I banned myself from playing Minecraft for a couple of years, but took a look recently in anticipation of the major mountains / land overhaul they are meant to be doing at the end of this year with “Caves and Cliffs”.
The seed I tried on Bedrock (“aubergine”) had pretty good mountains already and there’s new stuff in The Nether that’s… okay I guess. I wound up having more fun than expected mucking around with Bees. Save yourself some hassle and don’t bother looking for them, you can spawn a beehive by planting trees with a flower within a block or two. You might have to plant dozens of trees, but the worst that could happen is you wind up with lots of wood. After that, you need silk touch if you want to move the hive, and you HAVE TO put a campfire a few blocks below the hive and smoke it before you interact with the hive in any way, or the bees will attack you and then die.
I wasted about two days of real life looking for a naturally spawned hive, and then immediately killed the bees by not smoking them, which neatly describes why I don’t let myself play minecraft in the first place. “Bedrock” edition auto saves constantly, so you can’t just revert to a save easily like you could with Console Edition.
Anyway, I brought myself up to date on the new features, but will now return to waiting for this major landscape overhaul they are working on.

I start a new world in Minecraft every couple of years, and every time it's the same pattern:
- Survival. Always survival. Everything built must be found in the environment - Check out the new craftable items / creatures / biomes / whatever - Make a door in the side of a hill and start mining diagonally downwards - Gradually transform hill-hovel into fully stocked underground workshop - Build a nice thing above ground (previous projects have included: massive glass pyramid, underwater base, minecart network) - Get bored, quit
The next outing will probably be when they add ray-tracing on console

According to TA I got my first achievement in Minecraft (Bedrock) on the 30th September 2017. Yesterday I entered the end and killed the dragon for the first time.

The next update looks ace. Once the end is updated it'll start looking 'whole' as opposed to the cobbled together half indie/ half AAA game. Although that is part of the charm.
Anyone got a realm or want to start/ join one?

Oof, I never saw that anyone responded to this.
They’ve added a new preview of the upcoming Caves and Cliffs land generation to the “Bedrock” version of the game, which you can check out by toggling the Caves and Cliffs “experimental” option when creating a world. It’s not complete and hopefully there’s more balancing to be done, I’m not sure I really like it. Rivers seem heaps better. Mountains are kind of ludicrous and dominating. Other biome types seem to have suffered, though maybe I just looked at bad seeds.
I’ve been playing on a legit version seed with a really great mountain generation and I’m madly exploring out a large consistent area of it so that the new update doesn’t make a mess of it.
I’ve also been considering looking at at least trialling Realms. If we can transfer a save game to it that would be a good incentive.

Other than looking nice from a distance I find the new mountains to be fairly pointless at the moment. The caves are fun to explore though.

I really want to get back into Minecraft but I can only play it modded and because there's been more frequent full fat releases mod development has slowed down so it's always several versions behind. The issue I have with vanilla is the lack of end game goals besides just building and the vanilla building is pretty underwhelming. I want to build a factory and like go to space and whatever.
Some of the best mod packs in the past: TerraFirmaPunk - TerraFirmCraft entirely redid the survival aspects and resource crafting and the TFPunk modpack expanded it with steam and low tech industry. Twilight Forest + Thaumcraft - Turned the game into a magical fantasy exploration. InfiTech - Built around the nails hard technological progression of GregTech it really takes dedication but has oodles of depth.
As standalone mods I personally can't play without Dynamic Lights (a torch will light a radius around you when you hold it in your hand, like, how is this not in vanilla?), Smart Moving (grab ledges, crawl in low places!) and some kind of tree felling mod (my immersion cannot accept a tree staying floating when I chop the bottom block).

Those mods sound cool, shame there's no mod selector on the console version like the ones for Skyrim and Fallout 4.
I quite like the floating tree trunks, but I'd take a mod that immediately clears out all the leaves once you've harvested all the log blocks.

Optifine does dynamic lights which is great. Trees staying afloat is strange, but not stranger than any other block staying afloat. There's a datapack that gives axes the ability to break an entire tree, including leaves, in one go, but I'd have to look it up to know what it's called. Anyway, I'm also going to take this opportunity to shill for the texture pack I've worked on, the Dokucraft continuation project. It's a community-supported update of the old Dokucraft texture pack, which gives Minecraft a classic-Zelda-inspired look. After using it for years, vanilla Minecraft textures just make me sick, so I help keep it up-to-date for the latest version. Chances are that the mods you're using will have matching Dokucraft textures too, so I highly recommend giving it a shot. You can even add your own customizations from the Dokustash texture repository! It also has a ton of features enabled by Optifine, such as connected textures (like seamless glass and logs), item stack textures, custom mob models, and a really cool skybox. Optifine is another thing that I've become too spoiled by to do without. It started life as a performance optimizer but the developer added tons of features over the years, so it makes the game look vastly richer and more interesting.

Mods were a bit much for me. I ever I think ever finished any project I started in vanilla console Minecraft. Someone tried getting me into modded PC version with all these extra technical shit in it and I was like, nooo, did my head in immediately.
By “project” I don’t mean building a house or something, I mean stuff like a battle arena with moving walls, traps, equipment distribution system and ways of earning useful items, all built in vanilla survival. There’s a reason people don’t build adventure maps in survival mode, but I find creative mode instantly boring.

