The peanut butter falcon was on tv not long ago (last week possibly?) and may be on catch up. Might have been on the bbc, but afraid i can't remember. It's well worth a watch. It's on again on BBC2 on 4th Sept at midnight.

Rambo (the Burma one)
It's nice that Rambo was able to solve Burma, like he solved Vietnam and Afghanistan. Bit of a shame that he needed to have some idiot missionaries in trouble in order to actually help, but he got there in the end!
Anyway, fuck this is a brutal movie. I'm not really sure that I enjoyed it. It's not smart enough to be thought provoking, and too grim to be fun. It's better than the one from a couple of years ago, but that isn't saying much. So
6/10?

Boss level 7/10
Quite enjoyed it. I get why people are upset by the ending, but there's another version of the film with a different ending (apparently on HBO). That ending I'm happy enough with.
Anyway, testosterone restored, I better go exercise it chop down a tree or something.

Other feel good films that are considerably better: The Way Way Back The Florida Project (has some bleak elements but is proper good) Begin Again (bit twee but still worth a watch imo) Sing Street The Peanut butter falcon Hunt for the Wilderpeople. (It is always a battle in my house to find these sorts of films, as they are largely what my wife wants to watch a lot for similar reasons). Some good ones there, I would add The intouchables (French version) The Fundamentals of Caring Amelie is always my goto when I need to restore some faith in humanity

Thanks Doug's, I'll take a look. As I get older I'm liking the sorts of films that younger me would be horrified by. Even romcoms are on my list now. I think it's probably the start of dementia. I think I'll go and watch Boss Level and get back done testosterone. Romcoms are like broccoli, the older you get the more you acquire the taste The best ones have a bittersweet element to them that I love

It's similar to guns akimbo in that it insists upon itself. If you find the humour grating, it's pretty much over before it starts. And it did make me laugh that Frank Grillo played the IRL version of that gigachad meme. He was so butch all the way through that he had to spend the whole movie telling everyone else to be more manly which is such an alpha move.
And, god, if you're going to have Mel Gibson in the movie, try to book him for more than one day. He blows *everyone* out of the water in this every time he is on screen and it's a crime he's not in it more.
But, yeah, if you're going to see one 'groundhog day but.......' movie this year, it may as well be groundhog day but an abrasive videogame.

Spiral - 7.5/10
I enjoyed this a lot more than I though I would. There's not a lot to this film really. Chris Rock shouts at everyone all the time and then somebody dies horribly. He then shouts louder at everyone and the next person dies even more horribly.
It's predictable enough. He turned in a dirty cop and everyone hates him. He doesn't play by the rules etc. However they did what I think is a decent enough plot and they have gone for a more Seven type tone and I think it works well.
It's more of a detective film than all out horror. The gore is still there but from what I remember of the previous films I've seen its vastly toned down. Certainly wouldn't mind seeing a sequel to this.
A Quite Place 2 - 4/10
After what I think is a terrific opening sequence the film just does rapidly downhill after that. It's just a concept that is very much a one-trick pony and the terrific first film captured it perfectly.
Don't get me wrong. in terms of filmmaking this is grade A standard throughout. Cinematography, acting, music and sound are about as good as it gets. Even though this film is going for bigger, better and more I just found it tedious. There's also characters making really dumb, stupid decisions to move the plot forward. yes, I know this happens in practically every film these days but I just found it especially annoying in this one.
There's nothing here that's new or original or even taking things in a different kind of direction. Sometimes more of the same is what I want but the concept kind of hamstrings the filmmakers in what they can do. I know they've got plans now for a third film. Call in the marines and do a bug hunt!
Death Proof - 3/10
Proof that Tarantino isn't Shit Proof. There are only three reasons to watch this film.
1. The car crash 2. The car chase 3. Kurt Russell
I watched the whole film and it was almost excruciating to watch. I do wish Kurt Russell would play more bad buys. I remember Prefect Blue being really good so I might give that a watch soon.
Actually, got to admit I really like the way the film was shot and edited. The soundtrack is brilliant as well. If a need a car chase fix, I'll just fast forward to the good bits next time.

Only 6/10 for The Motion Picture?!?! I'd rate it much higher if it wasn't so weak and awkward with its characters. Character interaction is such an important part of TOS, and imo TMP fails horribly in that aspect.

I quite like Death Proof. It tries to actually be a grindhouse film, which were 80% talky scenes as they didn't have the budget for an all-out assault like Planet Terror.

Kurt Russel was good in it, the car chases were good. The rest was a bit shit.
It's definitely bottom tier Tarantino

It does feel like you could replace the Enterprise and its crew with an all new ship and cast and it wouldn’t be a different film at all. Like it has more in common with a Close Encounters or 2001 or Silent Running or something than the hammy space western TOS was at its core. Its like a grand slow big concept piece of sci-fi that none of the other movies come close too.

That's because it totally was an attempt to be an epic like 2001, which Roddenberry was in thrall to. Say what you want about TMP, but it was the only time you had sets and loads of extras like that in a Trek film. It really was a 'motion picture'.

