I am hoping for a close one. I think that's as positive I can be really, Spencer should be several timezones away, we're heading to the ultimate stronghold and they've had a match to figure us out a bit.
And Nick Berry is the ref 😳 Bang go the hopes of any scrum decisions that make sense. De Groot is just gonna do his "is this open play?" thing and stand up.

Random thoughts following today's game:
- For all his good points, Itoje is still a penalty magnet. - Furbank has to be England's starting 15 going forwards. - Feyi-Waboso is a future England superstar. - George needs to jettison the Saracens perma-pout if he's to stay as captain. - Sleightholme needs more time on the field during the 6N... - ... As does F. Smith. - As much as I like Dombrandt, he should never start ahead of Earl at No. 8.
A decent summer tour, all told.
Is it September yet?

Thanks, does worry me when I see friends’ boys clattering into each other in Rugby. They’re better at the caution these days, but they’re still being concussed at times. I’ve had four huge concussions from bike crashes over the years, one of which has left a 15 minute hole in my memory so 😬

Not bad when France can bring Dupont on as a sub in the Sevens.

Danno That's for the best, in my view. Wyn Jones has signed for Quins as well. (Not Alun - the prop.)

They could at least have maintained the compromise of Scottish Gas Murrayfield, rather than going full sell out. It's still Landsdowne Road as well.

Felix Jones has quit as defence coach, so that's us in the shitter for the foreseeable future. Whatever is going on in there is fucked up and whoever is responsible needs to walk.

Ugh. This had somehow passed me by 'til now!
What a shitshow.
This did make me smile, though (stolen from Reddit):
Copied and pasted from the Times, via Reddit, so apologies for the wall of text:
Felix Jones, the man credited with revolutionising England’s defence, has resigned from his position as assistant coach with immediate effect, leaving a gaping hole in Steve Borthwick’s coaching team a month out from the beginning of the new rugby season. Sources close to Jones say that the Irishman became unhappy with an unstable working environment, even though Borthwick recently upgraded him from defence specialist to second in command. Jones, who is one of the hottest coaching properties in international rugby and was part of the coaching team that won the World Cup with South Africa in 2019 and 2023, informed Borthwick of his departure a week ago. Jones’s defection raises questions about Borthwick’s management style and his ability to maintain a happy working camp. Also this month it was announced that Aled Walters, the highly rated head of strength and conditioning, was leaving England to take up a role with Ireland under Andy Farrell. There is also uncertainty about the continued involvement of Kevin Sinfield, who has had various roles in the set-up. Tom Tombleson, another strength and conditioning coach who had been in post since 2014, has also left in recent weeks. Jones was praised for making an impact with England’s defence Jones was praised for making an impact with England’s defence REX Walters, along with Jones, was part of South Africa’s backroom team at the 2019 World Cup and had worked under Borthwick at Leicester Tigers before joining him with England. The defection of Walters and the uncertainty over Sinfield’s role is understood to have played a part in Jones’s decision to leave. There will be much speculation about the next move for Jones, who is bound to be in high demand. The 37-year-old’s coaching career began at Munster after a serious neck injury ended his playing days — as a full back, Jones won 13 Ireland caps between 2011 and 2015. Having worked at Munster under Rassie Erasmus, he subsequently took up the South African’s invitation to work with the Springboks, where he ran their attacking strategy before being recruited by England last year to take charge of defence. Jones received a lot of credit for England’s improved Six Nations performance last season, when they finished in the top half of the table and achieved a notable victory over Ireland at Twickenham, using a blitz defence system. And he was praised for his role in England’s near-miss in the first Test against New Zealand in Dunedin last month. He is certain to be in the frame for a role with the British & Irish Lions, who tour Australia under Farrell next summer. David Humphreys, Ireland’s newly appointed performance director, will surely seek to find a role for him in the Irish set-up. The attractions of the system are obvious to national coaches as the centralised contracting system gives Farrell full control over his players. Jones twice won the World Cup with South Africa Jones twice won the World Cup with South Africa REX Some re-jigging of roles is already planned after Ireland’s November Tests, when Farrell will go on his Lions sabbatical, with Simon Easterby deputising as head coach for the Six Nations. Even before last season’s Six Nations, Borthwick was gushing in his praise for his new defence coach. “I have seen people who have worked very hard. This guy? I don’t know whether he sleeps,” he said. “He has the knowledge, the understanding of areas of the game. We were sat the other day looking at some stuff on his laptop, where he was picking apart an area of the game, picking it apart, an area of contact, and showing things that I don’t think I’ve ever heard any other coach discuss. “So I think he has an incredible work ethic and that knowledge is ground-breaking. When he presented to the players last week, the room has that deathly silence. [They were] Hardly blinking, transfixed by what he is saying. That ability to do that is superb. So work ethic, incredible knowledge and grasp of concepts and he has the players’ attention.”

