I have to upgrade too, but my problem is that I adamantly refuse to pay *anything* above RRP.
I guess I'll be upgrading in, like, four years? If I'm lucky.

I'm super lucky with my 3090. Looking at the prices I see now, the £1500 I paid looks like a bargain. Considering I then sold my RTX2080 for £550 the 3090 cost me £950 and I'm quite happy with that

Can’t believe the drought is still going on! I have a 3070 which I bought at launch for about £560. Strange to think I could still flip that for about £200 profit!

That's nothing, I can make a profit on a 1070 at the moment. That's crazy.

Yeah, I could realistically get one of those new GPUs for their inflated prices, and then make up the difference by selling my RX 480 for way more than what I paid back in 2016.
Unfortunately my card is not in so great a shape that I could sell it for such high prices and still be able to sleep at night.

I’ve slowly been building my first PC since 2007 (I’ve been using Macs since then). Finally stuck my fingers in my ears and bought the final bit today - a 3080Ti. Arrives on Tuesday. Can’t wait to see how it runs Earth 2150.
I need a decent ~27” 4K monitor (I’m replacing a 5K iMac so need a decent screen for video and photo editing… gaming is slightly secondary). Any recommendations? That Eve Spectrum looks like it ticks most of the boxes. Sadly my desk space is too small for the 48” LG OLED, otherwise I’d just get that…

Unfortunately my card is not in so great a shape that I could sell it for such high prices and still be able to sleep at night. I spent quite a bit contemplating selling my 3080 since the prices were stupid and then adding the difference to get a 3090. Eventually I decided I'd rather just have the card and actually get use from it than fuck about with all that stress again (took a few weeks to bag this). I can't see anything coming along that this can't handle especially since I don't game at 4k. I'm sure these will still hold a decent price when the next magical card (40x series) is released at which point I'll (try) and buy that and then sell this on

My 1080ti (Strix) had some stability issues which underclocking seemed to sort. I ended up putting the FE BIOS on it instead and it was absolutely rock solid since then. Like Malek I just wouldn't feel comfortable selling it with that in mind, so it's just been sitting around as a spare.

I've started using my GPU far below its max potential lately, in part because it seems to heat up very quickly (it's a reference so the cooling sucks), and the only other solution is setting the fan to near max speed, which is too loud for my tastes. But also because I'm getting paranoid about the fact that replacing it would be expensive. So I don't wanna stress the card if I can help it.
My GPU gets up to a max power consumption of about 110W in full load, as measured by the Crimson control panel, so I've been trying to always keep it below 85W. This includes running games below native res, or playing in Low settings even when I could afford to go higher.
I'm actually lucky that my monitor is still 1080p60hz. The new consoles are basically 10TF pieces, and they need to run games at near-4K. My 480 is around 6TF (probably more like 4.5TF when accounting for the less efficient architecture), so as long as I only need to go up to 1080p, I should be able to coast along for a while and still have some extra power budget to avoid stressing the card too much.

When you see videos comparing low settings to ultra there's usually fuck all difference. I remember the first far cry and it was night and day but low on cyberpunk with just textures set to high looks wonderful

I remember the first far cry and it was night and day but low on cyberpunk with just textures set to high looks wonderful That's actually a big problem for me because it means that decreasing the settings doesn't really help much. That said, there is always at least a few settings you can touch that make some difference. Shadows, for example.

Yeah shadows are usually a good setting to lower and I don't really notice a difference between a dark blob and a perfect representation of the object being cast

But if it's most going to be used for productivity over gaming, you may be happy with that

Literally the only downside to lowering graphical settings is just knowing you're not getting the best possible visuals (most of the time, anyway).

There's a real psychological element to that. I've put up with 20fps PS3 games content that that is as good as it's going to get.

Definitely. There's the want to max every setting out on PC, because if you didn't, why are you playing on PC? A console's more convenient.

A pc has so many games not released or possible on consoles in the past, mmo's and rts for me and a load I cant think of, nevermind the modding and other uses for a pc. Who cares if it doesnt get your pc friends hard, just being able to make use of one is a bonus over consoles.

I love the fact that instead of having generations, if you buy a game on steam that you can't run perfectly now, at some point in the future you'll be able to shit on it at a high framerate. I know that backwards compatibility is a prominent thing now but it's still shoehorned and clunky

Plus even with newer games they can add DLSS after launch and drastically change how it'll run.
Absolutely love revisiting older games that used to struggle on my old machine and just cranking everything up to 11.

