I'll swap 'em once my fingertips have recovered.

I did the RAM dance. Good config with sticks in A2 and B2. Put new sticks in these two slots. Nope. Tried each stick in slot A2: nope. Wtf.
Oh I don’t understand this. As a last resort, I went into the BIOS and set the memory speed back to Auto. I had set it to the 3200Mhz the memory supports. It’s done the POST and I can see all the RAM 🥴 But I saw this last night. Let’s see in a couple of a reboots.

Don't set the speed manually. Memories should usually have a specific tuned XMP profile, as long as the mobo supports that speed it should be fine.
If you find trouble, you might need to update the BIOS first. Updated BIOS usually include improved memory management, especially for Ryzen chipset.

More specifically, you should set the XMP profile in the bios (on Auto it will just go at the slowest speed), but you shouldn't need to change anything else.

Sometimes setting memory timings manually can be more stable though. Or atleast on my X370 anyway.
Used the ram rated timings and as starting point then fiddle with the mhz. Generally don't bother to try and tighten the timings though as takes so much time to fine tune.

Hmm. I think I’ll leave the tinkering for a while. Enabled the first XMP profile and it refused to boot again. Even with the retry option enabled it didn’t do anything without intervention :/

I had some 3600mhz memory that would do that. It would work at 3400 so try clocking down a bit. The set was on the motherboard manufacturer’s support list at XMP speeds and everything, I think it was just being picky.

I've been gifted my mate's old PC (maybe 7 or 8 yrs old) and aside from brief time with a pre-built last year that didn't go too well before returning it, I've had Macs for the last 23 yrs or so, so I'm a little green.
I was wondering if there'd be any sort of inexpensive upgrade path for this PC to get a little more from it if anyone has any suggestions please.
It's currently opened up for a good cleaning and is comprised of:
Asus B85M-G Motherboard with Socket 1150. Intel Core i5 4690 3.5GHz with some sort of stock-looking round Intel cooler that has 4 plastic 90˚ rotating clamps. 16GB Crucial RAM (2x8GB DDR3 1600 UDIMM 240) - according to the Speccy app it shows them at 798MHz (11-11-11-28). I'm not sure if these timings push it higher than that or if that's as fast as they run (I assume from their name they go up to 1600MHz). VTX X-Edition AMD Radeon R7 265 2048MB with a lovely red fan shroud that's turned sticky to the touch, yum. 128GB Evo 840 SSD / 1TB Seagate HDD Zalman Z3 Plus Case - 1 Front Fan. 1 Back Fan, 2 Roof Fans (All 120mm) PSU - FSP500-60HHN - Max Wattage 123W, Total Output Continuous 500W (does that mean it's a 500W PSU?)
Is there much to be done here on the cheap? If not, I'm happy to use as is (assuming it starts after my cleaning).

GPU would probably be my first thing to tackle, but it's really not a good time for finding bargains with those still.
Maybe CPU if you can find a cheap 4th gen i7 anywhere (but then you'd probably want to add an aftermarket cooler as well as the stock Intel ones are awful)
And yeah, sounds like a 500W PSU, so you don't want to go too crazy GPU-wise.

Thanks for that. I'll try to keep an eye out for an i7 4th Gen and have a look into what sort of cooler might be suitable (assume a Noctua is going be £60 or so).
I was wondering if a GTX 1060 or even a 1660Ti might be alright after having a little look online, but I'm not sure I want to spend too much at this point if the prices are still silly - I'd rather stubbornly wait it out. If I find myself using it a lot I might be happy to upgrade bits if they're not too pricey though.
I did see an RTX 3080 for 2 grand in the window of a CEX the other day :/

Any recommendations for the best way to move my Windows boot drive to a new SSD?
I'm currently running it off a (very old) 128gb one and occasionally having problems with it getting full. I've got a newer 1tb drive in there but Windows doesn't seem to have an obvious way to just shift everything across - it looks like I need a 3rd party utility but they all have a slight whiff of dodginess about them.

Yeah, macrium reflect free. I'd personally use it to create a bootable USB and use that to do the cloning rather than from within Windows.
Or just do a nice clean install.

Help me FG gurus, you're my only hope!
The PC my friend passed on to me has been fine for a week since I cleaned it and repasted the CPU and Graphics Card. I've been gradually installing more apps and games since then (they're all legit and paid for, so no dodgy ones). Yesterday I installed a driver for a USB Ugreen bluetooth dongle and later on tried to get my old printer working (Epson C62). Windows couldn't find a driver automatically so I ended up installing the last one available on the Epson site (a Win XP-labelled version). Eventually I got the printer working so I figured all was good.
Later on I played some games of Rocket League and Children of Morta and noticed so slight graphical glitches - during kick-off in RL the colours flickered briefly, possibly inverting. It only seemed to occur during the kick off phase. I also noticed this colour change flicker (or something similar) in CoM when selecting/deselecting the vsync option, but other than that the games ran fine. RL was fine after a couple of restarts too - the flickering didn't return.
I put the PC to sleep to get a drink then on awaking got BSoD - Device ran into a problem and needs to restart, with an error of: Critical Process Died.
Automatic repair fails, reset this PC fails, can't even safe boot and seem to be in this blue screen loop. All I can seemingly do is access the BIOS and boot with the command line interface. Any suggestions for troubleshooting? I'm currently creating a bootable USB Win 10 install media on another computer to see if it might the SSD that's gone kaput (chkdsk /f reports it there though but I assume if it boots from the USB then maybe the SSD has failed). My other thought was if the GPU was playing up due the flickering colours briefly before.
I'd appreciate any suggestions if anyone has a moment. Cheers.
Edit: Don't think it's the graphics card, I get the same error starting up with the iGPU in use and power disconnected from the card.

You may end up wiping it a couple of times and finding the fault yourself, install it all again in stages and you may find what messes it up, I have had to split my pc onto 2 windows installs just to keep my simracing stuff running at its best, thats with modern components as well.

A fresh install from a bootable USB stick seems to have done the job (I hope) Do you have each install on separate drives or did you partition?

Yeah, sounds like I shouldn't even bother.

I ended up buying a prebuilt for the first time ever as gpu prices are sky high, bought a system from scan that saved me £300 doing my own build.

It's honestly a pretty sensible choice these days. Helps if you know everything that's going into it, as they can cheap out on a lot of the parts (literally anything that's not front and centre in the specs like a CPU and and GPU are)

I mean, to be fair, a 3090 is insane even at retail prices. 3070's the way to go, if you can find a good deal.

Even those are nearly a grand. Might as well go pre built or try out Geforce Now for a while.
