So I think I'm shit at this now. Thought Heroic would be worth a shot because it's what I played the previous Halos on.
But I died ever, ever so much, especially to the first boss. Now I'm at the open world bit, hopefully I can faff around at my own pace and just naturally improve.

The game does the really annoying thing of making your armor crap to begin with. You should focus all your upgrade points on the armor - you'll find enough very quickly. The game does get a lot more similar to the previous games when your armor is maxed.

I died a lot to the first boss on Heroic, and I'm doing a lot better now in the open world with some upgrades. Stick with it. I still die fairly frequently, but checkpoints are common so it's not really an issue for me at least.

Yeah I'll still keep at it. I just remember the other Halos being a lot easier. And I don't know if that's because the games got harder, or because I haven't played then in 10+ years and am just shit now.

If anything this on Heroic is easier than Halo 3 on Heroic, for example. Except that 3 didn't have bosses I guess.

With max armour this is pretty much the heroic of old. The biggest hurdle Ive had so far is the second boss. Its a small room and he kills you pretty fast if he gets in your grill but after that, its been fine.
Even the hunters arent bad, just really, really, really boring now.

The Hunters lock in on you too much in this one, basically no opportunity to hit them in the weak spots.

The only good way to deal with Hunters now is to have a skewer handy and go straight for the head. Nothing else works, really. Missing that, plasma weapons seem to work better than human ones. The ones that fire green shit at you and take ages to kill Wait until you see the red shit variant. Even worse.

Yep spent ages failing to get behind a hunter until I tried just skewering them from the front.
The skewer also does about 20% damage per shot to the boss with the hammer by the mine laser, which was a relief after dying constantly to the first boss and the invisible elite boss.

The skewer basically fucks up everything it hits, especially the rare one..
Always worth carrying one for boss fights or heavies.

I didn't really struggle too much (a few deaths) until I got right to the end with the Harbinger.
Fuck that for a lark. I think I died about 20 times on Heroic before I found somewhere to kill off the rest of the shits so I could concentrate on hammer guy.

I died at least 30 times, hiding didn't work because the hammer guy actively chases you and always seems to know your position. I eventually managed to get into a lucky pattern with a commando rifle and sentinel beam, and the game eventually graced me with a checkpoint when there were only the Brute and an Elite left, which is a big reason why I didn't give up (if I had died at that point, I would have just dropped the difficulty to Heroic).

I'm finding the game quite challenging so far, but that's a good thing. I'm permanently keeping the Ravager gun up my sleeve because it seems capable of finishing any enemy off in no more than a few blasts, bosses included.

Heroic remains well balanced for me. First proper FML spike for me was Humperdoo and Titwank at the end of Pelican Down. Actually only took me seven or eight attempts, but I realised I’d have to schlep off somewhere to find a heavy weapon (Gravity Hammer in this case) to even get off the starting line.
Not tough, in the end, because there’s lots of cover but it did mean my first few attempts were utterly futile which isn’t a great feeling.

Helpfully, the game checkpointed just as the dickhead on the motorbike was right in front of me so I could immediately grapple him off and run him over as soon as the encounter started.
Then it was just a war of attrition to kill the long range one.

Actually, the checkpointing on this thing was something I wanted to ask about. Often it helps me out when I'm constantly dying in a long encounter, but it feels completely random.
Is it based on time? The number of enemies you kill? Moving past a certain point? All of those things?

Then it was just a war of attrition to kill the long range one. Ah. I used explodey things around him to drop his shields then grapple-twatted him in the face and went to town with the hammer. Checkpointing in Halo has always felt a bit random. I guess it’s not being in direct combat for a little while, and undetected (AI has short memory for the rank and file)?

The boss with a the Mining site was approving too nimble for me to get enough grapple distance to give myself time to reload. Then I found myself stood on the small ledge above one of the doors and the fucker didn’t know what to do to and kindly stood still for a bit.
Stuck him a couple of time and shotty’d him to finish up. Cheesed him? Yes. Proud of myself? No, felt a bit dirty. Bothered? Not really.

On heroic for the mine boss after dying constantly I found the needler finishes him off quite quickly and you can keep your distance before grappling when he gets close

Is it based on time? The number of enemies you kill? Moving past a certain point? All of those things? I think it's based on whether you are in a good position at the time. That usually means being realtively far from the closest enemy, staying fully behind cover, and not having empty guns. It's still pretty random, but it can be induced somehow.

I beat the sword guy and got his special sword thing.
It was surprisingly not that hard. Once I killed all his minions, I was panicking because he had a boss-like health bar and thought "well, he's going to charge me with that sword isn't he". But no, he just ran around throwing grenades, and despite the health bar he died in 3 headshots from a regular old rifle.
The energy sword is fun! If you grapple onto enemies you auto-melee them once you reel in.

Christ I have been bored off my tits for the last couple of hours. The start of the Spire section up to and including getting to the surface! What is the point of a vast open world of I'm having to spend hours underground!!!

I just kept backing/running away in a circle and chucking grenades or plasma containers when I got the chance. Did it first time on Heroic although it was a close thing at the end

Campaign done. It really isn't an open world game as there isn't a lot to mop up, but I did prefer the outdoor gameplay for sure.
Question - thought I would give multiplayer a go now I know what I'm doing, why don't I have my grappling hook?. Is it certain modes only it do I have to earn it?

You can get it on maps, but only when they are available (and if you can collect it without dying).
The announcer will say what's coming up, power weapon/active camo etc

Completed it, enjoyable without really pushing things further which is absolutely fine. Wish they'd hit the big old reset button with the plot though, no idea what's going on.

It's funny if you think of the story arc of the first three against whatever the fuck is going on in the the last three.
And, yes, this one really needed to just end whatever is going on and start again. This wasn't a great campaign, in fact I think I preferred H5, and they really needed to draw a line under this shitty story. And get Atriox Jnr a podcast, Jesus Christ...
