Thought we might as well have a thread for all things Warcraft. Anyway, today they released remasters of Warcraft 1 & 2 over at battle.net. Warcraft 1 for €10, WC2 for €15, and a collection that also contains WC3 Reforged for €40. The latter also just received its 2.0 update but I don't know what that's about since I haven't played it yet. I bit and can't wait to play WC1 with updated controls, used to love that game as a kid, I'm not sure but it may well have been the first RTS I'd played even before Dune 2.

I was always a C&C player (and those remasters are really well done)
WarCraft 3 always makes me think of the early days of 3D and feels like when the RTS genre peaked. It spawning DotA probably had something to do with that. Did they ever fix Reforged? Remember is getting a really bad reception

Hah.
I got w1 and w2 on gog for nostalgic reasons.
Worked flawlessly. The UI was a little annoying though.

Played a round of WC1, among other things you get box-dragging, right-click commands, and options to increase the game speed and to decrease UI size which also zooms out. Nice.

I was always a C&C player (and those remasters are really well done) Would love it if the remaining good C&C games were given the same treatment, but since its been a while in radio silence I'm not holding my breath.

I loved WC2 back in the day. Might have been the first RTS I played. I'm not sure any other RTS ever grabbed me in the same way.
The uprezzed graphics for 1 and 2 look nice, in that WC2 looks like I remember WC2 looking, rather than looking like a bunch of pixels.
Given WC2 and Homeworld might be the only RTS I ever finished, and WC2 may have been mainly down to it being the first one, and also the only game I had to play that year, I'm not sure I'd go back to it though. Definitely not for $15.

"Personally? I think the remasters look like dogwater. I’d say they reminded me of a Newgrounds flash game but I’m positive I’ve played several that were much nicer. It looks a dentist waiting room pop-up book of itself run through several washing machine cycles then brightened up with an MS paint tool meant to emulate crayons made of the sun. It looks like it's going to try and offer me a discount on an energy bundle so I can run my farms for another hour, but I only if I send an invite to my aunt. If I’m blinded by nostalgia, then I choose to remain blind forever. Actually, I’ll have ten percent more blindness please. The colours are still too much. Still, if nothing else, they are now a thing that exists and that Blizzard is selling, so there’s that. Enjoy, I guess."

Lol. I could guess that would be Nic without even clicking on it.
Personally I think they look ok. WC2 was the game I played, and they look like cleaner versions of the original cartoony graphics. They look like I remember it looking... but it turns out it didn't look like that.

About a decade ago, I tried to reactivate my dormant World Of Warcraft account, only to discover it had been hacked and all of a sudden it turned into a whole thing with fraudulent activity on my bank account.
Never again would I ride the Mechano-Hog it took me so long to build.

I'm rather surprised to find battle.net is still a thing. I assumed it disappeared with things like Gamespy. I wonder if I have an account?

I have to agree the new graphics are pretty bad, even a downgrade from the original, and that's shameful for a filthy rich company like Actibliz. But I play with the original graphics anyway (which you can anytime by pressing F5) and the UI/QOL improvements are really great, they're really all I wanted, which makes it worth it for me. I always wanted to revisit WC1 but it hadn't aged well, and the remaster finally turns it into something that is actually pretty well playable. Next mission is one of those in the caves, I still have memories of how I lined up archers in some ruins to fend off some ogres or whatever without getting my units hurt. Looking forward to it!
I thought this review from a WC2 enthusiast was pretty good:
