My little brother fought in Iraq and Afghanistan and we’ve got friends who were injured out there and ultimately both missions feel like they’ve essentially fallen apart for little real gain

There aren’t many conflicts of the last 60 years where there’s been any real gain (excluding getting rich from them). This one is one of the biggest wastes of people’s lives and resources for that though.

I saw a few takes on Twitter saying "this is all Trump's fault, he agreed to it months ago" but surely Biden could have undone that? Otherwise what's the point of being the president?
I reckon Biden wanted to get out, saw an opportunity to do it quickly while blaming his predecessor for the consequences, and took it. But yeah, desperate people falling from plane wheels, or being executed in the street, isn't the look he was going for.

Hard to say whether it would have better or worse, it seems unlikely they were ever going to ‘fix’ Afghanistan.

Its kind of no surprise that we wouldn’t get everyone at risk out even before things went to immediate shit. I don’t know if we even managed it with Iraq and that was a lengthy broadly peaceful withdrawal.

It’s a place that will always be a law unto itself and multiple complex factors make it what it is. History has sadly been repeated and the loss of life is tragic.
