Atomic heart Very good worldbuilding and graphics were OK I guess... The dialogue though...It has been mentioned before but who in the holy hell approved that? The protagonist is extremely unlikeable and the level up boxes that orgasm when you spend XP points was just too much...
Didn't see any overt pro Russia propaganda that couldn't just have been parody though I didn't get far... In the end it was the stupid combat that made me quit. The very basic enemy has a knock down attack which can stun lock you. Fall down, get back up, get knocked down again or get choked to death by a stupid robot with a Hitler 'stache... Of course you can parry their attack but only if you're looking straight at them and see the icon. Most of the time they're not center screen though (especially after they knock you down) or the icon is sneakily hidden behind your own weapon.
Signalis Resident Evil without the mansion. Slow moving, awkward shooting, scarse ammo... Some interesting puzzles and the world is alright. In true Resi fashion the best fights are those you avoid. This isn't helped by the run speed which is more of a light jog. It has no auto-save feature, probably to stay true to Resident Evil, though that's just stupid. All it means is after any moderately challenging thing you do you just backtrack to a save point. Also if you pick anything up you have to wait for a screen to pop-up telling you what the object is and then wait a bit before you can confirm you want to pick it up, all whilst not pausing the game. So good luck running past an enemy and snagging some precious bullets. Stopped at the first boss fight. It thankfully put a save point just prior to the fight but you have to drop down and watch an unskippable cutscene every time you attempt it. Still have no idea what you're supposed to do. The movement was just a tad too clunky to accomodate those action sequences.

Not feeling it. The metroidvanious game structure may be unique, but honestly I don't feel it's working to its advantage because levels have such simplistic, repetitive design devoid of any detail that I don't like backtracking through them at all. Generic enemy design doesn't help either, and the ammo pickup system is annoying. And for some reason you have a 1.5m diameter which makes dodging projectiles in corridors an inexplicable problem.
I wouldn't say it's bad, but I just kept getting bored whenever I played it. It just made me want to play Hexen instead, which also had a lot of backtracking but far more interesting level design to mitigate the issue.

Snake IIRC the first Signalis boss has vulnerable phases after he's shot at you a few times. Just run around the thing in the middle of the room so you can use it as cover until you can damage it. Although I didn't last much longer than that before abandoning it too in fairness.

Ahh, Hexen, the one game that would be great if not for those switches that were the same color as the walls. I think that asking the player to see those, is expecting a bit too much out of them. Also the centaurs. They slow down every fight they are in. This problem aside, I did finish it. But I could never finish the Deathkings expansion. Like most expansions of the era, it's aimed at hardcore players and it shows. Too many centaurs.

This was quite a disappointing game for me, LTK explained it better than I could in a previous post so I'm not going to expand on this too much. I only played for about an hour before giving up, it's a shame because it's pretty atmospheric and I liked the creepiness of the enemies you fight but that's about all the positive things I have to say about this game.

Darkest Dungeon
Reached day 54 and can't really be bothered to continue. It just feels so tedious and unrewarding that I can't see myself wanting to go back to it.
Pokémon Shield
Defeated 5 of the 8 gym leaders and am thoroughly bored. There are still the same tedious mechanics that were in the early games. I don't think Pokémon is for me.

Isn't Darkest Dunfeon meant to be more about the journey than actually finishing it? I remember a friend once talking me through a number of runs that all ended in failure after many hours, butbhe just takes another stab at it every halloween.

For me, it suffers from the same thing that Battle Brothers does - keeping 12-20 dudes fully equipped and upgraded and injury-free is just too much hassle after a certain point. I love Darkest Dungeon for both its gameplay and aesthetics, but there's just too much damn stuff.
After lots of runs, I finally played it using a walkthrough last year. Basically this meant that I wouldn't be surprised/wiped by boss encounters, and could get the right party together and do them first time. I still only made it halfway through the game before burning out.
Wonderful game, but too much. Iratus Lord of the Dark is a much more sane attempt at the genre and is a lot of fun.

Death Stranding (Epic). I know Norman Reedus is probably popular and I liked him in the Walking Dead, but do I want to look at his face all the time? Do I want to listen to his grumbling and moaning? To put it in his words - "Nah". Plus what's with this Kojima's obsession with pissing.

Played about 75 minutes of Solar 2, turned from an Asteroid into some planets, stars and eventually a Black Hole. Hovered up the Universe and was set back to the start.
I'm sure there is more to do, but with the fairly fiddly controls it's not that much fun. And I'm just not that interested in creating huge multi-star constellations and what not. So that's it. Kind of finished, but not really.
Edit: Missed the Darkest Dungeon responses, but you are probably right. I didn't finish Pathologic 2 either and it was still a worthwhile experience.

The endgame of Darkest Dungeon is probably its weakest point, unfortunately. The game is still an absolute masterpiece, but those last few missions are a real grind if you don't just look them up.

Late to the party but I've been playing Dead Cells. Was really enjoying it but have now reached Stilted Village and it's went from measured and enjoyably difficult to a big chaotic mess.

I think you can avoid stilted village by doing one of the other paths, but the other routes are probably harder. A purple build using the ice bow and another bow is normally pretty good. The explosive crossbow is another absolute beast of a weapon.

Its arguably the toughest stage in the game, given how chaotic it can be. I used to depend on traps for that stage, quite heavily, and avoided being on the ground floor where possible.
It's a defining level though. It'll make you 'get good' and although the following stages are hard too, they're no harder than the village.

C&C Red Alert 3
Coming from RA2, I'd forgotten I had this and wanted to give it a try after remembering I didn't like it at the time. It's been given the big budget treatment but in true EA fashion they've added a co-op partner to the campaign which can't be turned off and just gets in the way. I'm also not a huge fan of the art style which I think is unappealing at best.

Lines take forever to read, and some repeat ones are triggered whenever you get too close to items (yes game, I already know I can't lift these rocks with my bare hands, thank you very much). There's some titanic swapping of sub-items. And unlike other Zelda games, getting past certain enemies isn't exactly obvious. Plus, the color palette is terrible.
Maybe one day I'll grab the Switch remake, I'm sure it must have all kinds of modern day quality of life updates.

Tried Only If, a free walking simulator/puzzler. Unfortunately there are some pretty big problems with it. There are no subtitles, but the voice on the radio is not always easy to understand. That can be a problem simply because of narration, but sometimes there is also stuff in there that is quite relevant to the current task/puzzle. I didn't play long, but there are also just cases where the game moves fairly quickly while expecting something specific from the player. There was one case where the voice was still going on, but it was so far away I could essentially not understand anything anymore.
It just wasn't very playable and the developer did only take the UX into account to a degree.

Ha, I bounced hard off The Ball when I played it too; I had had it in my backlog for a long time when I discovered it was set in the same universe as The Solus Project, which I enjoyed. But they are only very tangentially related. It got reviewed well at release but felt very outdated by the time I got to it.
