I think this is the first COVID film release that I will be sad about not going to the cinema to see. Hope it turns out well regardless even if I have to watch it on the comparatively teeny 42" home TV months later...

Just bought the book to re-read, think I read it back at school but can hardly remember any of the store. Going to try and finish it prior to the film launch. Been a big fan of Denis Villeneuve since seeing Polytechnique when it first came out. Hasn't made a bad or average film since.

No, he has a stunningly good batting average. The only film of his that I think is genuinely wobbly is Incendies, and that's only because the twist is so ridiculously far-fetched (and so miserable it almost verges on self-parody).

Words cannot describe how much I loved his blade runner. So excited for this Same, I've seen it about 10 times, it's absolutely stunning. I don't know shit about the book or the other cinema/tv versions of Dune but I'm really excited to see this one.

Its something I've always had a desire to get invested in but never got round to it. This could be the final kick up the arse I need.

Booked tickets for sunday 19 sept \o/
And yes, part two depends on how well this performs so... 35% chance of it being made. I only liked the first third of the book anyway. But Denis Villnöf and sci-fi... could watch that once or twice a year for the rest of my life.

It’s also on HBO MAX same day as the cinema release. It’s sadly going to flop and we’ll never see part 2.

Given how well the latest Marvel film did despite being a new character for the cinematic universe, I'm feeling cautiously optimistic about this one doing well. Same day streaming will probably gut its ticket sales though.
Fingers crossed anyway. I'll hopefully make my first trip to the cinema in a couple of years to see it anyway.

The fact that this is getting near-universal praise gives me hope that it'll be in Oscar conversations, which will help make WB pony up for Part 2 even if it's BO doesn't set the world alight.
I think it looks incredible and I can't wait to see it, but I do wonder just how much appeal it has to people who aren't massive sci-fi or film nerds. I worry it'll just look like any old space film, like another John Carter or Jupiter Ascending or whatever. Hopefully the ecstatic reviews will persuade some people to check it out.

John Carter not getting sequels made me have a saddie. It's a grand old-fashioned fantasy epic, with a few minor quibbles.
It helps that I grew up reading Edgar Rice Burroughs and it was precisely reading stuff like that that was my gateway drug into Frank Herbert and Roger Zelazny.

People have now seen this at TIFF. And...
It’s incredible. Have seen one critic from /Film complaining about the sound mix.