I wish more pc games did the Forza thing where they'll dynamically change not only the resolution, but also the other settings. It's the only game I'll boot up, set everything to dynamic and just don't worry about it anymore. Easy to run too, those Turn 10 games.

Windows doesn't scale text at high resolutions as well as a Mac so I would consider a 34" 1440p one. It'll also get you more frames in games. There are some 32 inch 4K ones around but the panels just aren't really there at the moment. Supply for stuff isn't amazing at the moment but something like the LG 34GN850 on the higher end or Dell's S3422DWG on the lower end if you don't mind some black smearing in games. 38 inch ultrawides are very nice too, if you have the space - it's basically like having something like a 42" 4K display with the top and bottom lopped off. Dell's got one from last year called the AW3821DW which is native G-Sync and is likely to drop to around 1000 pounds for Black Friday.
edit: this is assuming you're not going to plug a console into it - Xboxes put out a 1440p signal happily enough but Playstations don't. Some monitors do take a 4K signal and sample it down but the ones I've seen look a bit sloppy with wobbly diagonals.

That does depend on when you buy your game though. At launch, everything's full price for the most part, and there's sales in the coming months on any platform.
But I didn't mean to say there's no reason at all to play games on PC, just that for those who have the choice of more than one platform, unless you're pushing the graphics above and beyond what's possible on your console, the easier choice is to go console.
Like the example Matt A mentioned of 20fps PS3 titles. In those days, as an example, I could've maxed Darksiders II at 1440p60 on my 670, or played it on PS3 at 720p25-ish.

Many thanks for the advice (and the person further up!). I’ll investigate ultrawides - my maximum width is about a metre though, and I really need 4K because most of my life is spent editing 4K videos and I like to see it in actual resolution, if that makes sense! Won’t be running consoles into it - the Series X and PS5 will (probably) stay in the lounge, and it seems no monitor would match my OLED’s HDR anywho. Honestly, I’m so excited to get back into PC gaming for so many reasons - revisiting some old classics and trying some of the new RTS remasters.

The 4k requirement does make things tougher. From looking online, 27 inch monitors are about 60cm wide apiece so unless you're willing to stack then a dual monitor setup's out. If you are then I'd have suggested a 34 or 38 underneath and a 27 on top for your picture feed but if you're in an alcove I'm also guessing that your desk's too shallow for that to be comfortable and you'd end up with a crick in your neck. If it's fairly deep though it might be worth looking at.
That leaves a few more options. There's the LG Ultrafine, which is a little old and only 27 inches, but it would let you have full frame 4k in your editing window with a minimal timeline/tools around your editor. Hard to drive in games though.
There are plenty of good 27 inch 4K monitors with higher refresh rates as this last year has seen some big advances; the LG 27GP950 is extremely hard to find but it's a great, fast panel. Rtings recommend the Dell S2721QS as a good 4K60 monitor for photo and video editing, though that doesn't have higher refresh rates. You might also want to look at something like the Gigabyte M32U; the response time's a little slower than I'd like but before I had to return its bigger brother the Aorus FI32U due to hot pixels I really liked the experience of 4K in a 32 inch monitor. With the high refresh rate it was very impressive and one advantage those 32 inch 4 panels have that might work for you is that a lot of them have quite a wide colour gamut.
The last option is to wait for the 42 inch LG OLEDs next year - a 43 inch monitor is about 96cm wide so it might be worth getting the tape measure out and checking. Or there's the Dell U4021QW which is the ultrawide 5K equivalent at about 95cm. All very expensive of course (except the quite reasonable S2721QS) but at the point you bought a 3080Ti I've assumed that unless it's completely insane (like those 32 inch pro OLED monitors) then you're not that sensitive on price.

As an owner of the AW3821DW I have to admit, I love it. Fantastic for gaming but not quite being 4K so it's not quite as punishing to run. It's also not as aggressively curved as the Samsung G9 so much so it almost feels flat. I was going to get a 48" LG CX but I didn't want to risk burn in on the screen even though it seems to be less of an issue with TVs of today. We do have a LG CX downstairs that if I want to I can connect my PC to but I'm now an ultrawide convert. Gato isn't a fan though. She can't block the entire screen any longer

I got an Acer Z35P on sale a couple of years ago and I love the Ultrawide form factor. For anyone else with one for the love of god get a monitor mount, it's so mujch tidier and gives you back a lot of space.
Having hooked up my PC to my LG C1 the colours are a bit dissapointing. Having bought the C1 and a 6900XT I won't be buying a new monitor for quite a while.
