Had a proper go on this earlier, it really is the most fun to play since the original. The open world stuff really seems to work and all the side-missions seem to be fun so far, and the rewards meaningful.
Really enjoyable stuff!
edit: will see if it stays this fun - might get old quick. But for now, good times!

I've been enjoying it, combat is very satisfying, shits all over Halo 5 which I didn't get on with at all, especially with those shitty Warden bosses and the Prometheans who I just can't stand to fight against.

I played a bit of Halo 4, which was decent but never finished it. Never touched Halo 5
Infinite is a million miles better (and more "Halo" than 4). Bit of a nostalgia trip as well but I think it's been long enough that that is absolutely fine.
Looking forward to playing more!
Just need to get a modern TV now with 4k and HDR to enjoy it at it's best.
Although the graphics aren't a marvel, the world feels well realised and it's all pretty solid on series X.

Just watching the credits roll, seemed really short. Overall enjoyed a lot, save for one section. Concentrated on the campaign, so barely touched the side stuff. I will certainly spend more time in the world. A solid 8/10 for me. 4 and Reach are still my fav campaigns though.

Now that bit further in really not sure what to think.
Initially I thought wooo this is great Halo is back. But the more play the more get fed up moving between objectives. Problem with open maps is you never know which way people will go so have to build things to stop it breaking.
For example you know that at point A person A will have a Scorpion tank so throw in X and make the road Y metres in width. Now you are never sure which vehicle someone will be in you need to offer X routes to encourage people to use X, and if do choose a Scorpion but they don't want you in a Scorpion you find yourself getting stopped by trees to encourage you to go back and get a Moongoose. Never mind all the cliffs that have to spend time zipping up.
That and a lack of truly epic set pieces (where are my two way scrab fights while being bombed by banshees) also due to the open world. And i am left thinking it is a good game but not a great one that is missing something. For what it is worth I liked Halo 4 as a decent first attempt.

As a sandbox to mess around in with a couple of mates for an hour or so I think it'll be fine. Solo it's just a bit boring, despite having great mechanics. Big map but samey and devoid of any really interesting encounters. The old level-based format at least keeps you feeling like you're making progress. Not sure about this yet. The bones are there but it feels half-finished. There's stuff to collect but it's just a case of going and getting it, no little side stories to make those bits feel special. MP on the other hand is great.

I mean, by all accounts the campaign is barely a third finished based on what they cut out to get it out the door. That said, I've really been enjoying it as my zone-out game of choice. Not an even slightly memorable campaign so far, but for just tooling about the open world having adventures and fucking shit up? I'm digging it. Later land masses add in flying vehicles, too, and up the ante on the combinations of bad guys you run into... I've had some pretty amazing organic firefights. It's funny how GamePass moves the needle on this stuff, too. As a fifty quid boxed product I'd be fuming. As an in-subscription early access (effectively) shooter sandbox? It'll do.

It just isnt a very good sandbox. They cut you off from it for like the last quarter of the campaign and funnel you underground for most of the story missions so you cant grapple past the story beats (they also turn your grapple off if you get too far away from the objective. I made it half way up one if the many, many, many lift shafts before the button stopped working). And the missions themselves are so boring. Go here, press a button, listen to monologue, go there, press a button, listen to monologue.
I dunno, the more I think back on it, the worse I think it is. The story is terrible, the missions are boring and the open world, really, adds nothing at all to the game other than giving you a playground and a weapons dispenser to make meme videos.

The multiplayer is pretty fun. I haven't got beyond that yet. A few games of that, then a few games of the still rather broken Battlefield 2042 a night is keeping me quite happy just now. Even in it's not right state, BF still kind of works 7 entertains...when it doesn't fuck up class selection/changes etc

I agree with the game pass thing. I'm also thinking that given this is Halo it won't be left to rot but they'll keep adding to it and filling it out. I just hope they have the talent onboard. It's just strange to have a Halo campaign I'm not arsed to play.

Great to play with the hook thing, I keep scaling huge buildings for fun.
Only issue I have with it is the driving isn't very good. Too many things stop your vehicle suddenly or flip it .. nowhere near as fun as the original as you can't flow very well when you have to keep jumping out to flip your vehicle!!

Yeah the vehicles have no heft to them. Touch a pebble and over they go. The original vehicles were always very horizontally drifty but these are way too fly-away in terms of vertical movement to be satisfying.

Does the single player improve after the initial pre-credits level? It was a bit dull and made me want to play Titanfall 2 again.

No, if anything it gets worse as the environments for every main mission are basically identical.
Ymmv, but I am not a 'make your own fun' kind of person so fucking around in the overworld holds very little appeal, so it doesnt make up for the main event being a bit chod.

I *am* a "make your own fun" kinda guy, and I had a blast in the overworld. But Nick ain't wrong about the main missions. Each one is like the game grinding to a shuddering halt, and draining all the joy out of the whole thing.
I'm on the penultimate mission, and I'm very *very* close to just sacking it off and calling it done. I liberated all of the FOBs and rescued the majority of the squads, and caved in the skulls of most HVTs. That was the fun of the game for me, for sure not the missions.

(according to the stats I got a good 30 hours out of the game, btw, so it's not like I feel ripped off - but really only the overworld and missions set entirely on the overworld were fun for me)

By now, you know exactly how the story ends, so you wont miss anything if you do bin it.

I'm still plodding along and enjoying the combat but the missions and structure really don't work for me either. Where's the momentum and the set pieces and variety of environment and the excitement? I can't point to a single moment that stands out, which for a Halo campaign is pretty damning. Just a bare-bones Ubi map punctuated by lousy missions in really sterile environments with amazing gunplay and weak bosses.
Needed to be left for years in the oven.

Much as I enjoyed much of my time with it, and the combat really is sublime, this fucker needs a(nother) reboot. I guess in its favour is the multiplayer, which is going down well, but this campaign needs to become a footnote in history. They go back to the drawing board, go dark for a couple of years, and then release something actually good and memorable and worthy of the name. This really does feel like a highly polished proof of concept more than anything.

I said this earlier in the thread when I was about half way through the campaign but they sacrificed a *lot* to get an open world single player and it absolutely wasnt worth it. A better team might have been able to handle it but having 90% of the main missions be set in the internal halo structure with the story being filled in by king gorilla incessantly bollocking on like a badly written Klingon was just interminable.
Walk through corridor, clear room of enemies, press button, get some bullshit hologram story dump, walk through corridor, clear room of enemies, press button..... terrible

And for a 'choose your own adventure' the levels are so basic. 'No you cant press that button until you kill everyone'. Fuck you, hologram, I swung over here like fucking tarzan. I deserve that button.
