Yeah making fun of a celeb is one thing as they have courted a fair amount of the attention they're seeking, but if a relative nobody is saying can you guys stop it maybe just stop. It wasn't *that* hilarious anyway.

I expect it isn't the making fun of comments that are the problem, but the "she cheated", "how dare she make the noble tradition of breaking dancing a laughing stock", etc.
I saw a YouTube clip of some Australian news programme defending her and none of the comments underneath were jokey. They weren't overly abusive, but they were all getting very pissed off over some mildly amusing thing that doesn't warrant much more than a few seconds of attention.

Depends how you view the event. Breakdancing is more than 50 years old and for some people it's the most important thing in their life. Their career and their passion. I don't see a big difference between this and rhythmic gymnastics or ice skating.
People took the piss out of beach volleyball and BMX when first introduced now they're fantastic Olympic events.

I thought it was shite and a bit embarassing, especially seeing she is 36 years old. Just looked stupid. I reckon there are 10 year olds that could have done a much more competent job. There are even rumours that she was only in it because of connections, but believe that is unproven. I've not seen the hate, but then I don't read twitter, and have only seen memes which are lighthearted and mildly funny.
But also agree that it was stupid to even be in the olympics, even if actual good breakdances is actually entertaining to watch.
Also agree with whoever said it was ridiculous Lebron, etc were involved. I don't believe that it should be amatuer hour rubbish like Raygun, but don't need the best players from NBA/Prem/etc involved. Lebron looked like he was barely even trying half the time, as if he was too good for it. The whole US team were playing in 2nd gear and would have been in big trouble if Steph Curry wasn't carrying.

The Olympics have been a hugely commercialised professional event for 40 odd years. The amateur ideals are long gone irrespective of whether that's a good thing.
Personally I prefer watching the best of the best and that typically requires people to dedicate their lives to their sport and be funded to enable that.
The only thing that mildly annoys me are Olympic sports where the Olympics is patently not the biggest event in that sport. It's only special because it matters most.
I'd bin off football, golf and tennis in their current forms for that reason. Basketball is one I'd actually keep based on same criteria.

Who actually wants golf in the Olympics?
Aside from the IOC.

Yeah, there are very few sports I actually enjoy watching, but when I do I want to see them performed at the highest level, not by some part timers. Unless you can attain the highest level as a part timer, like some of the shitty events for dorks.

Basketball is a bit of an odd one because I reckon football would be equally competitive whether it was full adult professionals or just junior sides but basketball would probably become less competitive if you formally set a rule that it couldn’t be full time professionals. The US could just send a load of future first draft picks from college and given how strong college sports are they’d wipe the floor with “amateurs” from the rest of the world.

Yeah, I said the same thing to the Mrs. Every event outside the OG track ones will have been ripped on by someone when it was introduced. ‘Swimming? SWIMMING?!?’. And I’d rather see it over a load of events. I don’t think the pro-sports like tennis, golf or football should be there anyway and id extend that to rowing, cycling, boating and all the horse shit. Anything you need upper-middle class money to get into.

Cycling isn't that privileged is it? I thought Wiggins grew up in a council house in Kilburn.
With you on the horses though. Any event where you can just straight up buy a major equipment advantage shouldn't be in the Olympics imo.

on privilege, the grim stat is that a third of all Team GB were privately educated, up from a quarter in Rio.
Turns out the legacy of London 2012 was further exclusion of the bottom 92% from elite level sport

Aside from the gear required, I can’t imagine there’s many towns with a velodrome knocking about. So you’d either need to be local or have a parent in a position to regularly cart you around the country to do your biking.

And that mongolian(?) one where they kick that giant shuttlecock around.
Wrt cycling, obviously if it’s got two wheels you can get going but I saw someone on the telly going on about Olympic level bikes starting at 50k and I think japans was north of 100k.

I think basketball is like the third highest participation sport in the country but because it’s only played by poor inner city kids it gets a pittance of funding compared to the posh pursuits.

I don't mind basketball in the Olympics because as far as I'm aware - and I could be spectacularly wrong here - there aren't any other international competitions for the sport, country Vs country. Whereas obviously there are for football, rugby, etc. So the latter really don't need to be in the Olympics as they're already well catered for.

So you’d either need to be local or have a parent in a position to regularly cart you around the country to do your biking. In the UK there’s plenty, 6 indoor Olympic standard velodromes and dozens of outdoor ones. Most track cyclists are plucked from the junior road bike scene though, so you don’t strictly need to grow up near one. If you are lucky enough to have one on your doorstep then it’s very accessible for kids to get into, you don’t even need to buy a track bike as you just hire one on the day. In contrast, the USA has just 1 indoor Olympic standard velodrome in the whole country

They are having T20 cricket in LA. Just to be a hypocrite I'm quite looking forward to that.

We were just shit at it.

Again though that's already a world cup for T20 so it'd be so much better to make Olympic cricket is own thing. Personally I'd favour an old school non time limited test series tournament. Would have to start it at least year prior to the opening ceremony but that's fine.
