What, no Perfect Dark thread? What is this place?! Anyway, the original N64 PD is one of my favourite games of all time (yes, moreso than GoldenEye, even) and I'm very excited to discuss the new version, even if I do feel it'll end up being Perfect Dark in name only. Anyone else excited? And what do we make of the news that they're teaming up with Crystal Dynamics (link to the old place for nostalgia's sake)? I like to imagine it's a prelude to Microsoft buying Square, but then I live for drama.

I would assume it's because the two heads of The Initiative were previously from Crystal Dynamics who worked on Avengers before jumping ship and tapped them up for assistance. I'm assuming at this point it might be a 3rd person game.

I'd assumed the same but I've seen the devs refer to it twice now as a first-person franchise so I think - hopefully - they're keeping it that way.

I'm excited by the news of a Perfect Dark game as well. I remember playing the original an inhuman amount of time, completing the single player on all three difficulties, finishing all the challenges and getting all of the stars for EVERYTHING!
Thought I could repeat that miracle on the XBLA version, but gaming has moved on and I could not relive my youth. The game itself now makes me sea-sick. And the challenges are just RIDICULOUS!
But I am looking forward to the new game. Even though I was very disappointed with Perfect Dark Zero.

Did the same, exhausted the game in all ways possible. There was one challenge with AR-34's that I still remember, but I'm not sure if that's because it was difficult or anything...
The one trick that they should bring back which has been missing is that higher difficulties give you more objectives to complete rather than giving the enemies more health/damage... I remember the underwater UFO mission in particular to be a lot longer on harder difficulties...

I fucking love the original. I wish I still had my 360, I would play through it again.

I was far too crap in 2000, let alone now in my decrepitude, to attempt higher difficulties or do well at most of the target range stuff. But I agree that they really should keep the additional objectives as part of the difficulty setting - that feels really Perfect Dark-y to me (although GoldenEye did it first).
Also counter-op mode, which feels like it's gotten a bit of a modern twist in Deathloop by the sounds of it.

I don't think that's on PC sadly. I have no xbox of any description.

Original Perfect Dark on the N64, Elvis with both big head mode and tiny body mode enabled was one of the funniest things I'd ever seen at the time.

I thought it was 2-3 years away even without any reported trouble in development, just because MS hasn't been talking about it.
Hellblade 2 has been shown off several times and is likely to be another 18 months away.
Fable just had a nice trailer but probably won't be out till 2025.
We've seen and heard nowt about PD since its announcement. I just hope it'll be here by 2026...

Matt Booty said the current lead on the game expects them to show it off no later than next year's Not E3.

Which would still kind of track, they seem to have a far-off announcement, then an "in-game" trailer, and it still be two years before the game is released.
I imagine Fable will be an autumn/winter '25 release, so seeing PD next summer would make sense for an autumn/winter '26 release.
Christ, I hate looking this far into the future. I'm gonna be pushing 50 before I play some of these games.

I have an N64 which I rescued from a skip which included 3 controllers and a load of games including this, Majoras mask, Goldeneye, Smash, Diddy Racing and a few others of little worth.
Perfect Dark is the perfect example of a game that has aged so poorly that it's nigh unplayable by today's standards.

I still play the 360 version pretty regularly and it holds up well.
I think the main issue - for me at any rate, maybe I'm stupid - is the levels and objectives can become a little confusing. I think this is one area where modern games have improved a lot.
The actual core gameplay holds up perfectly though.

Yeah, I find Perfect Dark and Goldeneye just as fun today as back when they were new. Maybe moreso because the framerate’s been improved.
