Good job Snow Patrol weren’t booked as an opening act! Light up, Light up… I think I've figured out that user Hicksy is a bot that has been programmed with the consciousness of Tim Vine.
Don't even accuse me cause I'll go on the run But I suppose it'd be easy where to find me Cause I'll be at the bottom having fun

I can only assume no French singers wanted to sing that shite so they had to get a Yank.

Notttttt sureeee about this opening ceremony yet. It feels very disjointed?
Also the dancers in those pink outfits were really quite shit if you paid attention :x
Strange to me they are front loading the countries coming out too. Hopefully they blow up half of the Seine with fireworks and shit once they've got through them all.

It seems more made for TV, in that everyone on the bank will also need a screen to see the whole thing due to how spaced out it is. Good on them for trying something different, though.

The Assassin's Creed parkour stuff is watchable, the rest? Hmm.

Also really makes me appreciate how impactful lighting effects are in stadiums. All these shots of dancers in flat, diffuse, cloudy light isn't exactly spectacular.

Taking it out of a stadium environment really does seem to have fucked it up.

I went to the London 2012 opening ceremony and it was utterly fucking incredible. Unforgettable.
The atmosphere in the stadium was like nothing I've experienced. The dancers, actors and athletes must have absolutely thrived off that. Feels a lot less likely when you're dancing on a plinth next to some filthy water -_-

I mean tbf how many actually remember an opening ceremony? Also, the Beijing 2008 opening ceremony was insane. I think that was a real turning point for these things being blockbuster events.

The only ones you remember are LA ‘84 for the jet pack and London, because somehow we managed to not be rubbish.

Do feel sympathetic to the organisers unfortunately coinciding this ceremony with the worst fucking summer weather in forever.

Yeah, London was unforgettable. I'd say Beijing was, as well, but for shere mesmerising spectacle of an authoritarian mindset, than anything else.
I can barely remember a thing about Rio. But Tokyo had a cool videogame medly, including Nier and Kingdom Hearts, when the althetes were arriving.

Sydney 2000 was pretty good, for a few hours it was like Australia acknowledged its past but I'm not sure that lasted more than the Olympics themselves though.
