I still need a bloody drummer. What sort of stuff do you play, Wunty, and whereabouts are you based?

Ah! I don’t mind some travelling, but Scotland is a bit of a trek!

It's a bit far up, yes.

What's the best way to get an idea of guitar values these days? Getting rid of most of mine now, I've tried looking on sold listings on eBay but I can't really find any that are exactly the same.

Not sure tbh. I would have thought ring round some music shops for some advice, making sure you have the detailed spec to hand?

That's a good shout, thanks - I think tbh most of them are nothing special but I do have an 80's MIA Strat which I really have no clue what I should be asking for.

Any decent shop would I'm sure be happy to advise, or failing that if you know of anyone who perhaps specialises in freelance guitar repair work etc, they might know?
Failing that, ask yourself what you are willing to let them go for and list them at that. You'll soon know if they're too high as no-one will bite. Looking at selling some of mine in the past and I've ended up keeping half of them as I wasn't prepared to drop the price low enough. I'd rather keep than sell for pittance.

I'd have thought a MIA 80's strat would be worth something though.
But yeah, I sold 2 basses in the past, and the money was just not worth it. However, they weren't 80's MIA strats!
Trouble is, places like reverb have 80's strat price guide but they say anything from 500 to 1100.
Maybe using the serial numbers from the guitars and working it out from that somehow?

Thanks wunty, will try giving Manson's a ring as that's the closest decent shop to me I think. We've just moved house and as I really only play bass these days most of the guitars have to go (beyond one or two I can't bear to lose!).
Quaddy I did try that with the serial number on one of those decoder sites - apparently mine was made at the Fullerton/Corona plant between 84 and 88 but trying to find one even vaguely similar sold on eBay is a nightmare, and as you say the range is so wide I've got no clue what to ask.

Hm, it's tricky isn't it. Ebay is a total lottery, the shops will mark them down. I suppose what you need to somehow do is get it noticed by people seriously wanting those types of guitars that know what they're looking for.
I suppose the shop guideline price is a good a start as any and then maybe chuck a few hundred quid on top and put them on reverb or something similar?

Is it a USA standard? Is it in good condition? If so you’ll be looking at around £1k - £1.5k selling privately I think. Also if it’s a very early 80s one maybe more as they had a completely different headstock shape

In fact the only 80s standard strat that was not really popular is the one with only two knobs. But they were only in production for about a year so have probably gone up in price.

Thanks clem - it is a USA standard (based on the manual that is in the hardcase with it) and it's in relatively good condition except there is quite a bit of rust/pitting on the metal pieces, mostly on the pickguard screws and pickup magnets. It's got 3 pots and the standard Strat headstock I think.
It needs a good clean and set up as it's just been sat in its case for years but definitely happy with somewhere around the 1100 mark. I've emailed the shop now to see what they reckon and will likely stick a bit on top before advertising.
Cheers all for the help.

Just out of interest, what basses do you have/play?

Just out of interest, what basses do you have/play? I have an Ibanez SR500BM and a Pedulla Rapture RB4, and run those through a Genz Benz Shuttle and a Markbass cab. You? I haven't really played properly for a very long time but am starting to try and get back into it again now.

Nice ibanez, and blimey, that Pedulla Rapture RB4 looks bloody nice!
I've got a couple of fender precisions (Vintera MIM, and MIA ultra), and a few fender jazzes (MIM vintera, performer MIA and the MIA ultra). I have a "Gear-4-music type quality" double bass with a basic pickup too, that's fun to play about with. All mine go through a markbass amp too, the fairly dinky combo 121p.
Sounds like you're getting back into then - are you jamming with other people or just picking it up again on your own?

Thanks! To be honest the Pedulla is wasted on me as I'm a mediocre player at the best of times ha. It is lovely though.
Sounds a nice collection you've got, I do like a Fender Jazz, love the look of them too.
Definitely just pissing about by myself at the moment, it's probably been at least 8 years since I did any sort of jamming and haven't even touched a bass for probably 5 years, so going slowly and seeing what my fingers remember! Would be nice to get out and play again some time though, one of my friends is a brilliant drummer (and has actually gone back to uni to do music production) so would be great to play again with him at some stage. Do you gig much yourself?

