Yep, soon as you get new stances I feel it opens up the possibilities. Soon you'll be going for the mid air countersparks just to look cool. It's definitely Niohs combat, but as things opened up it just feels more like an open world Ninja Gaiden too.
I think the open world is just right size too, even the activities are basic and routine but they're fun little checkmarks to give a bit of diversity to gameplay and there's not too many to bog it down. Hunting the fugitives is fun too. I can absolutely see why people would give it a decent score but not amazing and yet...I really think it's one of my games of the year, personally it's about a 9.
The stats on these weapons and armor you get though. 0.1% loot increase, I mean seriously. I know these mattered a lot more in end game Nioh so maybe it's the same, but I would be much happier getting one variant of a sword with decent stats than multiple worse ones.

Yeah I’m in love it now. Almost abandoned it, I’m not sure the open world does it any favours but it’s actually very fun just fast travelling around looking for fights.

Still having fun with this, still on chapter 1. I seem to be spending most of my time cuddling cats, petting dogs or taking photo's. I can not attest to the accuracy of this portrayal of a Ronin's life but it is pretty relaxing. LOL

Yeah me too, I’m in the second location. It’s all very chill! After a terrible first impression I’m now really enjoying it. The combat is very satisfying.

Completed Rise of the Ronin earlier today... Time: 38 hours Skill: Story Trophies: 23/51 (will likely get a few more post completion.
Really enjoyed my time with the game and in the world. If I was being critical I would say the game is pretty average in almost all departments and there are certainly better open world/action "rpg's" out there. But it does have a charm and the combat is rather excellent. The story was good enough and you do have two different paths to choose (you have the ability later in the game to go back and choose the other path) during a lot of the major story points. The world is large, thankfully you have a steed, who can shift a bit! The glider did seem a bit redundant, you didn't glide long enough on a lot of occasions, for it to be a practical mode of transport but that may be down to me not taking enough photos..for the inventor, (you meet him early in the game) to reward me with new/upgraded tech.
If you like dressing up you are catered for to a huge degree, likewise weapons. I like that the game has transmog, even if you get rid of an item you can keep the look and style of it. You can also tart up your house, to a very limited degree, displaying armour, pictures, oniments, all giving slight stat increases or perks for various things.
One of the best features for me was that with almost all boses you can invite up to two human players (these can be friends or randoms) to aid you, this came in so handy. You can even start with a.i. partners and they will be replaced seamlessly when human players want to join, likewise you can enter a match to help someone, once the boss has been defeated the other two players are removed from game instantly, you can't even say cheers!
Somethings that could have been better or improved. Graphics, they are not great, enemy variation, snagging on furniture now and again, too many menus and sub menus, pop ups appearing with information, even after 30+ hours these would come up, telling me things I had been already been doing for ages. I'm not sure I totally understood the fighting stances and perks per style, this probably didn't matter as I was playing on an easier skill setting.
It was somewhat jarring coming from the sublime GoT directly to this (on ps5 at least) but I have totally had my monies worth and I am glad I went for it, even with reading/watching a fair amount of dislike for the game for many reasons. I certainly will spend a bit more time in the world before selling/trading 7/10

I think the combination of the horse and glider makes it so easy to get around the world that other games should take inspiration from. Being able to glide, call the horse mid air, drop down and guarantee to be on the horse and keep moving is not only a cool visual but just saved a few button presses and seconds going from A to B that it all adds up. Plus you can use the horse to auto run to a designated point on the map and it'll auto pickup any resources along the way. Plus the world is such that you're never too far away from anything interesting.

This has finally come down in price - £44.99 at Argos, The Game Collection,* and Smyths Toys - so I've ordered a copy, which I'm hoping will arrive before the long weekend.
Looking forward to giving it a shot.

Any tips regarding the pro- and anti-Shogunate choices, chaps? I've just reached the first branching mission, and I can either assassinate some dude or... well, not.

Also, did anyone bother with the romance options in this game?
I'm looking to do some Rise of the Bonin', if you catch my drift.

Don't worry too much about them They do change the story, but you eventually get an item that lets you go back and play the other branch, as well as keep whichever outcome you prefer for the future. You can do everything without NG+ this way. Also, did anyone bother with the romance options in this game? I'm looking to do some Rise of the Bonin', if you catch my drift. I romanced the cat lady, Usugumo Dayu. She was sweet when you read between the lines of her poem and she was pretty much the only one not involved in conflicts in any way. I figured my protagonist would like someone they can really unwind with, away from the chaos of... basically everywhere else Also, she actually existed irl, but the only things known about her besides her profession are the location of her gravestone and her rumoured love for cats. Nothing historically impactful in any way. Maybe we'll get to be love interests in a video game 100 years from now if those are the only criteria, who knows

Dayu fell in love with my character before I even knew that was a game mechanic.

So you're saying there's a chance I'll get laid again at some point, even if it's a century from now?

The Ghost of Yotei reveal has got me all hankering for Fuedal Japanese combat. I've reinstalled GoT to do the expansion but then I remembered I had this! Haven't really played it yet so took a break from slaughtering hordes of undead in LA last night to mess about in it for an hour or so.
I really like it. Because I've played Nioh 1&2 to death and recently come off Wo Long, it just feels like a natural sibling to those games. Graphically it looks worse than other games but better than the three mentioned above. It's just their engine is dated as fuck. Yet the combat is glorious.
So, yeah, I like it. I have a big straw hat already and I've cuddled two cats.

I have "waxed lyrical" multiple times over this game, while it is not perfect I enjoyed every minute of my tens of hours and still drop in from time to time to take down a bandit or two and mop up some challenge or another. As for GoY I can't wait. I would have loved to have spent more time with Jin mind you. Play the dlc it is great.

Yeah it really does remind me that gameplay > graphics
Don't know how far I'll get as I'm still loving Dead Island 2 and there's the small matter if Silent Hill 2 in a couple of weeks. I can see myself dipping in and out long term though and certainly right now it's fantastic.

Glad you're enjoying Ronin, Wunts! It was a solid 7/10 experience for me, and I really did have fun despite its flaws.
If Team Ninja get to make a sequel, and if they can make the same kind of leap forwards as they did between Nioh and Nioh 2, Ronin 2: Rise Ronin-er could be something pretty special.
And yeah, Iki Island is well worth playing as well, especially with Yotei now officially announced. (I'm hoping the new protagonist will be less of a wet blanket than Jin... but that's another post for another thread.)

Yeah it's probably the best 7/10 game of the year for me too.
Starfield might steal that yet but I'm not far enough in to give a judgement, seems to be getting more interesting as I go and it could slip up to an 8.

I do like a solid 7/10 game. Those tend to be the best kind. Kind of want to just go home and keep playing it to be honest.

It's incredibly morish. Definitely an elite 7/10 game. Excellent fashion options.

I also haven't been back to this in nearly a month, I suspect I might be done with it.

I've been doing the doctor's side missions. I've cleared a lot of the map in the 2nd area, but I have no idea where the story is, really.

rftp Ah, okay. And you're not feeling it? That's a shame (albeit understandable - the core gameplay loop doesn't change much from the first hour to the last).
