Guessing when Roger Reedpop will pull the plug on the EG forums.
Fun while it lasted, but think I'd seen all of the content it had to offer.

Final Fantasy XII (Switch)
Just boring. I didn't like the lead character (or any of them that much) and the plot was pretty dull (politics mostly).
The game had a lot of good ideas in, but was bloody complicated. The gambit system was like a mini programming language and there were so many things you had to remember and work on that it was ridiculous. I think what ended it for me was the bosses. You had to look up just about all of them to understand how to defeat them. The last ones I fought were some little pains in the arse who were apparently there to kick the crap out of anyone who used gambits and to beat them you needed to turn them off.
I also think I'm getting a bit sick of really long, twee RPGs with loads of filler... or maybe its just this one. Witcher 3 and Ys VIII I loved.
Managed 50 hours in this before packing in and thinking there are better things to do with my life... like posting online.

FFXII is not only my favourite final fantasy but is in my top 5 JRPs.

I never used the gambits much. Just basic stuff like healing. I liked it, but it left me mostly cold.

Final Fantasy 12 was the last time I bough one day 1. I remember rushing out to buy it with the same excitement I always had for a FF release and something about that game just turned out the lights on my love for the genre. Only recently have I played and somewhat enjoyed DQ11 and Octopath Traveller but Ff12 remains the game that killed a genre for me

FF12 left me cold on my first playthrough. Around 12 months later, I read some guides on powergaming it and went back to it. At that point it clicked with me and I loved it. Mechanically, it's probably the deepest of the singleplayer FF games, but it doesn't make itself easy to like at first.

Speaking of Final Fantasy I thought I'd give FFXIV another go.
Got as far as the character creation screen and gave up. I'm sure there's a good game in there, and it seems very popular but I just cant get past how the characters look like dodgy Skyrim mods.

Very limited beard options. Went for the arcanist class, the one that can apparently summon a pet to fight alongside you. Have only done the first couple of tutorial missions so far though.

I enjoyed XII when I played through it last year. When the gambit system clicks it's brilliant. It's the story that lets it down though. I couldn't really tell you what the plot was or what part the characters play. (Except for the main character Vaan who plays absolutely no part whatsoever. He could be cut from the game and nothing would change.)

And wasn't the Han Solo type dude (Balthier?) going to be the main character during development, until they remembered FF games need an effeminate emo teenager protagonist?

That's the one! Also, Chewbacca is a scantily-clad rabbit-lady.

Gears tactics
I was enjoying it despite the forced repetitive side missions but right near the end the game pulls out 3 more forced repetitive side missions but with cheap difficulty modifiers like enemies take no damage in over watch or enemies always evade when not flanked in cover. Never understand why devs have to drag out a game even longer with some old repetitive shit (also recycles the same old maps) To make it worse the next mission is actually easy compared to this shit
Maybe the devs did a massive poo on the office floor and had to clean it up and didn't have time to do any work on the side missions ?

That's the one! Also, Chewbacca is a scantily-clad rabbit-lady. This is another issue with JPRPG's... I play them and then my wife wanders in and wonders why "I" dressed my party like they should be partying with Hugh Hefner. And who was this that went? Was this Addy or someone else?

I get these too. I just say "IDK, I didn't design this game". It doesn't work I will admit, though, Rabbit girl >>>>>>>> Chewbacca

Anyways I just need to finish Yakuza 0 then I can get properly stuck into this.

This reminds me, there was some really nice PS4 FFXII themes available for the console, which were accompanied by some decent music too. But one particular theme had those bunny ladies and there was one of them that clearly looked like a child/young teen version wearing the same barely there thong outfit, with her arse prominently turned toward the screen... Perhaps normal for Japan, but I immediately thought it looked way too noncey, so that got deleted sharpish. I think the deleted poster was Rogueywon. He might be back already though, as I saw a post of his where he mentioned screwing up changing his font geek account over to a new email address, as it's a time limited changeover or something.

GRID. It's a shame because it looked lovely, but on normal there was no challenge at all, and on hard the AI takes you out at every opportunity, and you always come off worst. Messing with assists helps a bit, but it kills the handling and feels really lifeless. Couldn't find a happy medium, so in the bin it is.

Indeed. On Xbox - I believe the Switch version is more of a straight arcade racer.

I've got the Switch version (which is a port of GRID Autosport) and it's actually the closest thing to a decent simcade racer on the console. It plays well enough but does feel a bit dated and soulless.

I’ve abandoned Plague Tale.
I’m glad I gave it a go. The setting, tone, style, etc all very interesting and cool. The gameplay not so much. After my 6th attempt and trial-and-erroring one particular section, and dying yet again, it stopped being fun in any way.
I might go back to it eventually but I need something fun and joyful for a little while

Life is Strange 2 officially parked for now. I know it picks up eventually but its so slow and the brothers such rubbish wooden characters, I don’t have the time or motivation to push through at the moment.
At least it got me to replay Captain Spirit which is excellent.

Ori and the Blind Forest (Definitive Edition). I was doubtful if this game was for me, but I saw it on Steam for €5 so I thought I'd give it a try anyway. Indeed it wasn't for me.
The overload of cute-sad didn't do much for me, which is probably a pretty big part of the game's appeal already. But I also struggled with the jump mechanics, I didn't like the combat system etc. Went on to see if it gets better with more abilities after you get the obligatory double jump, wall jump, air dash etc., but I didn't like the bash mechanic at all, that made me enjoy it even less--not least because it forced me to use thumbstick instead of d-pad.
I also hated the escape sequence, I learned there's more of them and even a stealth section. Realised that going on would just lead to ever more frustration, so after 4 hours I quit. It seems like a great game for the right audience, but for almost everything I like in a platformer it seems to go in the opposite direction.
