Ulythium I don't dislike the gameplay but I'm not really paying attention to the story and I've not been back to it at all lately. In fairness, I haven't been playing anything else either.

rftp That's fair. I ended up treating the story as 100% optional, as none of the characters clicked with me at all (and I disliked some of the voice actors so much, it actively put me off listening to their dialogue). It didn't help that I'd made my Blade Twin look like a melted troll doll, so every time he showed up in a cutscene, I couldn't take it seriously for love nor money.

I am liking the story well enough, better than Nioh or Wo Long at least, but yeh its nothing too special. I think thats ok tho, they dont really place too much into it themselves. I mean there was a streamer I follow who was playing the game at the start, he made both his Blade Twins as Black characters. But the game doesn't account for this in the pre made cutscene showing when their village was attacked as kids, so you have an instance where it shows both characters as Japanese boys, which then hard cuts to Black men as the same people.

I actually feel as though Team Ninja placed a lot more emphasis on story this time around, but did so without bothering to hire any actual writers.
The discrepancy between character creation and the flashback sequences was quite amusing.

Yeah, I know what you mean about some of the characters. Ryoma, for example... says really serious stuff, but the tone of voice is like he's taking the piss, which is jarring. Some of it's really good - Usugumo for example, it makes the other stuff even worse if that makes sense.
The combat IS fun, though. Are Nioh and WuLong of that nature? I assumed they were more... "git gud".

Both Nioh games are *much* harder than Ronin, and don't have selectable difficulty levels; they also have *far* deeper combat systems (especially Nioh 2, which I found borderline overwhelming in terms of the number of systems in play!).
The above is also true of Wo Long, but to a lesser extent - it's still a hard game, but not quite as punishing as the Niohs, while combat is a bit more stripped-down and arcadey.
All three are very good indeed, in my view.
Lastly, Stranger of Paradise has gameplay that's every bit as brilliant as its narrative is batshit crazy.

Thanks. They both sound like they'd be too much for me, though 😁

Yeah Wo Long is easier than the Niohs but they’re all technically soulslikes so they are difficult by nature.
As for stories… I don’t generally pay attention. I don’t even know what’s going on in this so far. Or care.

I do hope you new players are playing with the Japanese voiceover on, and not copying the mistake of Ulythium...

The voice actor of the guy who carried the shamisen around drove me entirely up the wall.

Oh gosh. Japanese with subtitles is surely the only way to do it.
