because as you say, it's a bit of a minefield.

After being hugely disappointed by Starfield, I find the game which I am still playing and enjoy is, surprisingly, even to myself Diablo 4. It looks the absolute business, and has only improved over the two seasons. I will be playing it in 2024 I would imagine.
I suspect Phantom Liberty would have given it a run for its money if I had played it. Cyberpunk 2077 is up there in my all time greats.
