Gears Tactics is a pretty fun Xcom-like. The play style is a lot more aggressive (than Enemy Unknown at least), but it's got most of the well-worn concepts like overwatch and such. No base building though.

I was always pretty good at the tactical play in X-Com on the 360 but being bad at the resource management, research and base building side always meant that I ended up getting totally out levelled by the aliens and just had no way to compete when the zombie making ones start showing up.

Yeah, one thing the new Xcoms don't really tell you is which things on the strategy layer you should prioritise. Like, for example, how important satellites are in the first game. Or getting magnetic weapons ASAP in the second game.
I'd just look up a recommended build order for stuff tbh.

I was tempted by this as I do love Marvel and the first Xcom reboot but everytime I see footage, no matter how positive the person is speaking about it is, it just never looks good. I think I might save some money and just finally try Xcom 2 instead.

Thanks, all.
Unfortunately for me, many classics of the genre seem to be unavailable on PS4/5!

Chaos Gate Daemonhunters is very good and simplifies some of the fiddliness of XCOM.

I was kinda looking forward to this, but some of the stuff in the Skill-up review was just brutal. "Blade runs the book group and would like to be friends with Captain America - Cap reciprocates these feelings but doesn't know to talk to Blade. He needs your help to navigate these tricky social minefields. Later on, it's time to go birdwatching with Wolverine."

Valkyria Chronicles
The Shadowrun Trilogy is also a bit of an XCOM-lite.

Fuck it, just grabbed a cheap key.
It was the comment above about birdwatching with Wolverine that tipped me over the edge.

Sounds a bit too much like an interactive movie for me.

I know deck building is all the rage these days but what would be so wrong if this had been closer to X-Com or even Ultimate Alliance/X-Men Legends Just watched gameranx's Before You Buy video.. I was going to make a Fire Emblem Three Houses comparison, but X-Men Legends is a good call. Particularly the first one, where you played a new mutant at Xavier's mansion/school. Although the card mechanic is the only thing that makes me wary as I've not played a console game where card decks have improved playability or enjoyment.

I played the shit out of the both Legends and first two Alliance games. They were so much fun and had so much comics lore in them. Until PS Spiderman they were probably my favourite superhero titles.

There’s a nice game in here but Jesus fuck does it do everything in its power to prevent you from actually playing it. 3 hours in and I’ve played five battles, three of them basically instant win tutorials that are over in about five minutes. The rest of the time is absolutely risible dialogue and cutscenes that vaguely illustrates some side activity or collectable. Give me a team, give me a bunch of missions to go on, and leave me the fuck alone.

I’ve put in quite a bit of time since yesterday and it does open up with a lot more battles, probably not far from where you are grem.
I’m finding it incredibly addictive, the combat sections are surprisingly great and I don’t actively hate the inbetween bits…some of them, not all

Upgrading / crafting does seem like it’s going to need a shit load of grinding though.

Does Iron Man stop becoming such an unlikeable try hard prick at any point?

I am probably 3/4 of the way through this and enjoying it. The story is fun, and very Marvel, and the battles are a lot of fun (they are basically similar to Slay the Spire, with the need to unlock new cards and the synergies between them).
I would agree that the bits in between the battles can get a bit tedious though. The banter with the characters is great (Iron Man, Spider-Man and Wolverine’s voice actors all absolutely nail it) but the balance between the non-battle and battle stuff is a bit off.
I’ll definitely finish it but I can’t see myself having a second go-round.

Heh, I'm on a Steam Deck and I guess I been wandering about the house and leaving it on, say 30+ of actually playing it.
