It's possible that the indexing is misaligned, ie position 2 on the shifter is lined up with 1 on the cassette, 3 with 2, 4 with 3 etc etc, and the limit screws are acting as the stop when dropping to 1 - but it's bloody hard to diagnose without seeing and any advice will likely have you sitting in a pile of bike parts screaming curses at my very name.
Quickest temporary fix is to stop using gear 1

Indexing seems fine to be honest, every other gear is clicking through nicely. But yeah I just haven't been using it. It's hilly as fuck round here though so it would be nice to have it as an option.

I mean, it’s like I’m spaffing STELLAR advice into a black hole here. The above underpins everything else and needs to be correct first. Check it Then you set the cable tension with the barrel adjuster.

Yeah I've done that, they both look aligned to me. What I'm struggling with is I can either get the first gear to go in and the top gear be noisy, or the top gear to be quiet and the first gear to jump out. I think I just need to find the sweet spot with the tension to be honest but I'll be fucked if I can.

Noisy top gear is usually b-screw needs fiddling with, this used to be some really stupid japanese screw for ages, now I think it's a 2mm hex, rubbish but better.

Fuck me, definitely time to break out the winter clothes. It's fucking freezing up in the hills round here.

It's been really windy here (near Winchester). Riding when it is windy sucks. Lovely so far today though.
I keep meaning to get on with winterising my road bike, the mudguards I bought are hanging up in the garage but while the weather holds I'd rather get the miles in.

Just finished a 70k there which was pretty grim. The wind was cutting right into my soul by the end. Think I'm going to have to dig my balls out of my chest with a wire coat hanger.

Just grovelled my way round 70k in the wind with 6kg strapped to my back. Luckily the suns out or I’d be miserable

I had to drop and collect some shoe stuff at a guy who works for me in St Albans, I normally drive if I’ve got a box of wood and leather to take up but it’s carnage out there still

Jesus. I managed 100k last week, and that was a bloody good one for me. Not managed jack shit this week, between last minute wedding fucking around and a few hospital/doctor's appointments. Feel crap for it as well. Bike's fucked now though, moved through the rear gears just fine, but switching up through the front three needs me to yank push the selector them push again - I presume that's a tension thing?
It's a bog-standard thing, if I stick with it through winter I might splash on something properly decent for next summer.

I have some padded leggings, wind&water-resistant long sleeve jersey and gloves for these kind of things. Get some of that shizz if you don't have any, helps a lot. I still hope for a run or two out on the bike before mid-october, but the indoor cycing shit has certainly been ramping up again of late, so maybe not. I really am *such* a fair-weather cyclist.

I got accredited and then immediately my wife started pushing out babies and I moved out of London. I never raced, but the process of accreditation and the few open sessions I attended were great fun.

The electrotank fears no headwind. Downhill in the slop on a 26kg brick, though? I fear that.

Not much point having a separate indoor training thread I'd have thought.
