I feel like this has been in development for ages. Mainly because I remember listening to Tom Francis talk about its development for ages on Crate & Crowbar, and he hasn't been on that for a couple of years.

I was confused when I received a mailing from them saying it was out. I unsubscribed instantly out of habit. I couldn't remember signing up for emails regarding that title, but "creator of Gunpoint" must've jogged my memory a bit. A quick Google search later confirmed I must've subscribed to their mailing list during the Gunpoint hoopla so many years ago. Remembering how impressed I was with that game and the story of how its creator decided to start making games, I downloaded the free demo of TBW on Steam.
Well, this is certainly a fresh take on the XCOM genre, I thought after a few minutes of playing the game. Time to do other things, though, so I exited after doing the first 2 intro levels. But I kept thinking about the game and how to do things better and so I returned to it quickly thereafter. Fast forward to completing the demo and I am still thinking about the game and how to do things better.
I will definitely be buying this sooner rather than later.

Had about an hour with it, very entertaining so far. Doesn't have all the depth of XCOM but can see many beard stroking hours in the foreseeable.
Runs on steam deck fine, controls are a little fiddly but not a dealbreaker.

I haven't been following its development recently, but Tom Francis was a massive fan of Into the Breach, so I'd expect this to have a lot of the predictive/puzzle elements of that, probably mixed with some elements of Slay the Spire as he loved that too, oh, and of course some defenestration.

Although it is getting a lot of comparisons to X-Com, I do suspect it will be more Into the Breach and closer to a puzzle game. X-com really needs an element of randomness and a higher strategy layer, which I understand this game doesn't have.
I'll definitely be picking this up. Not really played Tom Francis's games (think I dabbled with Gunpoint), but love his story of starting game development from scratch and learning as he went along.

Having played the first hour or so, can confirm that it is much closer to Into the Breach than XCOM. It has some XCOMey things like overwatch, but so far it's been more about positioning enemies and manipulating turn orders and such.
(which is 100% fine with me, I love Into the Breach)
It is a little bit basic at the moment, though. I hope it opens up a little.

The humour is... alright. It's very Pratchett. Which isn't a bad thing, but (so far) it's not quite the laugh-a-minute experience that previews led me to expect.

I read that they purposely didn't want the randomness so you didn't suddenly lose your favourite character...

I know Tom was a big fan of XCOM, but he also really liked that Into the Breach didn't have any randomness, and showed you exactly what was going to happen before you did an action, and what the enemies were going to do, so it was entirely predictable. (and yet also very easy to screw up, if you're me).

Hmmm I was interested but now I know it's more on the puzzle side I'm distinctly less interested. I think I just don't like board game stuff in video games.

My hope is that they release some kind of alternate game mode with randomised maps. There's definitely an appeal to having everything be handcrafted, but that will only last for one playthrough. I really want to have all these abilities work together in an Into the Breach-style campaign.

Yeah even if the XCOM campaign mechanisms are kinda thin in places or throws up missions where all your good team are injured or your short on heavy weapons but you come up against a mech. The random element is good for throwing up challenges.

But of a fiddly mess on the SteamDeck but basically playable. Any game that promotes hoying people through windows gets my dime and my time. Also picked up Shadow Tactics: Blade of the Shogun for £4 on a Steam Weekend Deal. Sorta wish I’d bought it before the company shut down.

Shadow Tactics is great. Desperados 3 is even better though, so definitely get that if you enjoy ST.
Their most recent pirate one is pretty good too, but think it tries to be a little more free in player choice, which means the levels are a bit more loose in their design.
