Some inbuilt Intel malarkey I've been looking at a gt 710 or 740 2gb for about 30 smackers Parts list so far 8gb ram - £18 SSD 120gb - £13 Sata power splitter wire - £5 Wifi usb thingy - £4 Keyboard /mouse - £10 Sell 4gb ram - £(10) Pc and monitor - free Gpu - £30 Total - £70 for a 720p 30fps beast It's a real shame what's happened. A used GT1030 or Rx550 should be £50 or less and would be an absolutely huge step up but they are a bad price now, even used. And it just gets disproportionately worse as you go up through the quality level.

I saw that, my goto gpu used to be 750ti or 1050ti...both of those are now upwards of £150!
I remember trading those for around £75 3 or 4 years ago 😭

SSD installed.. Had to fiddle around and swap over Sata cables with the hdd as the ssd wouldn't appear in the boot sequence.
Windows load times: Original - 1m 10 With 8gb ram instead of 4gb - 40secs From ssd - 25 seconds
Not bad!
The gt 710 I looking at went for £40 😮...so going to have to wait.

Not having much luck on GPU's so have expanded my search
I have found a gt 710 1gb which is DDR5 instead of the 710 2gb or 740 2gb which are DDR3.
Is it better to go for the higher DDR at the expense of lower vram?

Ok, I just noticed another effect of the shortage crisis: it's apparently become impossible to find a GPU cooler.
I'm looking for a better cooler for my 480, and there's nothing at all available, at least among famous brands. Not even on Arctic's website I could find anything. Everything is out of stock.
Worse, if I go on ebay, all I find is auctions for "cooler replacement parts for mining cards". Not exactly encouraging.

Managed to make my 3080 produce coil whine the other day. Thought it had developed a problem at first, which would obviously have been a disaster, but I was playing the original F.E.A.R. and it seems it was just trying to pump out like a million fps, despite me having 'just' a 120hz screen. Turning on v-sync fixed it straight away, but it was interesting to see it happen. First time I've heard it too, in maybe 8 or so years PC gaming? What an annoying noise, lol

PC All done guys
Think i was optimistic that the Gt710 cuold hit 1080p (even on low settings :/) but for 720p gaming I'm getting 30 fps on Rocket League & Fortnight etc
Final Bill:
PC & Monitor - Free GT 710 2gb - £33 8GB RAM - £18 Wireless USB do da - £3 Kb/Mouse - £6 Speakers - £4 SSD 120gb - £13 Sata power splitter wire - £5 Sell 4gb Ram - £(10)
Total - £72

Hi all
(Attempting) to fix a computer for a friend
He has a aerocool gt case
The front panel IO needs replacing as the USB wire is shredded and the headphone socket is loose.
Question is how do i get a replacement wire which will fit the case I have?
Also one of the front panels is missing (blanking plates?). How do I get a replacement which will fit the case?

A 3440x1440 OLED is coming! My word have I been waiting for these. I've got a pretty recent alienware 3440x1440 LCD screen. It's lovely. I'd be tempted to upgrade already though, this was always intended to be a stop gap. Perhaps better to wait for the second gen though... and wonder why it's only HDR 400? Bit odd. Well, if it's a fortune, probably makes sense to hold on another year... if it reviews well though, oh baby, actual black levels here I come. wccftech.com/alienware-launches-34-inch-curved-qd-oled-the-worlds-first-quantum-dot-oled-gaming-monitor/

That's not just OLED it's Quantum Dot OLED... Brighter than OLED and with supposed amazeballs viewing angles and better blues/colour accuracy.
I expect it will be very expensive. The first QD OLED coming thru is expected to be like $10k (early guestimates...).

Lol at the power draw for the 3090TI. The 4000 series is going to be ridiculous if Nvidia keep going down the route of just pumping more juice into their cards.

I think I'm going monitor blind trying to find a decent ultrawide with gsync, high refresh and HDR.
LG ultragear 38gn950 or 34GP950G I thought would be the one for me but it's only hdr600 and Linus put his tech tips all over this and said the dimming was a bit shit. He actually went back to the one I spent ages drooling over, the Asus pg35vq. This one seems to have be price-hiked into orbit and now is around £3k
I started looking at 4k monitors instead and again the hdr1000 ones are stupid money. At this point it's cheaper to get an LG c1 but this is shit as an actual monitor.
Anybody else shopping around for a new monitor? What you after? What's your budget?

