The original Beyond Good and Evil is so old it's pretty accessible via emulation, can Ubisoft top emulated versions of the original? Probably not.
At this point I can only think of Lucasart's Loom as ending on more of an unresolved sequel tease... Well there's Shenmue of course. I'd rather Ubisoft just give up, after all this time anything they do would be a disappointment.

The HD version you can play backwards compatible on the Series X/S, and I completed it a few years back with no issues. Not sure why they don't just pump that out to the PS5.

Speaking of arcade racers, I bought Burnout Revenge last week and I'm baffled as to why the Burnout games have never been remastered other than Paradise which I don't really care for due to it's open world structure. I think you lose a lot by having courses made from sections of the open world which doesn't have a lot of visual variety.

I can't understand why Burnout 3 hasn't had a remake yet. Easily the best in the series that still holds well. Would have even taken it being BC on Xbox.

Yeah Burnout 3 is brilliant l. I guess EA don't like free money plus I'm amazed they still continue with NFS which seems to die with irrelevance every iteration. Just bring back Burnout you cowards!

I think I played a Burnout game back on the gamecube (maybe?)
But I did just grab Burnout Paradise Remastered on the switch and it'd great fun. Looks really amazing for a Switch game running at 60fps. Can't really compare it to the old ones as I don't remember it that well, but burning across the city in races and taking down other racers is still great fun.
Missed the BG&E remaster shots, but that along with Sands of Time, is one where I'd like just an HD version, with maybe updated character models for SoT.

EA don't seem to be too keen on exploiting back catalogue most of the time, when Ubisoft was dropping low effort HD collections in the PS3 era EA wasn't really doing anything.
Maybe Burnout just doesn't fit in, when they might prefer to focus on their own Need for Speed arcade racer brand. It's kind of annoying to see Burnout Paradise as the only one getting releases for current platforms when it's not even really a proper Burnout game.

This is cool. Nightdive bringing the same level of dedication to the Dark Forces remaster as they brought to Quake II.

Now that I think about it, there's one remaster I'd want above all else: Riven in 4K quality.
When I first saw that game on a CRT, it looked unfathomable to me. Now, the design still looks good but the low resolution is obviously is an eyesore.

Riven is completely pre-rendered assets though isn't it? Unless some sort of AI upscale would be acceptable it might be easier to just live with an upscaling filter and squint a bit.
For some reason source files that could be used to generate new renders never seem to turn up so all these 90s games with pre-rendered assets tend to stay looking like games with umm... 90s pre-rendered assets.
The one that really impressed me was the HD version of LeChuck's Revenge, everything looks just right. I suspect that's due to the original game assets being paintings and illustrations scanned again to generate new 1080p assets.

Yea, but I was hoping that maybe Cyan pre-rendered the images at a much higher resolution before downscaling them to 640x480. In which case, if they still had the original files, there might be a chance. Besides, looks like i'll get my wish. I didn't know the Riven remake was actually real. Sounds like it's based on the work by the Starry Expanse Project team. Very nice. www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrjeQBUzhB0Even if a small part of me would rather see super-high resolution stills, instead of a 3D world....

Interesting, there was already a 3D remake of the original Myst back in the early 2000s. Yeah, there are so many games from that period that I'd love to see updated with the 240p and 480p assets swapped out for something better. For instance, Dark Seed isn't a particularly good game but the artwork is interesting so it would be great if there were higher res assets somewhere out there. I suspect complications with the Giger estate might hinder an official remaster.

For instance, Dark Seed isn't a particularly good game but the artwork is interesting so it would be great if there were higher res assets somewhere out there. I suspect complications with the Giger estate might hinder an official remaster. Yes, Realmyst. I like it. Despite the simpler graphics, imo it was better than the Realmyst Masterpiece Edition that they made many years later (whereas the newer remake looks different enough that it's almost its own game). One thing that always did bother me about Myst remakes is that they never actually looked like the original. Most people seem to forget how primitive the visuals in Myst actually were, next to later adventures, I mean. The trees were literally trasparent cones ffs. I can understand why a remake, even one from the early 3D era, would look more detailed. But it's still not the same thing. None of the remakes really captured that otherwordly feeling. In comparison, Riven looked like a game three generations apart. Hence, a 3D remake would have no need to change things that much. What I see in that video looks quite close to the original indeed. Let's hope they stick with it.

I don't recall what number it was, but the Myst with Brad Dourif in it came free with some hardware I bought back in the day, and at the time I thought the water effects in it were the most stunning thing I'd ever seen in a game.

I imagine they rendered the scenes in low res at the time because the rendering would have taken ages back then.
I never really played the Myst/Riven type games (or at least I never got very far in them), but it occurs to me that they might be very good candidates for VR remakes. Especially with the teleporting movement.
PS/ That Dark Forces remake looks surrisingly good. Though there's a bit of a weird disconnect between the smoother 3d walls and the very blocky 2d weapon and enemy sprites. I feel like they should boost the resolution of those in the 3d renderer mode. Not smooth them, but just double the number of pixels so they still look pixelated, but a bit higher res.

I imagine they rendered the scenes in low res at the time because the rendering would have taken ages back then. That was mainly a limitation of playing video files off CD-ROMS. Video CDs were actually thing, in Asia mainly, I've never actually seen one. We went straight from VHS to DVD.
Also the average PC of that period struggled to maintain decent frame rates at 640x480, so lots of assets were incredibly low res. Take a look at the original Dungeon Keeper for instance, 1996 and it looks rougher than a PS1 game.

I had From Dusk til Dawn on VCD. It kept crashing after the first 10 minutes, so I saw that first ten minutes a dozen times until I upgraded my PC. Turned out it wasn't the kind of movie I thought it was

Myst 3, it was also the first one with a full spheric panoramic view. I remember the first time seeing it, and thinking it would be impossible for any videogame to ever look better. Another time a couple years later, I was at a store, looking (admittedly from some distance) at a TV that was playing GT3 in replay camera. For a second, I actually thought it was a real race. I don't believe it's ever happened again, at least not as far as I can recall. Even games with ridiculously good graphics like Crysis left me somewhat cold, in a "sure it looks great, but future games will look even better, so whatever" sort of way. Some games with special art styles can still wow me, but at this point I don't think I'll ever feel like I did back then.

I definitely wouldn't say no to a Grandia HD Collection. They're lovely games and perfect as an entry point to JRPGs or for people who get totally burnt out when games have far too much padding just to hit that minimum 60 hour play time.

Because I just watched the show and I want to spend more time in Middle-Earth, they should remaster Lord of the Rings: The Third Age from the PS2. FFX but with dwarves and elves.
