Anyone else like NRW? For me it's a weird amalgamation of music I heard all around me when I was a kid, but later never listened to, and videogame synth tunes of the 80s and early 90s.

Sounds like something Alan Partridge would listen to

I thought it was called synthwave, or is this something different? I'm old and get confused easy.

Yeah synthwave's what I call it, but anything with an 80s electronic vibe and I'm in. Recently had this on rotation:

Eh, it's mostly wanking over pecularities. Synthwave is synth pop and new wave combination, retro wave is synthwave with a more retro sound. I've discovered it first as new retro wave, so that's what I'm calling it, but to be honest, I don't think an old retro wave even exists. Maybe the new comes from new wave as well, so new retro wave could be new wave, but retro.

And here's my best attempt at making a synthwave track in Dreams:

Pretty dope. Could need some more variation, or maybe be shortened a bit here and there, but I really like it for zoning out to.

I've kind of drifted away from it in the last few years as it's gone a bit stale for me but i was listening to it for years. oh god, it's been nearly 10 years since the "80's Dream Compilation Tape"! It's still one of my favorites after all this time and well worth a listen even now. "Hot Hot Hawk - Space Traveler" was on tons of my playlists for years. The problem is that i like a bunch of tracks by the artists but very few full albums keep my interest on repeated plays as the tracks can be a bit repetitive with little audio variation and a little too long so i end up making compilations or listening to mixes instead.

I'll always have a fondness for this too - Hungarian Synthwave Allstars Compilations. hungariansynthwaveallstars.bandcamp.com/album/hungarian-synthwave-allstars-vol-1Slightly off topic but related as it's "Future Funk" or whatever it's called but if you like Retrowave then there's a good chance you'll like the Paradise Killer Soundtrack. It's amazing, especially the vocal track. Of course helping NRW get a boot was the legendary Hotline Miami. So check out that OST too. M|O|O|N was on my playlists for years. oh and LORN. I might have to paste a ton of links in the "What are you listening to" thread. Sovietwave playlist is like the 80s Goth never died mixed with synthpop tracks, i live them. they're great for work where lyrics i can't understand are preferable to stuff i can as it remains in the background. Other genres i listen to and thought about creating a thread for but i'm too lazy are Dark wave, Soviet wave, vapor wave, seapunk, Witch House, and things like Cold wave/minimal wave etc which are pretty much similar. From Future Funk, you can go to City Pop. Then there's my daliance with Space Ambient (Jedi Master's Playlists are amazing). I have soooo many youtube subscriptions for those things, lol.

Splendid thread. How do you feel about “darkwave”? I love a bit of Perturbator or Carpenter Brut. youtu.be/Uk3n-CkQao8

I believe New Retro Wave is the label. There artists include the folks on that playlist, but s couple of notable releases include Alex & Tokyo Rose's Akuma series, and Zombie Hyperdrive. Alex & Tokyo Rose's released Akuma III recently, it's pretty cool, still synth/darkwave but has a massive 90's acid house and rave influence it seems. newretrowave.bandcamp.com/album/akuma-3The label itself released a new compilation recently called GODWAVE newretrowave.bandcamp.com/album/godwave

I also second Zombie Hyperdrive. Midnight Danger, Slvmber and Ray Gun Hero are also worth checking out.
Can't recall who is on NRW but also listen to Kick Puncher.

How did I miss Akuma 3 being out? /shakes fist at Apple Music
Turns out a lot of music I like is on NRWR: Deadlife, Stillz, ORAX, Lukhash, Judge Bitch, all good stuff. Have lost track about what all this -wave business is about though, seems increasingly meaningless. Have gone off Perturbator of late though, he is now sounding like Tear for Fears circa 1986.
