Also it was very surprising to hear Takehito frickin Koyasu (most famously known for Dio in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, among many other roles) voicing someone that (so far) seems like a side character... It was instantly recognizable, too, the dude said all of two (sober) lines and I was like "Wait..."

It’s a stacked cast in Japanese. It does feel like I’m being followed around by Kazuhiro Yamaji and Yasuyuki Kase of late though.
I’m really enjoying how much Ryoma’s voice actor goes for the accent as well, lots of fun to listen to.

Managed to get the boss lady night after much swearing.
Will admit though, I had to drop it to easy for Dojo Guy. He just never gave me a chance to do anything. Nice to have that option finally though, rather than having just ditch it after smashing my face repeatedly against it, like with Nioh.
Easy doesn’t seem to change too much either. Just seems to be a bit lighter on ki usage and damage received. Not sure if the parry window was slightly wider or not.
Bumped it back up to normal now as that works nicely for pretty much everything else.
Scored a sweet colourful full samurai outfit from a side quest. I look boss.

I appear to have "rizzed up" (as one does) the crazy cat lady... And created a special task force comprised of cats and dogs in the process (I literally sent a litter of cats to harass a cat-hater just now). Who says only Dragon's Dogma can have fun, eh?

Did everyone know there's a white flash on the red unblockable moves that tells you when to counter? Why the fuck am I only finding this out now?
Also way more important is that if you hold the stick down when you're sheathing your weapon it does various cool blood wipe animations.

I find the little sound effect on the second flash easier to pick out as well.
It's interesting that it's another warning, meaning that if you try to anticipate it you'll miss but if you do it on reaction you'll pretty much always hit it. It makes the fighting weirdly less stressful, at least at the point I am in the game.

I swore I would wait, but the urge was too strong, particularly after reading impressions here. I had to buy. So far it feels very much open world Nioh which I guess by default means its some of the best combat in an open world game. Only 3 hrs in or so but it feels very nice.

20 hours in now and my biggest problem, aside from being rubbish at timing aerial executions, is that you spend too much time not fighting. The fighting is amazing because, as I alluded to in the Stellar Blade thread, battles are so dynamic and just pressing buttons is lots of fun.

That irate retainer guy can get in the bin. What a bastard. There’s really limited windows to parry.
I’m about 20 hours in now and my biggest criticism is the usual open world tonnes of quests. I don’t pay attention to what they say now, and just wait for the next fight.

I'm completely hooked. I'm enjoying the combat every bit as much as Nioh. Maybe even more with all the different styles to use and fight against.
I'm pretty sick of openworld stuff in general but in this the missions are just an excuse to get into more fights. No one gets the simple pleasure of slicing a head off quite like Team Ninja and I'm always going to be there for it.

Those who bring split-second ranged attacks to sword fights are always at least slightly cunts Although at least this one you have your inventory for, unlike certain dojo fights I could mention...

I'm 32 hours in it seems and just did a Dojo mission (apart from the introductory one) for the first time...and unlocked Dragonfly Strike (L1 + x) for my Odachi. Is that how you unlock them, then - through the Dojo? (I wasn't using an Odachi, but Gonzo, my opponent, was). I'd assumed it was just general use that levelled them. I'm none the wiser about that particular mechanic to be honest.
I agree with everyone that combat is the best part but unlike you guys I'm enjoying hoovering everything up - the key difference from, say, recent ACs is that the areas are small and quick to get around: it takes so little to get stuff done and the rewards are worth it.
At this point every area I have access to is now 100% done so I've been catching up on missions today. So far: faked deaths through blowfish poison and clearing out corrupt officials in Chinatown.
Now if I could only get some romance in my life I'd be a happy Ronin.

Okay, just looking a bit more closely in the menus it seems to suggest that progress depends on bond level with certain characters and / or story progression? Not totally sure though.

If you go into the styles section of the menu, it should tell you what skills you unlock and how you level up each style.

FlexibleFeline from what I've seen so far, styles unlock either through story or killing specific people, level up (novice, intermediate etc) from bonding with people, which upgrades their arts and maybe opens the R1+O slot, and you unlock their R1+X art by doing the dojo fights and getting at least enough points for the first reward (it shows which fights reward arts). It's the weapon proficiencies that increase with weapon use (and even then I've been getting proficiency with weapons I'm not using, maybe the skill tree's skill that increases how much you gain affects them too??), and they give their own passive bonuses

uiruki Cheers, it seems there are various requirements including all the ones I previously mentioned i.e. for some it's about weapon proficiency (i.e. keep using it), for others bond levels and others just indicate story progression.

And on to Edo. Absolutely loving this game. The story and cast of characters are pretty damn good.

If you're only after new skills (which are at the novice rank, at least so far) they're not too bad for the most part... Mastering them, though? Yeah, no The only one I was able to get master rank on for the trophy was Chandler* just now, and that's after practicing him a good bit, using an advantageous and quick style (Mumyo-Ryu on Dual Swords with R1+🔲) and him giving me a good attack pattern (his spinny move I find really easy to fully deflect, he didn't shoot me much and his red attacks I just dodged instead of risking taking damage) * Matthew Perry

Having completed a mission I'm curious, is there a way to replay it? I'd be curious to jump back in and see about helping someone out via co op but I haven't seen anything in the menus and even going back to the location shows up nothing.

Playing more and got to fight one fugitive, The Temple Crasher, had a greatsword. Fuck me he was brutal. Took more times than I like to admit.
This game is like the equivalent of comfort food to me. Plays great, exploring vast areas, checking things off a list that aren't bloated. Doesn't do anything revolutionary but doesn't need too. Having Nioh esque combat and difficulty makes it have one of the best combat systems in an open world game.

Yeah, I'm feeling it's a good dip in and out game. Get my fill of a few missions. In no rush to 'complete' it.

Its the first game on ages that I'm constantly itching to get back on when I'm not playing. Team Ninjas best game for me, I absolutely love it.

It's difficult to say if it's better than the Niohs for me, because aside from the combat it (obviously) scratches a rather different itch... But I'm certainly having a lot of trouble pulling myself away from it Edo just opened up now so I'm having a blast tearing across the country again after a period of more focused story progression (it's "familiar" territory, too, since Fate Samurai Remnant -whose playthrough I've temporarily parked- is set in the same region a couple centuries earlier, so I'm having fun recognizing the areas) It's also great fun to try out all the combat styles! The Yagyu Shinkage-Ryu style on katana is standing out right now because its R1+Δ is essentially a Counterspark alternative with more lenient timing (as long as you know which attacks it punishes most effectively)

The fuck is William('s descendant? I guess?) doing in this game just chilling in a random cave and how did I manage to win while so underleveled the HUD was showing them as red??? See, this is exactly what I was talking about in the DD thread re: bosses, that was great! First boss so far to push me to use buff items alongside healing (although I didn't use Ki Blaze, I didn't even have it charged), tough but not overly punishing even with my low level and a cool as heck fight overall!

Looks like I'll be getting on this as soon as DD2 is done. Have to say I've watched a bit more footage of late (not too much, don't want to spoil it), and it's looking better all the time.

Well… I’m at an insanely hard boss fight. There’s two of them in the snow. And it’s impossible.
