So... I may one day build a PC.
Any recommendations on resources?
I mainly just watch youtube and make notes these days. Then when I return to the idea of building a PC its out of date.

I'm about to buy my first ever gaming PC and I really need some hlep figuring it all out.
Some basic questions I need help with I've decided to go with a Ryzen, but how important is it to get the latest version? Isn't it better to save a bit on the processor, and put that money towards a better graphics card?
Speaking of graphics cards. Radeon or GeForce? I'm leaning towards Radeon but only because GeFOrce feels a bit old. I'm also thinking the higher the number, and the more letters after it, the better the processor. Is that the case?

Just remember that the more lights your case has the faster Crysis will run.

Tbf with the money you'd save buying a weaker processor, you'd probably only be able to pony up the advance payment on the mortgage you currently need to buy any graphics card.

Are you buying a prebuilt or doing it yourself?
As said above GPUs are ridiculously expensive at the moment and still not totally easy to get, so I would settle on what you want and what kind of price you're willing to pay and only order the rest of the build when you have that secured. NVIDIA are the way to go these days (sorry Malek!), so it's just a case of looking at which 30xx card will fit your budget (like you say bigger number is better)
Then for processor just go AMD and if you're not overclocking don't worry about expensive motherboards too much. Previous gen will be absolutely fine if you can find a bargain. I'd recommend sticking to a 6 core 12 thread model (3600) as a bare minimum, again depending on budget go for a higher core count.
Obviously plenty more to consider if you're DIY (which form factor, case, PSU, memory, storage, peripherals, monitor)

Thanks for the pointers.
I'm buying a prebuilt. Which is rather amusing since they all have glowing LED logos and stuff. There's a very distinct gamer look, and I think it's equal parts ugly and hilarious.
But, beggars can't be choosers.
By the way NVIDIA is the ... not GeForce one is it?

Nah, NVIDIA = geforce.

OK, good.
Edit: Having looked at a few prebuilt PCs it looks like I'll be able to find a decent one within my budget, and probably have money for a screen as well... Thanks for the quick intro wrt cores & threads.

My only advice is make sure you look carefully look at all the components. Prebuilt companies tend to chuck shit into certain in order to make a profit such as PSU, Motherboard and RAM. Also, make sure you check what GPU they are giving you because places like Dell put their own branded GPUsin (Alienware) which are dog shit.

Crap, my wife is getting involved and her thinking is that it would be better to split the budget in half and buy TWO PC's so that both the boys can play at once.
I'm thinking there must be a minimum required spend if you don't want to end u with what amounts to an LED infested GBA. My budget is at about 2100β¬ and I need to get a monitor for that as well

Monitors are not expensive, if you keep it to small ones without more expensive features like high refresh rate or curved display, etc.
For 1000 each, you could easily get something decent (nothing next-gen worthy of course, but something like a Ryzen 3600 and a Geforce 1660 Ti should be feasible).

I have never leave ked the idea of curved screens but haven't actually used one. I imagine they are a bit better in the PC space than with TVs which was a bad idea. Still on my cheapy flat 21:9 1080p 29" (IIRC) monitor.

Small curved monitors seem pointless but when something is so big it curves so it all faces you directly. Fov settings in games become a lot more important. I just have 3 27's but they all face me directly and ends up about 50 degree angle between each monitor.

I like the 2300R monitors. I suspect the Samsung style super curved 1000R ones might be a bit much but going from 34 to 38 at the gentler curve made a big difference in terms of being a really well tuned viewport - I can see a lot but I don't have to look around too much even when the monitor's quite close.

Not sure about prices in Sweden, or whatever country you live in, but you can get a dell g15, i5 and rtx 3050 for like Β£700 (UK) www.dell.com/en-uk/shop/gaming-and-games/dell-g15-gaming-laptop/spd/g-series-15-5510-laptop/cn55504Seems pretty reasonable for a mid range that should handle most things?

The trade off from running things at sparkle versus not having to endure and solve daily squabbling/fighting/whining/pitching of fits is well ducking worth it.

Running things at sparkle? As in not the highest setting? Or is that some streaming thing?
I can see the argument for buying two computers, or even two laptops. But I wan't something that I don't have to muck about with for some time. (Still a console boy at heart).
I also want to use it to do get into Blender and for the eldest to get started on Roblox development. Whomever isn't on the PC will have to settle for the PS4. The eldest child has been suffering Roblox on a Chromebook for years, while his younger sibling has been enjoying a smooth iPad version.

If you're desperate for GPU/CPU try Dell Outlet. I bought a couple of 5950x/RTX 3090 Alienware R10 systems there for about Β£3200 each. Re-shelled one into my old PC (so taking the CPU, GPU, M2 2TB SSD, 64GB of RAM and the HDD and putting it into a NZXT H710 that already had a 1000W PSU and X570 mobo from my old build.
The other one I've been replacing fans, stripping out everything I can to help with the noise and heat build-up, but ultimately I think it'll be simpler to re-shell it as well. The R10/R11/R12 Alienware cases are junk, IMO.
There's a R11 system there currently for Β£2178 with 32GB, 2TB M2, i9-10900F and RTX 3080.

After reading that mile long twitter thread about a DELL customer getting nothing but shit I'll not be using them for anything ever.

Looks like the Nvidia super range is on the horizon with 3090 first but it consumes 450 watts of power hahahaha.

I dread to think how much that'll cost... For anybody mental enough to get one I doubt a new PSU will matter much.

Keep you toasty warm in the winter. Nvidia are like old school AMD these days by just chucking more power into their cards. I know you can undervolt etc but it's just ridiculous.

It's cyclical I think, remember how ridiculously hot the GTX 480 got? It used more power than the dual-GPU board AMD made at the time!
As long as performance per watt keeps improving then we'll get to a point where 'good enough' for the current gen consoles will arrive at a lower spec, and once the pandemic effects subside then maybe there'll be a mid-range card market again. Until then it's just a case of overpaying for the top end and then undervolting it.

Seems my trusty 4690k has given up the ghost.
Can't get a video signal from my pc, fans spin up but no POST. CPU LED is solid red which I believe indicates that's the problem. I did find half of the 8 pin CPU power connector had come unplugged but refitting that doesn't seem to have helped, wonder if that is what caused the problem somehow. It was running fine, then it stopped waking up from sleep and now this.
Tried removing everything, reseating components and power cables, resetting CMOS but nothing.
Anyone know where I can get a socket 1150 CPU at a reasonable price?
Alternatively may need a new mobo/CPU/ram. What would people recommend for reasonably cost conscious gaming right now? I'm running a 1070 and not looking to upgrade immediately but probably will if prices settle or I manage to snag a new Nvidia card at RRP.
