I know it's not a graphical showcase but I really like the clean and clear look of Halo Infinite, I hope they don't stuff their next game with ridiculous amounts of detail just because they can.
Unreal will help with Microsoft's 18 month contract fetish as every developer knows Unreal and will get up to speed fairly quickly. They've been clearing out some of 343's shitty management, too.

they better not be remaking Halo 1 again
Hope this rebranded studio is actually good, tbh I found 343 games to be very average

Unreal will help with Microsoft's 18 month contract fetish as every developer knows Unreal and will get up to speed fairly quickly. Ultimately I think that's one of the biggest reason for the switch from a proprietary engine to a widely available one, no need to spend any time getting new staff up to speed on it. Of course Microsoft could change their shitty hire and contract expire policy but I guess that wouldn't balance the spreadsheet.

The new Forge “demo” certainly looks impressive and it sounds like they’re taking the right approach. I don’t really want a Halo remake though, and it does look like that’s what’s coming - without doing an actual comparison the Chief armour at the end looks more like the original than the new, though I may be off on that and my memory just being shit. Maybe that’s not something to read into but itös difficult not to, I guess.
Every Halo game has a lot of good stuff along with some bad, so I’d like to see them just keep moving forward. Though maybe it is all just too convoluted and a reboot may streamline a lot of stuff and be a better starting point for any new games. I’m torn, but hopefully they manage to sort out their shit and deliver some really good games through and through.

I just hope whatever is coming skips the remainder of this gen, if what xbox are promising as the largest technical leap ever seen in the next console, do Halo justice and get it ready for launch.

I'm not holding out any hope really. I'm amazed that a studio has been given so many chances and repeatedly keeps dropping the ball although at the same time I am aware that a good amount of that is down to MS and its position on temporary contracts.
I'd imagine a reboot is on the cards because honestly who is keeping track outside of the obsessives?

The way they're talking about "multiple games" makes me wonder if we're getting a remake (rather than a reboot) of Halo: CE, plus a sequel to Infinite. At this stage, though, any sequel should really be a soft reboot anyway, because I imagine the number of people genuinely keeping up with the lore is vanishingly small.

The halo story is a mess (not that its amazing), with infinite they had to soft reboot the story after the mess that was 5.
It does not matter if the rename themself and change engine, they need talented people to create a good plot and evolve the gameplay, Everything that 343 did with the gameplay for singe player ( I don't play MP now) was naff ideas that have been seen in other games and done better
Halo is another victim of toxic positivity at the studio and the deranged hardcore fanbase

I personally think a live service hero shooter battle royale would do perfectly.

If they do remake again it just shows they can't make a new game. Halo infinite single player is pretty much the first game at the base level
the industry is just endless remakes and remasters as they can't do better compared to older games in the series

Anniversary was a remaster, not a remake. This would be a much larger undertaking, even as a direct remake. If it’s expanded in any way, which I would assume it would be, then it’s bigger still - effectively Halo CE Reimagined.

Which itself was a reset after stuffing the whole Didact nonsense from Halo 4 into a fridge. It’s genuinely quite amazing 343 got the grace they did because they are actually fucking useless. I wouldn’t actually be mad at a full reset. CE is 20 odd years old and if Sony can remaster games younger than some bottles of sauce in my fridge, it’s only fair MS get a crack.

Yeah, I'm not sure how much more there is to explore with the same master chief incarnation.
But people hated Locke etc for some reason (I liked him), so you can see why they stuck back with MC.

I suppose it was having a next gen Halo but not having the mascot really leading the game. It's kind of normal for such storied franchises. Locke and Co but 343 dis nothing interesting with them. As Nick says they've properly fucked the franchise over the years.

Halo ODST was something a little different (its more a expansion than big AAA budget game)
Sure there is other stories they can do rather than MC (but they tried to do new things from halo 4 and it was not good) Halo 4 enemies were shit to fight

Thy biggest issue with Locke was the advertising hiding the fact you played as him for all but 2 levels. They made it seem like it was a chose how the story goes type game. If they had been upfront it might not have gotten so much hate(plus they made Chief look dumb and weak).
Biggest issue for me was bringing back Cortana and really going into the they love each other shit.
ODST and Reach showed you can make a good Halo game without MC. Plus the Halo Wars games were well received.

I did enjoy how Cortana was Poochie'd in Infinite after all the nonsense in 4 and 5.

I barely remember her which also points to how little I remember of Infinite. I do remember that terrible boss fight with the Brute chief at the end. Like genuinely terrible.

I'd be up for a reboot. Like everyone has said, the story is only of interest to the lore nerds, and I bet even they're bored of it now.
Go back to the start, introduce the chief again and the rings and the covenant, but ditch all the confusing stuff, tidy it up. Take all the best design from what's come before, all the best bits of gameplay, add a renewed focus on the AI of the encounters, try and recreate the awe and mystery of the first game. Give it as much polish as possible and make it a proper next gen game, no multiplatform bs.

I thought infinite's campaign was good fun for the most part. Don't get me wrong the gunplay was great but i would struggle to remember a specific mission like i could with 1,2 and 3. Which is the problem with the 343 games, no one really speaks about any memorable missions they've made.

It's the open world that does it, you rarely get good set pieces in open world games compared to more linear games. Outlaws had the same issue where everything is on one level so you get to the end and 2 weeks later you remember fuck all about it.

Not-Cortana was just from the school of shitty marvel quip unfunny cringe/humour
Halo wars was great RTS for console, with HW2: MS forced the devs to have MTX cards for units for one of the modes. They fixed it up, so you get more cards for blitz mode (although it was not a great mode)

I couldn’t describe the ending to Halo Infinite with a gun to my head.
All I can really remember is wandering around the big map triggering the same spawns and then being trapped in a small metal corridor every time they wanted to move the story on. They had an entire Destiny to steal from and still absolutely fucked it.

I really enjoyed the gameplay in 4, 5, and Infinite. The actual mechanics of moving around and shooting still felt sufficiently Halo. But all of them have their weaknesses; I couldn't tell you what the actual story was meant to be with the Didact and all that, or what happened to Cortana when she went crAIzy. Like others have said, it's not as if the story was some deep epic on the human condition, but 1-3 made a sort of sci-fi sense.
Infinite's big problem, as a single player game, was that the boss fights were all in tiny locations that cut the legs off the game's biggest strength: the beautiful open world and excellent enemy encounters. I just got the sense that they'd had to cut a million corners when they were making it, which is a tragedy considering the time and money involved.
Anyway, I remain cautiously optimistic, and I am inclined to think that doing a full-on remake-reboot of the whole shebang might be in everyone's best interest at this point. Plus it would mean the PlayStation players wouldn't have missed out on any story.

I'd disagree. The existence of the open world cut the legs off boss encounters and the mission design in general. It didn't add anything to the game and seeing the same landscape and then underground forerunner installations was visually tiresome the 5th time you had to go through them. I wouldn't even say the open world was beautiful tbh. It just existed because going by the reports of behind the scenes issues they didn't know what the fuck to do with it. I do not have any confidence in 343 in the slightest.