Now, now, Danno - LRZ trying to crack the NFL is the biggest thing that has happened in Welsh rugby this year. Don't spoil it for 'em

Whatevs. I'm busy savouring Welsh tears. Got himself a practice contract so he ain't coming back yet. By the time he's conditioned for the NFL I reckon he's fucked for Union as a winger, no way he keeps his speed with another 10kg on him I wish him well personally but fucking hell of all the talents to lose in the utter collapse of the WRU and their desperate "AAARRIIIIIEGEHHHEEEE HIT THE GATLAND BUTTON" this was quite a hilarious one

I do hope it takes them just a little while longer to work out Garland is not a good coach in the 2020s. Dogidly defending and hoping LZR or North or Liam Williams suddenly pulls something out of their arse isn't an actual game plan.
Like I know Scotland's record isn't great but they have some fucking attacking shape. They just inevitably do not have the raw power to take on the ruthless bastard efficiency of South Africa or Ireland. Toonie has ideas and plans but not necessarily the player base. He was great at Glasgow.

Other than a lack of options and being able to beat England with (annoying) consistency, I'm not sure why Toonie is still in post. He kind of fucked it with Finn like 3 or 4 years back now, and these days everything seems to hinge on him and/or VDW pulling something from nowhere.
I do think another coach can get a bit more out of you at this point. But as above, the question is "who?" And the the only available answer might be Eddie Jones and even I wouldn't wish that on you unless you beat us again
Actually you can have fucking Borthwick then. And Eddie.

Well quite. Toonie is doing above average considering. We're probably not winning a 6N with him but there's noone out there currently who's an improvement. He's better than Gatland, Jones or Borthwick currently.
I'm waiting to see if Franco Smith can get Glasgow further in Europe than the quarters. Or repeat winning the URC. As it's the consistency that's the problem. But he got Glasgow to go win away in South Africa when it mattered.
Also it's not wait on miracles. It's play fast, recycle rucks fast, stretch the defense and vary play. As it creates gaps for VDM to strike into. Even his wonder try the other year was because a variety of cross field kicks from Finn in the build up broke the English defence up so when Farrell returned it the chase was shit and the defence a mess. It's just we can't switch players so by the end of the 6N nobody can still play that fast and if Ireland or South Africa get in amongst it and just stop you passing out wide it all falls apart as the forwards lack the grunt. But given the players at hand what other viable tactics are there?
Also the props need bollocking to stop white line fever when there's an overlap. Ditto the locks trying to shove a dead maul forward. Idiots.
Glasgow's brilliant signings that aren't Scottish qualified tend to be forwards.

I also think Toonie would be a great Lions coach (though probably not the inspirational speaking but). You've got a few weeks, work out your core skill set and dynamically work with that.
Gatland just getting the defence on top and being belligerent has severe limitations in short time frames.
Farrell basically just using the same massive intricate playbook as Leinster means I think next year we're just getting Ireland plus guests to implement that exact plan. When it's Australia and we should have a laugh and just go full Barbarians.
