Does anyone here run their Series S/X in dev mode at all? I watched that video posted in the retro thread of a PS1 emulator running on the S and am sorely tempted to get it going on mine now.

I currently have a Series X in my living room and my GF has a One X in the bedroom. Do we sell the One X and get a Series S? The TV in the bedroom is 1080p, so resolution isn't an issue. Storage for the Series S is only half the size, but it is SSD and the difference in loading times tends to be insanely good. I'm just wondering if there are any draw backs. We don't use the One X as a 4K machine, so generally performance is pretty good. Would it be better than the Series S as a 1080p machine? Ray tracing isn't a big deal for me (yet). I probably would for the QoL improvements that the SS would bring. It might also be worth upgrading while the X1X still has some value? And the Series S is a fantastic looking console! Just to add my two cents, I also think you should upgrade. I got myself a Series X and then gave my son the Xbox One X which was my previous main console. As soon as I got used to the speed of the SSD, going back to the One X was insanely painful. Which was weird, since it was my main console for so long. But as others have said, the upgrade is definitely worth it. Sooner rather than later, because your Xbox One X is depreciating in value.

I did this replacing my old Xbox one X in my office with a series s to go with the series x in the living room. It is brilliant having the same experience, just at a lower resolution. The only drawback is that it's largely rendered physical games redundant despite the Series X's disc drive as I need digital copies if I want to continue playing across machines.

I should also say that after a few days of my son having the Xbox One X, I just could not live with myself, him having to live with that as his main console. I jumped on it once after I got my Series X to faff about in the settings and the sluggishness of the console (which had, up until this point, had never bothered me), killed me. So I bought my son this. (Edit: Apologies for this insane size image. What do we recommend as a photo hosting service that we can use when posting images. The image below is from my Facebook. I have tried hotlinking from OneDrive and Google Drive. No good)

Good dad
I probably mentioned already that putting a 1TB SSD inside the One X breathes new life into it, and for me the series S that I originally bought was a bit of a weird upgrade from a One X (I was in the middle of playing Man of Medan and that lost the One X enhancements so was quite a disappointing first impression). Now that there are more games out there that make good use of the S it's a decent purchase, but I kind of regretted it and ended up replacing the S with an X shortly after

Into The Pit looks like a modern Heretic/Hexen I got the same vibe. Then they started talking about trebuchets and I turned it off.

Bollocking bollocks- other half grabbed a Toshiba USB 3 drive that wasn’t needed from work, plugged it in, but, though the Series S will recognise it fine, it thinks it’s not USB3. I’ve double checked the Toshiba website and it is 3.0, tried another cable, but no dice. Is there a particular file format they need?

I have a Toshiba drive and it works OK. Are you using a USB 3.0 cable?

It does look pretty damn good, although I wonder how good it will look in the 60fps mode.

Tried a couple of formats of it today, plugging it in the Series S says something along the lines of “Toshiba USB 3.0 drive plugged in”… then refuses to recognise it as such when I try to do anything. Anyway, something's ducked, have tried two cables but will order another just in case, ta 👍

Can't say I've ever had issues with drives on the One or SX, just plug them in regardless of format and it'll prompt you to format it again. I'd say check if the USB A end of the cable has a blue bit inside the connector (giveaway that it's definitely at least USB 3.0)
Or just try plugging it into a PC and format it and drag a large file over. If it copies at 100+ MB/s then it should be good.

What's the recommended storage expansion for the Series range? My 500GB (well, 384) has been rinsed already: thanks, Flight Sim.

The Seagate drive is the only thing that will allow you extra space for Series S games. But with the price it is you might as well sell your S and get an X. If you only need storage for back compat games then you can get any old USB 3 drive.

Or get any old drive and use it for cold storage; it'll let you copy Series titles to a slow drive, you just can't run them from there. Then, when you wanted to play you'd have to copy back to the internal drive from the cold storage. That's what I did for a little while before just biting the bullet and buying the Seagate expansion for my Series X.

I have just realised I have pre-ordered the xbox one version of battlefield 2042, I'm thinking I may have fucked up, since i guess they must be selling series s/x versions of games now, right?
Hopefully rodger microsoft will let me cancel my order, I'll need to look into it tonight.

The expansion card is expensive, but well worth it.

As rightly said, though, the £250 for the Series S + £180 (at best) for the expansion is practically the cost of the Series X which has almost double the available storage from the get-go.
But yeah - even on my Series X - it is a bit of game changer. Zero wrangling of games on and off the machine, deletions, and annoying re-installations. Pricey, but totes worth it for me.

Okidoke. I mean, if I see a series X available, I'll be on it like a shot! I only relented and 'settled' on the S because I've not got a fancy TV. Yet.

The expansion card is expensive, but well worth it. It really is, takes the space from a little bit of a squash if you want a big range of fun, to so much you couldn't possibly play them all. It's great

Has anyone tried using the seagate drive across multiple machines? I seem to remember they touted it as "your game collection can travel with you" when they first showed it.
The cost becomes a bit easier to swallow if I could install everything to it and then just swap between the X/S or a friend's machine without any fuss.
