Weekend EG is reporting on the 400 mil claim, well when I mean reporting just copying verbatim without even understanding if the figure is true and who's saying it. Classic Weekend EG.

When you consider GOW was £200m budget or Ghost of Tsushima was £65m in budget, the 400 figure seems exceptionally ludicrous given what the final product is. So no, still not believing that figure.

Yeah I pretty much expected EG to parrot it without bothering to investigate at all. Gutter website these days.

I mean, the article literally says "the reporter couldn't corroborate it", and then links to several sources that dispute the $400m figure.
I know we have problems with EG, but if you actually read beyond the first paragraph or so, I don't feel like they've done an especially bad job of reporting this. It would be nice if they could chase everything down like the New York Times, but that takes time and money.

A very competently made yet average game isn't suddenly going to be an an amazing game just because it's F2P. I don't think Sony have realised that yet.

Fuck man, feel sorry for those that have lost jobs, this industry is a trainwreck right now.

I mean, it fucking sucks for all those people but for the life of me I was struggling to see how even going F2P would have made a difference. The psychological damage was already done. That GaaS legacy that Jim Ryan pushed for really is providing so much fruit, isn't it?

So within 18 months Sony bought them, shut down their game, and closed them down?
I'm sure some people made a few quid from the purchase but it's a mess all round.

/remembers about that Secret Level episode...
But yeah. One failed game and your entire studio is closed down. The absolute insanity of it.

It felt inevitable given the current practices without the games industry. I’m betting the execs who’ve been making the decisions along the way somehow fail upwards from this too.

On a side note, for some reason Phil Harrison keeps getting work at high level roles, WTF? The guy is idiot

I am convinced someone was embezlling money or something via this. It just can't have cost 200 million, even at US Cali dev salaries. Especially given they weren't at full staffing for the majority of that time.

Sounds like ProbablyMonsters made money out of it. Harold Ryan ex Bungie. Can't really blame him though, as he raised $200 mil to fund the game, then Sony came in.

Actually a testament to the PS brand name and everyone else at the company that it's done so well while he was in charge.

It’s literally the biggest flop in entertainment ever. No one should be losing money except for the top line.