HDR 600 is pretty damned good for a PC Monitor. Most HDR PC Monitors only do 400. 1000 is probably absurdly bright for the normal PC viewing distance.

The monitor market has been shite for years now whether that's awful quality control or gener advancements in tech. HDR on monitors is pretty pointless because of the viewing distance.

Long story short, there's no monitor which meets your requirements right now. PG35VQ is VA so that'll have black smearing all over, which you should see in person before you work out whether you can tolerate it.
Might be worth waiting and seeing what the Dell AW3423DW will be like if you absolutely must have HDR (albeit at massive cost, 3k will be the absolute minimum on that one if you can get it at all as it'll certainly be in extremely short supply), otherwise I'd just leave it for this time around, concentrate on getting a decently fast and clear screen in the size that's best for you.
On the 34GP950G you might want to double check and see whether the G-sync Ultimate monitor doesn't make any noise as in other monitors it's actively cooled. I don't think the 38 has the module so you should be clear there. I briefly had the USB-C equivalent with the same panel before I had to send it back twice for dead pixels and it was nice and fast with no noise I noticed but it did lack an SRGB mode so that might be frustrating on the desktop to have oversaturated colours. It was great for work though, massive desktop!
If you're not going to use it for desktop work at all then consider the LG C2 as that now comes in 42 inches. The main drawbacks you'll find will likely be the automatic brightness limiter and the WRGB subpixel layout, both of which are most noticeable on the desktop. There are a few monitors announced at CES which use that same panel but I think you'll run into the same issues as it's a panel limitation, not a processor one. The Alienware's Samsung OLED panel apparently has better brightness due to the true RGB pixel layout and a three year burn-in warranty so it should sidestep those issues but Samsung are also the people who came up with 'QLED' so we'll see how fraudulent or otherwise it is when reviews appear.
I went through a few months hunting for a new monitor last year (one of mine is starting to get worse with image retention and the other's being quite grumpy on starting up) and I ended up buying and returning three monitors, all around the £1000 mark, for stuck pixels. Hopefully this year's new models will be better for it as at that price point I expect better.

On the subject of monitors, I started a new job recently and the office (100% hot desks) is full of ultrawide monitors, and a fair number of curved ultrawides too. I can't imagine they're very high spec (a smattering of LG and Samsung screens) but boy oh BOY are they amazing for development work. I can't believe I'd put off trying one until it was thrust upon me.
So now, I must own one for home (and have a contribution of £400 from work to kickstart it). Realistically I'm going to game on it at some point, but 95% of the time it's gonna be Xcode on one half and VSCode on the other.
Anyone got any particular picks for that kinda use case?

I've had an Alienware 38" 3840x1600 144Hz@8Bit/120Hz@10bit with Gsync ultimate screen for almost a year now and I don't have a bad word to say about it. It's this screen here. Well worth the money in my opinion

That link took me to laptops, but I'm hoping you're pointing towards the Alienware I think I've just settled upon ... AW3821DW

In terms of pixel response it's a little slower than the GN950, and it does have the G-sync ultimate chip in so expect some degree of fan noise, depending on how sensitive you are to it. It also lacks an SRGB mode, but the Dell panel warranty does cover stuck pixels which is very good. In terms of pricing it was hovering around 1100 in the last lot of sales and I'm sure it'll come down again some time soon. I nearly pulled the trigger on it a few times myself.

I could of course dialed stuff down and it would've been fine but I didn't want to do that. I now have a RTX 3090 (or as I like to call it 'the 3080 Mugs Edition) delivering the pixels to it

Basically since it's 4K with the top and bottom chopped off you can expect similar performance.

She's a right prick when you're playing games and she is either attacking the mouse cable or jumping in front of the screen.
Probably a solid argument to get another wireless mouse!

Bios updates are not something I normally do because I hate the idea of bricking my hardware however I want this resizable BAR thing and just realised it's not enabled because I'm still on version 00 of my mboard bios when version 80 is out.
It's taking fucking ages to do as well.