Definitely worth keeping it though!
I started on precision, and do still use them for various stuff, but we have a fair bit of melody going on in the band with backing singing, synths as well as the standard line up, and the jazz just sits really nice in the mix without booming everyone to death.
Have you come across the BassBuzz forum and it's course - Beginner 2 Badass? It is really really good. It's run by a bloke called Josh Foss Green - who has loads of free videos on youtube, and he plugs his course. You need to pay, but it's really really good. It sets you a proper structure and routine, and the guy is very knowledgeable and funny to boot. Worth checking out the free vids on Youtube alone I reckon.
Ooo, I'd stick like glue to that drummer!
This band I'm in now has been together just before covid, so about a year and a half. However, then covid happened so we were restricted, and it's only in the last 6 months that we've got a permanent drummer, so we're at the, "probably about ready to record individual instruments for demos" stage. We've done a few, but need to do more. Had to cancel a gig that would have been this bank holiday weekend as the sodding PA blew up. But we're hoping to do a small gig in the local pub we all go to. Maybe in a month or two I guess.

Yeah there's no way I'd get rid of it but just feel a bit daft playing it at the moment. I haven't come across that site before but I'll have a look at those vids, thanks for the recommend.
The drummer was best man at my wedding so don't think he'll be able to get rid of me that easy! we used to gig together ages back at local weddings/beer festivals etc so would be nice to jam with him again.
Yep covid has been an all round pisser for bands hasn't it, pain in the arse about the PA too. What sort of stuff do you play, is it covers/originals?

Yeah, it's worth checking out - even the free vids are great to get you going. Haha, good drummer retention skills there Yup, though while Covid has fucked a lot of things up, we ended up losing 2 band members in the process who, to be honest, were holding us back, and then we jammed like fuck for ages to get it where we want it, so small victories I guess. I posted a few early demo's of three tracks we did fairly average versions of (live in the studio - no production yet). It's our own music - no covers Let me quote it from the previous page, hang on

Really like that first track quadfather, builds up brilliantly and very interesting playing and arrangement from all involved. You are basically playing the music I always wanted to play in the bands I was in when I was younger but the singers just wanted to do short indie pop/rock songs and before that grunge stuff :-)

Thanks for the feedback - it's appreciated. Yes, it's a bit of a builder isn't it. It's actually quite an emotional one for me and the guitarist as it really reminds me of my Dad and the guitarist lost a friend a few years ago, and it reminds him of him. If it's any consolation, I had exactly the same problem years and years ago in a band. Obsessed with bloody pixie covers and 2 guitarists constantly arguing are the biggest memories

I love she comes alive it's gotta be one of my favourites. There are 3 synths on that intro, one of them being played by me with the bass slung over me and I have about 1 second to flick between the bass station and the bass guitar when it kicks in! But I love the spookiness factor / prog factor too Fun fact : that bassline is simply a deconstructed D chord with a little flavour on top but I think me and the drummer have got a good groove with it now. Well, I like it anyway!

Obsessed with bloody pixie covers and 2 guitarists constantly arguing are the biggest memories Ha ha well i would have been one of those guitarists😂 We wrote a lot of stuff and I wrote most of the riffs and some lyrics, but any grand ideas I had to make things longer, more layered, complex arrangements, build ups etc. were quashed as we needed hit singles. Our singer really thought we would make it. I never did.... We did play all the main places in Manchester though and had a Thursday night resident spot at the boardwalk for a while. Good times 😊

Well, you've got to try when you're younger haven't you. I'm the opposite to your singer - I can happily plod away for ages if the groove is right. Our issue is keeping the tracks short! We recorded one the other week, and it was about 12 minutes long ffs It was fun, but it needs arranging. Small world isn't it. I was in a band in the east midlands years ago, and now I'm 22 minutes on the train from Manchester! Sounds like you had fun in town either way!

Shit, look at this. a) that colour is to die for b) it's got enough of the decent fender spec without having to pay more for the ultra range c) Fretless, but with markers. Man, I gotta have a go on one of those.
