Part 2 officially given the green light. The tweet has a massive spoiler for the last line of dialogue in Part 1!!!
OK, it's not really a spoiler.
Glad to see it confirmed.

If they get through to God Emperor I'm really curious how they're going to CGI a human/worm hybrid without making him look like either a massive penis or Jabba the Hutt

At what point do the books go shit? I meant to read the first early in the year but am going through it now. I like the first 3. One is the highlight, 2 is okay. 3 is... a bit boring but some amazing ideas, world building and philosophy. I recomend those three then never ever ever touch the ones after.

The first four are, basically, the atreides story and four pays off the first three really nicely. Its self contained so you aren't missing anything if you leave it there.

I didn't get very far into the second one. When I tried to give it back to the person I borrowed it from they refused and told me that I was stuck with it.
I should give it another shot really.
As for the film they pushed the release here back to December, fuckers.

I did the 6 when I got into it after the Children of Dune miniseries. Bad times. I thought the last two were a slog.

I’d say a trilogy of Dune and Dune Messiah would work pretty well. Though tbh you’re already going off the deep end with the second book.

Glad they're getting part 2, the first one's ending would have been even more of a wet fart if nothing had come after it.

What's the consensus on the best version of the Lynch film? Is it the Redux one on YouTube?

Spice diver redux is definitely worth a watch. But I wouldn't expect it to solve the problems of the film. I think (though my memory of the original cut is hazy) it slows the pacing earlier on to squeeze the additional scenes in which makes the 10 minute end montage and wrap up seem even more out of place.

The spicediver cut does add quite a bit to the middle section for more hot Fremen action: the Jamis knifefight, the little makers being drowned, more Stilgar. It fleshes it out a bit.
My problem with it is he removes some stuff just out of personal preference, which fucks me off.

I think the latest version has the removed bits put back in as you weren't the only one who was "somewhat agitated"

For all the redux adds, it still misses stuff from the TV version, and messes up the flow of the original too. Didn't work for me either I'm afraid.
And despite not enjoying part 1, even I'm happy at the chance for redemption in part 2 being confirmed. Might be more enjoyable as a whole endeavour. Better hope Villeneuve has a good ending planned between open/closed in case part 3 becomes an issue though.

Apparently Villeneuve filmed things like the Arrakeen banquet with the water merchants etc which would have fleshed out the background flavour somewhat, but he dropped everything he thought was superfluous to what he thought the main heart of the film was, ie Paul and Jessica, so gone.
He won't do a director's cut either, as he had final cut pretty much, so the theatrical version is his director's cut.

However I'm gonna give him the leeway here in the same way I gave Spielberg the leeway with Jurassic Park. I like the book at lot more than the film. But packing it full of backstory, techno babble and philosophising would probably have made it impenetrable, or least ways less watchable.

The opening credit as the film begins says Dune Part 1 so it was never going to be an ending. Anyway I just saw it and I thought it was bloody great and a must see film

Ha! I am not surprised. Went to watch it again in Bradford. The screen was excellent but when you aren't wowed as much by the visuals you realise there is basically no dialogue. And for a book so rich in lore and great dialogue, it really started to annoy me. So much of the subtleties are missing as little plot and character points aren't there.

Anyway I just saw it and I thought it was bloody great and a must see film I guess my feeling is that other films with multiple parts, still manage to be self-contained to an extent. This just felt like half a movie, without much of a climax or anything. Or a cliffhanger to get people psyched for the conclusion. Anyway, it's a lot better now that we know part 2 is coming. And I did think it was (mostly) great; it's just weird that part 2 wasn't approved from the get-go.

I'd have ended it after Paul and Jessica escape the worm, before they meet the Fremen, and have Paul shouting at the skies THE SLEEPER MUST AWAKEN or something rousing like that.
The escape from the worm is a big moment to end it on, and enough of a climax. I suppose they wanted some sort of intriguing note to end it on, so that's what we got.
Anyway, going to see it again this Friday as the showings are drying up very quickly around here and must support Dune, you know, all that.

Was it ever in doubt? The opening credit as the film begins says Dune Part 1 so it was never going to be an ending. Actually, yes, it was in doubt. The greenlight was only just publically announced and pretty much all the negative reviews have said that it is all set up for something we are unlikely to see. Supposedly, Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049 was a massive flop (personally loved it), and the studio wouldn't say yes to part 2 unless 1 delivered the numbers. I expect all the positive buzz helped their projections and was enough to make them say yes though. Just seen it this evening and it certainly is an epic. Very much designed for the big screen, so I would recommend anyone that feels safe to do so to go out and see it there. Don't think it is perfect though and I wouldn't rate it as good as Arrival or BR2049. I found it sagged a little post the attack sequence in the middle, but it is still an overall spectacular experience.

Yeah true. Would have been fine there and also a good 20 mins shorter. The meeting of the fremen Would have been a good way to start the next film. Could have interwoven some of the fremen lore into the knife fight.

How it rates against BR2049 is a tough one. Overall I think I liked it more but it’s hard to judge when I thought both were so top top notch.

The ending felt a little too mellow and something that would normally be in the middle of a thing (as it is in the middle(ish) of the book). But I can see why they chose to end it there as it completes Paul's first story arc and ends with definitely saying goodbye to his old life and going through a rebirth of sorts. A more cliffhanger-y ending would have been okay if we were getting the next part in a month, but given we'll be waiting a couple of years and it wasn't even a certainty that there would be a part 2, I don't mind that the movie came to a resting point of sorts at the end.

BR2049 lost a fucktonne of money, like disastrous, so it's a minor miracle that a) Villeneuve was given that sort of budget ever again - he acknowledges this in a lot of interviews and b) it was for Dune, of all things. It may have been a while since Dune 84 lost a pile but it's still notorious for being a flop.

BR2049 is basically the best film ever so tough to top that one. I hope this dawning Dune franchise does well enough that Villeneuve has carte blanche to deliver more Blade Runner. I can dream..

All that's required now is for the studios to greenlight Lynch (or Jodorowsky) to make God Emperor. They'd be *perfect* for that weird shit.
