I still have a poke at some, and used to do well on the downhill ones, but have decided to stop being a knobhead in traffic and cut that risk out. More of a puncheur type, if anything, so uphill one’s aren’t going to happen which leaves flat KOM’s and, yeah, did a few chain gangs this year and the breezy 45kph group pace on some sections made me realise how impossible it’ll be to do anything competitive solo. I just pick a segment on a ride and try to beat my own time now 🤷

I did have one which was a road I pass when nearly back home, about a minute hard effort, 1 or 2 degrees upwards. Just grabbed the KOM on the way back from a ride, got home, washing the bike etc and got an email “uh, oh, someone’s got your KOM’. Looked at the ride and the little fucker had obviously lycra’d up immediately, done a couple of laps to warm up and then grabbed it back before riding home, about a 3k ride 😁

The tour of Britain destroyed any hopes of mine of getting on any KOM lists. They went on quite a lot of the roads I usually cycle on. Not like I was nearing the top of them anyway😂

As long as I have my friends who I cycle with beat, i count that as the most important victory

It’s defo the case that, if you get back from a ride at 11am and are the fastest on that sector today THAT FACT DOESNT CHANGE EVEN THOUGH OTHER PEOPLE WILL CARRY ON RIDING IT FOR THE REST OF THE DAY

Waits for a 20mph tail wind and goes out for short rides to take your KOMs. Fair enough, if that makes him happy I guess.

Getting nagged at to buy a Peloton. I'm holding firm because I think it's insanely expensive with a crazy subscription price, and I'd rather have the option to move it away when not in use.
I've been trying to get alternatives such as wahoo core, but she doesn't seem to keen on the idea.. Anyone got any alternatives that aren't going to make me poor?

I suspect it’s the yoga-panted lifestyle wrapping that’s selling it? It is an absolute rip off and you be able to get a kickr core AND road bike to use on it that you could also use outside for the price.
If it’s got to be an indoor specific exercise bike thing then the wattbikes are excellent and then you’d chuck £13/month on for Zwift, which might appeal enough.

Yeah basically being able to use the screen to swivel round for yoga etc. I said that just use an ipad stand or the TV! we've got loads of space.
I need to show her Zwift as I'm wanting to get that for myself. Also we've already got my old road bike so the wahoo makes complete sense. WOMEN!

Not sure, hence the post, gone down the rabbit hole a bit. Peleton/NordicTrack discarded. So it's Atom/Tacx or Kickr bike. The latter looks good with incline/decline capability. Tacx seems good for vibration. Atom is cheap! Looking to hook up to a large 4K display with either Apple TV or meaty PC. Still deliberating! The above peloton post reminded me, have you pulled the trigger yet mrpon? what did you go for in the end, or are you still swithering over it?

Yeah getting pestered by Peleton, my bad for giving them my details in JL. She was hot, what can I say?! But yeah, definitely going down the Zwift route and considering the Atom tbh. I'm just at the gauging space it would take up stage in my build. Looking like a 2022 resolution.
Here's a question, I know Zwift do running as well. Theoretically, could someone else run alongside me virtually (daughter) whilst I cycle (slowly) in Zwift or vice versa? I think my kids would totally be into that.

Potentially, but you'd need to use two devices and create a meet-up. Although, maybe different sports can't 'meet'. If you were both in the same area, i guess you could sync up and meet on the course though.
Kids accounts are free until 16 i think, so no additional subs required.

You can definitely find each other in the open world and ride next to one another, the cyclist would have to barely be putting any effort in though, zwift cycle speeds are massively inflated over real world efforts.

So, the weather has dropped and the truth is, I am a massive fanny.
Looking for a jacket that will keep me warm and dry and make me not dread going out for riding in the coming months. I've got my eye on an Assos Mille GT jacket but at £220 it's way more than I'd usually spend on even regular clothing.
Is there anything I can get for half the price that would be as good or is it really a case of you get what you pay for?

I bought this, haven't used it a great deal in the depths of winter but it's kept me warm and dry when I have been out. Not as nice looking as the Assos though. www.wiggle.co.uk/endura-pro-sl-thermal-windproof-jacket-ii?sku=100688633

How does it hold up on the rain? I'm thinking I can just carry on using my existing bib shorts with my leg warmers so I don't mind spending a bit extra on a good jacket to keep my torso warm and dry. Maybe get some over boots too
Determined to not stop cycling through the cold

You generally get what you pay for in winter gear

I’ve bought a couple of Galibier bits lately and found them good quality- feels like about 85/90% the performance of super expensive stuff for less than 50% of the price. www.galibier.cc/

Galibier make some good stuff, I have their padless winter tights which means I can wear my old bib shorts underneath for double layers. Their gloves are good too.
Generally with winter stuff it’s a hard balance between warm enough and breathable enough not to be soaked from sweat. In winter I wear a thermal base layer, winter jersey polar red alpha lined jacket which sees me down to about 0c

The Rapha winter jacket is the absolute bees knees for warmth with no boil in bag effect, but its stupidly expensive at £270. I just kind of don't go out much in cold and wet now though, I struggle with cold feet after about 90 mins, whatever combination of socks, overshoes and insoles I try.

I’ve got a gabba that’s seen some shit and still trucking, you wince a bit spending the big bucks on stuff but rarely regret it when in need. Saying that, I’ve got a near £200 Mavic jacket that’s rubbish. Effective but so over engineered with reflective stuff everywhere and pockets all over that it feels like wearing a motorbike jacket, reminds me, time to eBay it.

Most of my gear is Rapha, it does the job and lasts well. Plus it’s crossed over the trendy threshold now, all the snooty fuckers are going for stuff like Q36.5 or Pas Normal Studios with a big “P N S” logo across their fucking backs

Gore jackets are fantastic. I tend to wear one of their thicker waterproof jackets (I forget the model) with a thermal base layer and Perfetto LS jersey underneath. It's warm enough for the coldest days we get in the UK, fully waterproof and doesn't boil me once I warm up.

I do really like the look of some of the Rapha stuff and it's quite reasonable priced... as much as cycling gear can be reasonably priced!
I did look at Lecol and Assos and initially noped right out of the sites as think they're too rich for my blood but I wouldn't mind stretching to £230 if it's something that'll do the job

The best waterproof is something with gore shakedry, but the issue I’ve found is there’s no “one jacket” that ideal for everything - best to go for a modular approach and have a thin and light waterproof that fits in a pocket and wear various layers of thermal stuff to adapt to conditions. Rapha pro team thermal jacket does a ridiculously good job of staying warm, I have a castelli rain jacket thing that’s a bit boil in the bag but keeps the rain off when required. I rarely ride in the rain for long periods anyway

Yeah I'm not likely to set out in the rain but it's more if I get caught in a quick shower/downpour. I think I've pretty much convinced myself I want the Assos jacket but I keep eyeballing bits on the Rapha website.
I need to stop fannying about and actually order something
