Death Proof

Kurt Russel plays Stuntman Mike who likes to stalk young woman with his 'death proof' car.

Really enjoyed this, some scenes are bogged down with too much dialogue and they aren't nearly as compelling as Tarentino's other films but the car scenes are excellent and do a good job at making up for it. Enjoyed the soundtrack and how they played with the editing throughout the film.

Synchronic

They normally work wonders on a small budget, but the directors seemed to blow it all on the 2 leads and everything else suffered for it.

Really disappointed with this after their previous work.

Yeah. It's not on that level.

After revisiting Anchorman a couple of days ago (10/10 btw) I thought I'd run through some Ferrell/Stiller/Wilson/Vaughn 'classics' from back in the day.

Starsky and Hutch - 8/10
Has held up really well and was better than I remembered, lots of classic scenes including Ferrell and the dragon, the biker bar, the disco dance off, the hand towels, all the chris penn scenes, Do it etc.
Its a comedy film that seems to have been lost in time but deserves more recognition. Much better than the Other Guys imo.

Dodgeball - 9/10
Yeah this is still a stone cold comedy classic and peak Stiller. I will never stop bursting out laughing at 'You're out 4 eyes' and 'Joanie loves Chachi'

Its helps if you really like the actors like I do, but these are both still great comedies.

Boss Level - 7/10

This reminded me a lot of the Netflix film ARQ. Somebody keeps waking up on the same day to be constantly killed in the same manner and he decides to fight back and work out what's going on. This certain someone is Frank Grillo though, so you know shit is going to get fucked up good. 

Very entertaining and would definitely watch again. One of the best action films I've seen for a while. I think Mel Gibson makes a terrific bad guy although sadly, he's not given that much to do in this. Neither do most of the excellent supporting cast but when Frank is kicking ass and getting it handed it to him, there's no time for too much exposition. It just gets on with the action and I really enjoyed it. 

Would definitely watch again.

Jolt - 3.5 or 4/10

This is the anti-Crank! Rather than using electricity to juice up, the lovely Kate Beckinsale needs it to keep her calm. Otherwise if she loses her temper then she's going to fuck shit up good.

It didn't look good at all in the trailers but it's got the lovely Kate Beckinsale in action mode and the premise of the film is kind of interesting. But I think it really is a shocker of a film.

Promising Young Woman - 10/10

There's been a lot of hype surrounding this film. Multiple award nominations and wins and I'd seen a lot of critics raving about it. So I had very high expectations and these were not only met but exceeded. Easily the best film I've seen this year so far. Honestly, this film blew me away.

I've read this this film was not as advertised in the trailer and people were expecting something different. A kind of get it but I think that may come from what people have seen before. I thought this was going to be a much softer retread of American Mary but it's not like that but it is. Kind of. If you're looking to get totally mis-sold a film from a trailer then go to The Assistant. The trailer sells at some a thriller but that's just a day in the life of. Anyhow...

I just loved everything about it. Right from the start you get to find out what she's doing. What I found was so fascinating was why she was doing this and what connected the people together. That's almost as intriguing as what she was going to do next.

Acting is superb from everyone, especially from Carey Mulligan who plays there lead. It's perfectly paced and I thought the soundtrack was superb. Finally a film that, for me, lived up to the hype. 

Freaky - 7.5/10

Comedy horror that I didn't find especially horrific (but it does have a some good kills) but I laughed all the way through it. A body swap film where a serial killer played buy Vince Vaughn swaps body with a high school teen. With hilarious consequences.

It looks as though they filmed this in the exact same location that they did Happy Death Day and it wouldn't surprise me at all if if they did a couple more films there and did a Blumhouse crossover event film. 

Werewolves Within - 3/10

"Knives Out meets 30 Days of Night" says the blurb. It should say Knives Out meets 30 Days of Night...but its utter bollocks!!"

I know I was familiar with the name from somewhere and then the Ubisoft logo appeared and I remembered, Then my heart sank. 

Just a case of getting a few kooky characters, put them into a single location and then hope they all die horrible deaths. The characters are not that kooky and the deaths are not that horrible. Tries way too hard at everything and fails at everything. 



 

Who is this fraud? Doesn't read like a Beastmaster review.

I enjoyed Undiscovered Country at the time (and after V it seemed like a masterpiece) but there's a lot of things that are naff. The racism towards the Klingons from the Enterprise crew is jarring and serves no purpose other than to clumsily frame contemporary bigoted attitudes: the Federation is full of different races.

The director's cut, with the stupid BONGS and Scooby Doo mask, is also naffer but seems to be the only version in circulation at the moment.

Chang is a poor man's Khan as well, and his Shakespearean quotations mostly serve no purpose, other than to ape Khan's classicism.

On the plus side, Shatner is mostly good, the score is great, and the signoffs at the end still make me misty.

I think its because the klingons has always been the enemy and hostile to the federation rather than racism

Jupiter Ascending

A shiny space opera that out stays its welcome a bit. There's a decent cast, some fun action, although lacking in depth. The whispering villain was a bit shit.

Star Trek VI has to be seen for the commentary on current politics that it was. It was made during the collapse of the USSR, and it premiered in December 1991, the same month that the USSR actually dissolved. It tried to send a message that we (the west) need to overcome our deep-seated hatred and reach out. Admiral Cartwright is the immovable hawk that needs to be overcome, Kirk feels bitter hatred but learns to question his stance and adapt. Chancellor Gorkon is actually meant to represent Gorbachev, Chang is the Soviet hawk.

That is commendable in my opinion, It's just that without the contemporary context, it feels off how extremely hostile they are, it doesn't feel like the Federation or the Enterprise crew usually depicted in the franchise. It's trying to represent views in the present west, particularly the USA.

Just saying that even though their hostility is irritating, what the film tries to do is classic Trek. Making a future allegory for present events and sending out a message of hope and peace.

The sequel is one of the worst films I've ever had the misfortune to watch.

It's sole redeeming feature are some beautiful shots of European coastlines.
