Pretty sure they could just cancel the last gen version and not really have much backlash.

Yeah, surely they could just ring fence that feature for Series Xboxes? Hell, even Series X exclusively.
Unless they simply couldn't get the performance right.
I've often felt 343 needed a break from the 'teah, but you're not Bungie' stick but after initially enjoying Infinite it became a chore and is the only Halo I have yet to finish on any level, never mind soloing on Legendary. Amd seems split screen with my kids won't happen now either.

Completed the story and haven't touched it since.

The more I look at this and the more it becomes apparent that obviously this game isn't finished and it's actually being made in real time as opposed to providing live service content.

It's unfortunate as I think the campaign is excellent. If it managed to add some more epic set pieces that the series is know for it would have been amazing. As said above surely just ditch the old Xbox version for split screen, seems like a no brainer. It's fine for me as I play with my son in different rooms and we love the multiplayer together still, especially the 4v4 with my brains and his epic reflexes we do well and we can't wait to play the campaign together.

The campaign, I thought, if you stick to the story was pretty good. The actual mechanics were about as slick as Halo gets. The open world stuff though, was just too repetitive and not very interesting after the first few encounters. Plus the world didn't actually seem very big or varied compared to other open worlds. But it was a decent attempt at something different for Halo. Definitely felt a bit cross gen however.

They said that all first party games released in the first two years of the Series X|S era would be cross gen. I wonder if there’s a fear of class action or something equally stupid if they split the feature set that way?
That’s the nicest read I can find if the decision. All other paths lead to Fuckwit Town.

Nah, besides Flight Sim already came out as next gen only game. I belive some other games have also had next gen only features?

I think FS was released earlier on PC so got a bye?
There have been others with extra features, mainly visuals, but split screen co-op is in the Halo DNA so might be though of differently.

Finding positives, Forge and the other bits in November will bring me back to playing regularly for a while at least. If Forge is a good as the previews and leaks suggest then 343 is clearly hoping that and campaign co-op will deflect attention from the shitshow with the delays to the season pass, QoL fixes and everything else.

Forge is indeed looking fairly insane. Tbh I feel like forge is the thing that always made halo stand out, and in a world of so many shooters, much better than the whole live service thing. It's basically just getting your customers do to the live part.

Halo won't improve if they keep on removing things that gave the franchise it's identity. It doesn't need to be a live service game because it's especially clear that 343 don't have the ability to actually fulfill the remit for a game to be a live service. They have deep seated mismanagement issues and it's incredibly weird that for a supposed major IP for the Microsoft it's been routinely mishandled for quite a while. At this point maybe get another studio to take the reins and for 343 to maybe try something else that isn't Halo.

Is that true? Surely Reach did pretty good numbers for Bungie? You could interpret that another way. The story had ended and Reach was a nice full stop, love letter to the series. You can’t really argue that everything that came after it absolutely was a series in decline.

They need to completely wipe the slate clean. At this point I wouldn’t even mind a straight ‘The Halo’ remake of the the first one.

They need to get rid of the weird relationship thing between Chief and Cortana. Or have them fuck. One of the two.

Halo infinite still plays well and is a good foundation to build on, at least gameplay wise. But the engine, dev tools and staff turnover they have mean that regular updates are impossible.

I know the relationship is kind of central to the 'plot' but it is breaking the story. 'The Weapon' is legitiately the worst character of any game I have played recently. I just cant fathom why they wrote her as being just so fucking obnoxious.

I see the lead engine dev has resigned, I've continually heard the engine was a bugger to work with and it was based off the engine used in the OG Halo which is entirely normal but like Nick says I think a total reboot of the entire project might be the thing to do or...just can the franchise.

Should be a great deep-dive documentary on 343's handling of Halo waiting to be made somewhere.

I'm watching that video now and it's kind of embarrassing that full co-op functionality is pretty much present for all intents and purposes and the upper management is like nah fuck it because it's all about the live service which as we all know is not great. It's also incredible that it's almost a year old and it still has incorrect frame pacing which makes the 30h mode jerky AF, the cutscene animations still haven't been fixed in regards to frame rate, the desync issue is still present. It's absolutely baffling.

Would love to see a warts n all documentary of Infinite's development and year one.
Would expect a grim insight of when dev goes bad.

The DF video also repeats the speculation that there appear to be limited resources being given for the company as well as the report that the studio were primarily using contractors with 6 month contractors for a lot of development which really does explain a lot if you think that you're working from a base where you may not have the full documentation around to carry on with stuff in a timely manner because the people working on it aren't there anymore.

Weird, maybe MS know it hasn't lived up to expectations so haven't provided the unlimited dosh to keep it up to date.

Just played the splitscreen local with my eldest for the last 3 hours.
We have a few Xboxes at home so may try 4 player too.
Got to be quick with the invite switcheroo.
Only one crash to home and a few minor graphics glitches. Even did the 'nick a starship cannon to become a walking scorpion' trick and that worked too - though no walk animation with that equipped.
Cracking, very little slowdown and was a hoot.
We played on Legendary - not sure if it scales for 2 players but having an infinite scorpion helped a bit.
Feels like it wouldn't need too much polish - but probably more complicated than that - maybe enough publicity will change 343/MS's minds.

Glad you're having fun with it!
Playing through the Halo campaigns with my brother was always a blast, ah well, maybe I'll see if he's up for playing some MCC later.

Yup, same here - played it this weekend too with my partner, went throught the whole campaign and as the second player she even got all her achievements popping too. Like you we had only one crash to home and like you also said a few graphic glitches here and there but nothing that spoils the enjoyment.
It was fantastic, felt very much like Halo of old and for us the best Halo campaign for a very long time, it just doesn't make sense not to finish it, it has to be like 99% there surely!? Geez, it's great as it is, we could live with the issues if 343i just make it easier to access!
