I actually like the original trilogy story. Especially 3 but I had read some of the books and read all the secret lore stuff in the levels of 3.
In infinite I really appreciated master chief as a main character. Recently played some games with those over the top netflix type characters. Nice to be back with a mostly silent protagonist. Says what needs to be said and I felt infinite managed to show more about him personally than the others managed.

My main problem with the story is it plays out during juddery as fuck cut scenes so I tend to look away to avoid motion sickness.

Strange one for me this. I enjoy it when I'm playing it, but nothing about it makes me want to dive back on it again instantly after I've had a wee session. Combat is decent, but the world is just so vanilla.

The world is definitely vanilla but it's the only game of 2021 where I've been totally addicted and wanted to be playing it when I was doing something else. No other game has done that this year. Must just be how much I enjoy the sandbox combat.

Must just be how much I enjoy the sandbox combat. Returnal, Village and recently Isaac repentance have been like that for me this year. This unfortunately has not. I don't think it's helped that I've been playing Destiny 2 again recently, and that seems to scratch my shooter itch better. I do like the grapple far more than I expected though.

Hah, I’ve only just noticed that the Brutes also know how to chuck those exploding canisters around too, after just taking one to the face whilst hiding behind a rock.

Why can't my brain work out the shortcuts for Master Chiefs gear dammit.
Only using grapple as I can't remember what is what in the heat of battle.

I died so many times in a panic trying to equip the shield. Even after nearly 17 hours it never felt natural in the heat of battle. I did love all four equipments though and loved swapping between them all mid fight. Also finally a halo game where the Hunters are actually hard enemies!!

I think grunt chucking has been a thing for a while hasn't it?
The poor wee guys just can't get a break between the brutes & chiefy.

Although, maybe I'm just mis-remembering and read about grunt throwing in a preview piece for this game though.
Definitely knew about that from somewhere.

Beam to take their shield down, use the thruster to dodge their shit as it cools down faster than grapple. Don't let them get near you as the melee is a one shot.

Got to a hammer boss, mentioned earlier, and he's an utter pain. Close quarters, hard to grapple accurately when he won't bloody leave you alone. This is on Heroic. I reckon I would have just fucked it off on Legendary. Horrible boss.

Grapple 3 times as far as you can and then let rip. It should give you enough distance to get a few shots off. That's what worked best for me against the other boss who does the same thing.
You may need to upgraded cool down to egt the best out of that strategy though.

I reckon I would have just fucked it off on Legendary. Horrible boss. If you haven't learned how to grapple-jump, this is the best time. That's really the only way to put some distance between yourself and him. It will be extremely useful in the open world and against other bosses too.

Yesterday I learned you can grapple the weapons towards you. "Duh," said my 11 year old. It tells you that in the text.
(What text? Thought I.)

I get that little gaming time compared to when I was a nipper that I just don't get people playing games on anything harder than 'normal', are you all masochists or do you have infinite leisure time?
Is this a 'git good' moment

Is this a 'git good' moment I do agree with you. Most games I play on normal these days but because I've played every bungie halo a million times I go straight to heroic on this as normall doesn't create those epic epic battles where you have to adapt on the fly. Normal is still fun for sure but isn't as satisfying when you win each battle.

I'm only 5 or 6 hours into the campaign, but I'm thoroughly impressed.
It does feel as though this is Halo by way of Breath of the Wild. There's a real sense of being in a living, breathing world and I'm really enjoying the way you stumble upon the little set pieces and then the sounds of battle erupt.
The combat is immensely satisfying and a noticeable step-up from something like Far Cry 6 which in retrospect seems horribly floatly and lacking impact.
I'm playing on PC and really surprised how good it all looks and runs considering the spec. Sure I'm only playing in 1080p, but my humble GTX 1660Ti is letting me play this on the high setting and getting a consistent 60fps.

Heroic doesn't seem too bad on this, so far at least. Much easier than Returnal's only difficulty setting certainly. Or at least it is once you factor in Halo's pretty generous checkpointing.

Yeah, I think heroic is probably still the baseline level for Halo. Although this is the point where I would usually say 'the game comes alive at heroic' but it doesnt really in this, I dont think. The enemies seem dumber in this than the rest of them. They sporadically show fits of intelligence but a lot of the time they just run around in circles like gibbering dickheads.
The shields are weaker and they hit harder and thats about it. Oh, and they can and will shoot at you from the other side of the map. I dont know if they do that at lower difficulty levels.

My main problem with the story is it plays out during juddery as fuck cut scenes so I tend to look away to avoid motion sickness. The cut scenes are even more infuriating than I thought they'd be for the single reason that the game is otherwise well polished and extremely fun and challenging. It's not just 30fps animation contrasting badly with an otherwise 60fps presentation... the frame pacing during cut scenes is all over the place, like the Series X is struggling under the weight of the engine, which Digital Foundry confirmed isn't the case. It's just painful to watch. I really hope 343 make it a top priority to fix the cut scenes, because otherwise this is a surprisingly great game.

The 30fps mode also has frame pacing problems even in normal gameplay, and on Xbox One too, so it seems like a general engine issue.
Problem is that they might be too busy tweaking the battle pass to focus on the technical side... I doubt we'll see any fix before next year at least.

Is this a 'git good' moment Partly. Normally I find the default difficulty on most games coma inducingly easy.
Enjoying this, but it's obvious where a sequel needs to built on it. More environmental variety, more campaign missions and set pieces vs the open world stuff.

Really enjoyed the campaign, loved the sense of scale (even if it was more the sense of it than anything else), very excited to see how they evolve the game with DLC. The thought of them being able to release new campaigns relatively frequently is enticing.