Back when I first started playing Minecraft I built a huge castle that slowly and naturally grew around a little hill where I had built my initial house. Burrowed down from within the house and put a storage room down at ground level. I eventually planted a little forest on the coast down below the hill and later added a grain field. The house soon got a small tower on one end which then grew into a higher double tower and of course I was adding walls, walkways and tunnels constantly. This just kept escalating and I eventually built a silly glass house at the bottom of the ocean which was connected to the coast with two tunnels made from glass. I also had a mining outpost farther away which was connected to the underground network. That's always one of the most enjoyable things for me: Being able to get around safely by way of self-built paths.

Played the Beta donkey's years ago and somehow lost all trace of my old account and didn't sign up again until last year. I tend to just go exploring and build up a ton of inventory in chests along my way and then get pushed into lava by a drop-zombie or skeleton in a ravine just as i decide to go back. One day i'll do a proper search for all my little stashes of chests/crafting tables and furnaces i have strewn about my world.
I've just upgraded my world to 1.17 as i've grown quite attached to it even though there's not much there aside from my Home farm, my XP Trap-Tower and what i call "Chicken Lag Hill". Pretty much every egg i've collected from around my Home/Farm area was fired into a wooded hill behind the hole in the ground i call home. Now after months of this and going from 1.15 to 1.17 i have a shit-ton of chickens behind my farm.
I recently started to use Xaero's Minimap and the hill is just a mess of yellow blobs, EDF Radar Stylie and due to all the cows, sheep, chickens and wild chickens i have in my home area near spawn my framerate goes from 140+ down to and fluctuates around 28-45 fps. The noise also makes you want to just go lie down after a while too. I don't go back very often.
I started messing about with huge Pixel-Art structures using commandblock imports but they made the lag so bad i deleted them. Currently using Forge, Optifine, Xaero's Minimap, a gravestone mod and some Command Geek datapacks for a couple of items i like to use. Switching between TeaShader, Complementary and MakeUp UltraFast shaders and trying out a couple of others to see if i like them.
Tried some mods like a StarWars one that got way too complicated for me way too quickly, Terra Swoop force which is great and an Adventure on i forget the name of which kept me entertained for a week or so. Which was nice.
For me Minecraft is a good podcast/stream game so i just pootle around exploring and things in Survival.
Quite fancy a couple of days playing Cube World now though, ha.

I've always felt that having to scramble for your dropped items after death in an attempt to beeat the despawn timer is the worst part of Minecraft, which is the reason I tend to play on either hardcore mode or on survival with keepinventory on. However, the idea of going on a desperate quest to recover the things you dropped in a deep, dark cavern or a distant jungle with only a faint inkling of where you should be looking does appeal to me, so a gravestone mod that takes away the time pressure (and risk of zombie theft) would be great.

If anyone is using Java Edition, how do you deal with the fact that almost every mod requires a different version of Minecraft?
I'm using AT Launcher, which is pretty handy overall, but the problem is that every time my kids want a new mod (which is about once a day) I need to install a new instance of Minecraft because that mod will only work with version 1.3.whatever.45.66.333223.crap. Which leads to about 100 instances of minecraft and me getting annoyed.
It seems like minecraft gets updated at a rate that's too fast for most modders to keep up, so you end up with millions of great but abandoned mods.
It doesn't help that one of our pcs is so low level that there's no chance of it running Minecraft without Fabric.. and that seems to further limit the potential mods available.

I've heard that MultiMC is good. The writer was recently working with Mojang on Minecraft itself so it's a trusted tool too and ( probably ) won't steal your account. There's probably other tools too but MultiMC is the one i see people talk about the most. MultiMC Home
I also used Technic and GDLaunchers but haven't used them for 6 months at least as i'm back on Vanilla.
GDLauncher Home
I only hit that issue with moving to 1.17. I install the mods i want ( Optifine, Forge etc ) then just create a new installation of that version of MC using the Launcher and point it to a new folder, run it up so the file structure is created then copy my existing world into it, then copy whatever mods are required for that version. I'm quite basic so i only really needed to do this for 1.16 & 1.17 until i found a website that converts datapacks which meant i could use my old 1.16 datapack. I'm now fully 1.17. The big mods tend to keep using specific older versions of MC as it's too much work to change them to the new API/SDKs especially those that use hundreds of mods as their base. I'm a basic bitch so Optifine and some datapacks were the only things i'd changed until the other week when i had to use Forge to run a Gravestone mod.

I need one version for Pixelmon, a different one for whatever that Superhero mod is called, another for whatever that starwars mod is called, another for the Dinosaur mod, another for the one-block map, another for the parkour maps, another for the dropper maps, etc...
Oh, and another for actually playing bloomin Minecraft! *head explodes*

I don't think I've looked at the game in years, but keep thinking I should.

I was hoping that there might be something like MCMMO available for the console Minecraft now, but it doesn’t look like it. I really enjoyed a server I found on Java years ago, where I could set up a shop and sell materials, enchanted goods etc. The server doesn’t exist anymore. Bit tempted to get Minecraft on my PC again but I generally prefer all gaming on console.

I thought I’d try Realms out via the free trial and, well shit. The draw distance is halved over normal play, it’s terrible. I’m not sure it wasn’t better on x-box 360.

Anyone played Dungeons?
Kids roped us into it and it's kind of like Minecraft: Dark Souls Way more fun than I was expecting.

I started a new Minecraft world recently to fuck around with the new things. I'll probably do what I always do which is explore a lot and make a big map room while forgetting about stuff like Dragons or what not.
