So I decided to have a crack at AC: Black Flag. I’ve owned it for years, but only played the tutorial.
My experience of AC games is pretty minimal. I played a bit of 2 and didn’t really get on with it. I have Odyssey and have played an hour or two on my Steam Deck.
I’m wondering if I’m playing it right. Actual stealth seems to be more or less impossible. If I parkour across the roofs, I get spotted right away. I can get stealth kills by hiding in tall grass and similar, but every assassin mission seems to end up as a free-for-all. Not only can’t I get stealth kills, I generally can’t see how on earth I could.
I also think naval combat is going to be stupidly hard, but I’ve only played the first of those missions where you have to escape from the fleet.

yonks since i played it but recollection is that yeah, land based bits are very meh but life on the open waves is where it's at
has a few more wrinkles than odyssey naval combat (chain shot & the like) but very similar

Playing it myself right now.
Stealth is stupid. I literally just slaughter everyone. Sometimes escape if I don't actually need to kill everyone to progress the game. Those assasin mission. Just run to target stab him in the chest run away.
You are a pirate first pretend assasin second.
Naval combat was super hard at first but few upgrades to ship, mortar and realising that those tiny cannons which snipe barrels of gun powder on ship are super op. At least at first.
It really became fun.

The game is garbage, despite a reputation for being 'one of the good ones'.
Black Flag is worse offline just because the tail wants to wag the dog and Ubisoft wanted you in their pointless online ecosystem, offline you eventually run out of metal for crafting upgrades and there is no way to get it without grinding on a scale that would put the most exploitative whale chaser mobile games to shame... Or you can go online and just get handed the materals that have intentionally been made scarce.
There is barely any skill component to large parts of the game, so when you are advised to upgrade your ship just to progress in story missions you're in for an incredibly bad time if you can't or don't want to do this.
For this and the reasons in the posts above, physical copies of Black Flag are best utilised as coasters or bird scarers.

I really enjoyed Black Flag. The only ones I’ve ever really enjoyed are the first two, that one, and the Egypt one (that’s the sleeper IMO, it’s so deliciously creepy). I believe the Greek one is supposed to be good, but I bounced off it because I’d just spent hours in Egypt.
Although I think the Egypt one (sorry forgot the name!) is the underrated one I think Flag is the best by far. And yeah, I tended to find that once the assassination was done it then became a ‘fight your way to escape game’ but I don’t think that’s atypical for the series at all.
Love the concepts of Creed but because it’s spread out amongst so many games and systems I think following the overarching plot is pretty much a fool’s errand, so it always ends up not making any sense once the illuminati and ancient origin alien gods shit shows up.

I think some of the Ubisoft nonsense is why I’ve tended to bounce off this series a lot. One thing that massively annoys me is that the launcher makes me enter my password every damn time I want to play the game.

I always find the older AC games a bit weird to play without a crouch button these days. As a serial skulker it annoys me that I can only creep around when the game says I can, i.e some strategically placed patch of grass.

If you want to unlock everything grinding is necessary in this game from what I read. Metal from Hunter ships, gold from everything else. But also I read that you absolutely do not need to beat the game. Can finish it by just doing the bare minimum. Picked a fight with a high level ship today. I thought I could take it lol. Got owned big time. So picking on smaller ships for now which I do enjoy. But mostly doing main mission. Not bothered about clearing map. Except shanties. Those are a must.

I beat the game twice didn't have to do this grinding that's been bandied around. The only thing I did go out of my way for was to unlock the locked high level costume on Libertalia, that's it.

I looted every chest on the map, cleared all available warehouses. No more metal, upgrades take hundreds of metal and raiding a ship gets you two or three maybe a little more if the gods smile on you.
Meanwhile, every time I try and progress a story mission, the only thing left to do, I'm constantly warned that I'm not upgraded enough. That's how it is if you play offline, note I just can't stand all the faff and forced updates so I never have consoles hooked up to the internet.
I don't even like the naval combat, once you've completed a few battles it's the same dull routine every time, sail around in circles firing your cannons etc. and waiting out the cool downs. If you aren't upgraded enough the enemy whittle your health down faster than you whittle down theirs so you either lose or retreat.

And you can check what they have before engaging using the periscope. So regular ships can be hunted for metal with ease. I think you missed an important part of the game.

Is that a ship or gear upgrade or something that unlocks after a certain point? Either way, I don't have it. I just couldn't face killing animals like whales and big cats to harvest materials for the gear upgrades. Last thing I got was the diving bell so I could experience the sheer joy of the underwater swimming sections.

My insight is that I honest to God don't remember any online content in Black Flag/before Origins in general, and from what I remember I 100%ed Black Flag (with maybe the exception of some optional Synchronization Objectives), so...

They have always metal. And I'm in North part of the map. South map has stronger enemies but also higher content loot. I don't have diving Bell yet as i just got to the forced stealthy mission in assasin village. So annoying. Yeah. Killing exotic animals is not that fun imo.

I have to say one thing at this point - the water modelling in this game is absolutely incredible. The waves, the movement, the foaming, the translucency of the shallows - it is a work of genius. By far the best I’ve ever seen in a game, and this came out 10 years ago.