Yeah, it’s my favourite one. Like you say, it’s a movie rather than a 90 minute episode. It’s the most interesting and most sci-fi out of all of them. It really tried to do something and even if you don’t find the story particularly interesting it’s visually stunning which you can’t say about any other Star Trek movie, really.
It’s the reason why insurrection was such a massive let down. It came straight after the best Star Trek action movie and have us some wishy washy prime directive shit.

Its like a grand slow big concept piece of sci-fi that none of the other movies come close too. Don't get me wrong, being a slow high concept sci-fi movie is what I like about it. I would have rated it much lower if it wasn't that. 2001 is my favourite sci-fi film, I just think TMP is nowhere near being another 2001. TMP's premise is basically a rehash of "The Changeling" (the episode with the Nomad probe). That's ok. 2001 didn't have a lot of character interaction, and it didn't try to--it also didn't have any baggage like any Star Trek movie has. My issue is: TMP chooses to have all the TOS characters but doesn't do anything with them. Almost all of them are pointless extras. It chooses to have dialogue and character interaction, but it's mostly reduced to the tedious ego problem shit between Kirk and Decker. In a Trek movie with character interaction, I expect more than that. It's just so lame, almost everything seems to be about the egos of these two guys, and I don't see why I should give a shit about their egos. If at least it was executed well. But all interaction, all dialogue is just stilted and awkward. I don't know. Maybe it would have been better if all that Kirk/Decker crap was cut out and it was reduced to episode length. It would have been much better if anything or anyone else was being paid nearly as much attention as that.

According to legend, after a certain number of days of principal photography (and TMP overran) all sorts of creative input clauses in Shatner and Nimoy's contracts kicked in, and they were arguing over new lines every day with Robert Wise and such. It became a dance of egos.

I'm reading the accompanying novel written by Gene (this is 100% Gene) and I believe it tells a lot about why TMP is the way it is. I'll discuss it in the Star Trek thread once I'm finished.

Vivarium - 8/10 Well that was pretty fucking weird... Imogen Poots is decent (and has such a wonderful name!) but Eisenberg detracts from it a little bit by attempting to play a regular human being. The boy is just plain skin crawlingly creepy at times 10/10 for the choice of final song.

The Empty Man
I don't know if I'm stupid or the film is but I really didn't get it. Thought it was just going to be an urban legend type thing but then it tried being clever, for two hours

Expected more...and almost switched off after first 20 minutes or so, but did pick up when things got 'Freaky'.

Ready or Not - 9/10 Was on D+. Been meaning to watch it for a while and liked it a lot. It’s a concept that’s been done before countless times but I liked this version. Doesn’t mess about, the cast all work well together, it’s not overly gruesome and it’s quite funny in places. Does what it says on the tin, really, and was executed well.
The Suicide Squad - 6.5/10 Was alright but nothing special. Was expecting more. The first half is the funniest (and even then it’s not that funny), and I didn’t think the team worked that well. I think it basically suffers from the usual DC issues - there are no likeable characters and I don’t really care what happens to them, there’s no charm to it, and it’s too long. I’m curious if the Flash movie will actually be able to reboot the DCU to any meaningful degree, and it sort of feels like we have to get another shitty movie (The Flash) in order to do it in the first place, just to get an in-universe reason. It’d be quicker and easier to just start again without that.

Those Who Wish Me Dead - 6.5/10
Looked okay from the trailer and it's a pretty decent film overall. I've not seen Jolie in anything since By The Sea and she can handle this kind of action role in her sleep.
The film has got a supporting cast which I was pretty impressed by. Probably due to Jolie's involvement but anything with Jon Bernthal and Nicholas Hoult will get me onboard. The kid in it is pretty decent too.
The fire sequences are really well done although the way it spreads seems to vary as to what's needed dramatically. Its hangs back when needed and then suddenly it spreads like...umm...wildfire.
The Tomorrow War - 8/10
Holy god! How much did Amazon spend on this magnificent piece of shit? A quick Google search brings back $200 million and it seems as though its all there on the screen. Don't know how much it cost for Chris Pratt's ridiculous haircut but that must have cost a few bob.
This film is utter bollocks but it's because of this I found it so enjoyable. Setups are so blindingly obvious when it does finally come to the payoff, it's groan inducing. There's so many of them as well that I found it laughable as the payoffs were delivered. One to two are fine but this has at least six (probably).
Creature design seems to be a mashup of the Newborn from Alien Resurrection and the bugs from Starship Troopers. I like how they are really bastard hard to kill.
The cast is pretty good. Yvonne Strahovski is utterly gorgeous and hasn't seemed to have aged since she did Chuck way back in 2007. Also jacked-up J.K. Simmons is a sight to behold.
Probably the most expensive tosh I've ever seen but I really had a great time watching it.

Plus we did the whole enemy degradation thing on EG. From impervious to a M134 GAU-17 “Vulcan” cannon to venerable to knives. No.

Yesterday (The Beatles film) Really enjoyed it. Nice feel good film with a fair few laughs and a few moments with dust in my eyes. Okay, so it's not going to win any awards or anything, but I had fun watching it and I'm humming Beatles songs to myself. 8/10 (bought it on Amazon) That might be one of the most generous scores I’ve seen on this nascent forum I mean I love the Beatles and their music but Yesterday is just a massive turd of a movie You can’t help liking what you like I suppose! You want to reconsider in light of Beasties review of Tomorrow War?
