I also felt MGS3 was a relief in terms of the cutscene - codec - gameplay balance after MGS2. At least that's what I recall. Perhaps this is an illusion and just the result of long stretches of hiding and faffing as starchildhypocrethes put it (I enjoyed the hiding and faffing, though I drew the line at hunting for squeaky toy frogs or whatever it was).

So, setting aside that some people in this thread have said it's the worst one, the usual take is that MGS3 is the best in the series. What makes it so good (without spoilers)? I enjoyed 5 a lot (but never finished it). I didn't mind the story, at least I found the cutscenes entertaining Was more or less ignorant of the first game at the time (Nintendo/PC then) but I don't think it holds up beyond being some interesting ideas for the time that haven't aged well. I've completed 2 at some point, which was alright As an aside, I always wonder what it's like to be the original creator with something like this, seeing other people remaking your game without any input or involvement The End. I mean the boss fight. Brilliant. But also, the end. It wraps up really well, which was a relief after the woeful guff of MGS2. Also, what snackplissken said about the ladder It is the little things. When you could change the PS2 clock forward, so The End could die. Also you could attempt to pop him off with a sniper rifle early on, which to this day I haven't managed

Yep! I tried the early snipe too and completely failed. Which is just as well, as I enjoy the battle so much. There's also the parrot. If his parrot is killed, The End will find it more difficult to track Snake's movements. However, this will make him enraged and more aggressive....However, if his parrot is captured and then released, it will give away his position on the Directional Mic even more so than his breathing. (that's a cut and paste from the wiki as I'm lazy) That's the kind of Kojima madness I enjoy, rather than the narrative excesses (however prophetic...)

I really love some of the totally irreverent, optional, radio conversations.
This one made me laugh a lot. Especially Snakes deadpan response towards the end (no spoilers)

I remember being sucked into all the hype and buying MGS. I didn't like the wierd fixed camera or the shift to an 'aim-only' 1st person for shooting. It just felt really shit to play and just dull as fuck.
Never touched another after that.
Much preferred splinter cell that came along later

To be fair all of them require a decent amount of investment before they really feel comfortable to play. They’re not intuitive at all and they’re sort of game where pressing the wrong thing completely fucks you, which will happen frequently. I can completely understand how people bounce off them.

MGS2 is probably the one I struggle more with going back to, due to the fixed camera angle. But that's more upping the difficulty and knowing when to hide, and when to sneak. MGS3 without the fixed is a piece of piss.

Yeah, MGS2 had quite a learning curve with all the new moves - stick ups, CQC etc. It did feel like finger gymnastics at times. But that first part of the game - the tanker - was one of the best gaming experiences of my life. I couldn't quite believe what I was doing and seeing.
The ice in the ice buckets melted, for God's sake.

Yeah it’s hard to remember sometimes but the first two were absolute envelope pushers for their systems on release. I don’t think I’d seen graphics as good as the rain and the tanker at the time of MGS2 and the first one really did sell the arctic environment. It felt cold. 3 seemed dull as ditchwater in comparison, visually and gameplay wise. . Got on better with it when it was updated and appreciated all the Cold War aesthetic and story. And whilst the tanker section of 2 was impressive, once your reached Big Shell it was visually a bit repetitive - very smooth and slick but the same textures. MGS3 offered more variety in terrain types.

The E3 trailer for MGS2 actually was a massive talking point, one of those moments where the leap in advancement in graphics and detail seemed like sci fi Will they go the full route with the 1:1 remake and do the multiplayer mode as well? No chance

Yeah I’m aware she’s not Cynthia Harrell. I looked up that singer on other YT vids and she’s annoying as hell in her day job/original stuff.
It’s the Video Game Orchestra, always keep an eye out for a similar event but have never been lucky. Always miss Hans Zimmer in a similar vein.
EDIT - have seen that article before too. Have been taken by this song for a long time!
The moment when it cameo’d in 4 during the duel was goosebumps stuff.

MGS3 offered more variety in terrain types. Objectively I agree but on release it looked somewhat unremarkable - to me, subjectively. Probably a pallete thing I dunno. But it was just very brown and muddy. MGS2 had that sheen. I get it that it is easier to push a flatter metallic or concrete texture but I was young and dumb. It was several years later before I bought and finished it, and yes it was a better game than 2.

Man, I first played mgs3 on my mate's chipped PS2 at uni BUT the American version so it was allllll black and white as a result. I have no idea how I completed that.

The first two games also came at a time when CGI was still relatively exiting so the massive cut scenes were kind of a treat. The opening section of MGS2 in particular was really state of the art.

Five is the one I got on best with As A Game. It really clicked with me and enjoyed just playing it far more than any of the others.
The size, scope and general insanity obviously isn’t up there with the rest of them but it is the one that don’t feel like you’re fighting for control of the game all the time.

I do find with all of them that there’s a huge amount of trial and error, and replaying bits over and over. Which is kind of par for the course with stealth games but even V never quite had the fluidity and adaptability that games like Splinter Cell or Hitman have.
Haven’t heard much about the Splinter Cell remake for a while but I’m excited for that.

I do agree with that, to a degree, the actual gameplay mechanics in 5 are the best the series has been.
Unfortunately the story feels very much incomplete, and the two biomes, whilst pretty cool initially started to get a bit samey towards the end. It could have done with more variety. I wasn't a fan of the currency and upgrade system in 5.
Ground Zeroes was also better than the Phantom Pain, there was nothing quite like that base in PP.
That insanity and story telling is a pretty important aspect of the metal gear games though, so because of that it's not my favourite.

I enjoyed the Sahelanthropus fight, but I agree it could've done with more encounters along those lines. Still loved it, though, and it was the first game that really meant something to me.
I doubt I would've given Death Stranding a second glance when that came out, were it not for how important The Phantom Pain was to me, and I ended up loving DS too.
