The issue isnt so much that you play shit teams in qualifying, its expanding the competition so that they start making it into the finals, making the group stages a bit of a procession. Exactly that. The Euros of old, with 16 teams were tough as nails. Even 24 was Rock hard. Daft expanding them. I also really dislike the best-placed third team bollocks. Should’ve kept it at 16. Likewise the new 48 team World Cup can fuck off. Should’ve kept it at 32 or expanded to 64. This three team group shit means you’ll see a whole bunch of Austria Germany 82 situations. |

It's as good a draw as we could have asked for really.
Wales are strong, but I fancy us to do well against them, if we give ourselves the chance that is against a beatable Ukraine team.
And there is always the chance Austria pull it off against Wales. Put another shrimp on the barbie!

Italy have not won a knockout game at the World Cup since they beat France in the final in 2006. In the same time span, Italy have won only one group match.
By the time World Cup 2026 rolls around it will be 20 years since they won a knockout match, and 12 years since they won ANY match at a World Cup.
