I watched Groundhog Day earlier today, wasn’t planning to but it was on Sky when I was flicking through the channels
Even in that there’s stuff that they probably wouldn’t go near in a light hearted comedy today. The way Phil Connors manipulates women into bed & when he’s told to stop by Rita several times but he still keeps kissing and grabbing her, he’s quite a sleazy character overall. He even just grabs and kisses the old dear running the hotel without her consent
Still one of my all time favourites though

Rolling Thunder
I’m currently reading (on Audible, that counts shut up) Cinema Speculation by Quentin Tarantino. He cites Rolling Thunder as one of his favourite ever movies growing up, so I thought I’d check it out. It’s currently on Prime.
A revenge-o-matic (as QT puts it) sees a POW return home to his family where life gets flipped (even more) upside down. After a bit of a home invasion where shit goes down the major decides to take revenge down in good ol’ Mexico.
It’s VERY 70s. Longer pauses between dialogue than you get now, shots that could easily have been cut a lot sooner, that sort of thing. But it was still an interesting watch even if it’s just to see Tommy Lee Jones and his monobrow in an early role.
This was apparently pretty hard hitting back in the day. It felt rather tame by today’s standard, but I guess that’s to be expected. Oh, and for QT aficionados there’s a notable scene that definitely served as inspiration for officer Nash’s lost ear.
7/10

Cinema Speculation was such a fucking bore. It's quite interesting when he's actually telling a story about his childhood, but then it goes into a 20 page analysis of Paul Newman and practically lists every person Newman ever worked with, down to the tea lady. Slight exaggeration, but bloody hell it felt like a chore to read!

The number of films that Tarantino cites as one of his favorites must be well into the hundreds by this point

One of the really dodgy bits about the film though is that that object of Andrew Lincoln's stalking activities was an 18 year old Keira Knightley, yeah probably should have cast a bit older there Mr Curtis. Still not as bad as being in The Hole and baring her breasts aged 16.

Daredevil (2003) ** My Fox-Marvel rewatch continues unabated. I remember defending this one twenty (yeesh) years ago. But it has not aged well. It’s very basic and entry-level as a superhero film; despite Daredevil’s unique hook (he’s blind!) the central story told here is by-the-numbers. That would be fine, except – my god – this is so dated, so cringingly early-millennium. The my-first-grim-and-gritty aesthetic is embarrassingly twee; the hyper-edited fight scenes are borderline impenetrable, and when we do see the actors “do kung-fu” it’s achingly slow; and there are two Evanescence songs on the soundtrack. Back to back. I don’t want to be mean, because its heart is in the right place and I think they really did try. But apart from Colin Farrell having a ball as Bullseye, there’s little to recommend here. (Disney+)
PS. I’m not dissing Evanescence, by the way. I had that album. But nothing screams “made in the aftermath of The Matrix” than a bit of soft-goth-rock.

I feel like we might get arrested just for knowing that exists
EDIT: I meant the child’s breasts but works for Daredevil too. The trailer has Bring Me To Life by Evanescence *and* Bodies by Drowning Pool in it. Its that of its time.

Furiosa 9/10
Just back from the cinema. We thought it was tremendous, both the child actor and ATJ were fantastic and so were Hemsworth and Strike. Well worth seeing on the big screen for landscapes & battles & storms. Thought it was just as good as Fury Road, but I’m putting it on in a minute, now we’re back home wi a cup o tea. Highly recommended
Bonus points for the slightly oity-toity woman behind who said ‘how much more are they wringing out of it’ after the Star Wars Acolyte trailer.

I've just had to check the dates coz I couldn't believe it, and you're right: she was born in March 1985 and the film was in production in the summer of 2000. So she was only just 15, really.
My recollection is fuzzy, but it wasn't just a "chaste" scene either, was it? I seem to remember a lot of sexual stuff going on, which would be bad enough even if it didn't feature Laurence Fox.

I think even for the time it was quite edgy. Although it was two years before Knightly's big breakthrough with Pirates of the Caribbean, so it didn't get much notice until a couple of years after it came out.
I know right, a Laurence Fox film being widely ignored. Crazy.

I can’t remember that at all. Although my overall impression of The Hole in the cinema wasn’t good anyway. A horrible grubby film. That’s quite atrocious and surprising it’s not been picked up on more.

Furiosa
Really epic, and who knew Mad Max could have a more engaging plot than 'cool shit blows up'?
Environments are stunning and each frame is picture perfect. Great characters and acting too, particularly Hemsworth.
Longer than I expected but it was all paced great and flew by.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024) ***** Quite a different beast from Fury Road, this is a broad, expansive epic following Furiosa's life (and I was quite surprised how far into the film it is before she segues from a child to Anya Taylor-Joy). As such, I imagine people who enjoyed the relatively stripped-back, focused, leaner style of the previous film might find it sprawling, messy, and a bit weird. It is all those things, but it's a delight; in terms of world building, visuals, action, and imagery it's phenomenal. Miller is very, very good at this. Also: Chris Hemsworth is fantastic. (Cinema)
Elektra (2005) ** Next stop on my Fox-Marvel viewing. I'd never seen this before. It improves - slightly - over Daredevil by having a cleaner, neater plot, and not over-indulging on stylistic silliness and on-the-nose music choices. Shorn of a few elements, it could almost be a Bourne-style thriller, as assassin-with-a-heart-of-gold Elektra decides to defend her latest targets against the Hand. Despite being nothing we'd not really seen before, those elements are probably where it's strongest; the mystical stuff is very woolly, and sadly the fight scenes are still over-edited and dull (although the few bits of "proper" martial arts look a lot better here; maybe Jennifer Garner was just a better fighter than Ben Affleck?). (Disney+)

Damsel (Netflix)
So, does Millie Bobby Brown have an exclusive contract with Netflix?!!
Anyway, I actually really enjoyed this... There was one ropey CGI shot, and I think music was the worst misstep - it being just too loud and schmaltzy.
But otherwise, Eleven, I mean El, I mean Ellie, is really great tbh, and manages to basically act on her own for most of this movie, with another sizeable portion with a green screen dragon.
As ever Ray Winston is a bit out of place, but his character at least redeems himself.
This reminded me of two things, really - the Descent, because caves and jump scares; and the Tomb Raider game reboot - given how beat up, stabbed, burnt, and drowned the main character gets, while doing a lot of grunting. (We did wonder why she couldn't be more quiet, given in the Quiet Place Emily Blunt managed to give birth without without screaming... Yet Ellie couldn't climb a rope silently...)

Furiosa (Nottingham Imax) 8.5/10 or maybe 9 since the sound design is again a big driver for the film's impact.
More story, but then naturally loses some of Fury Road's taut action. For the best though as it carves it's own path, with a few crossovers with the game.
Plan to see it again, maybe in the mooted Black and Chrome version.
As already mentioned, leads are great value and hope the 3rd film (maybe Max's prequel to Fury Road?) gets greenlit.

Furiosa - 8/10
Really enjoyed the two hours whilst I was watching it but I did feel a little flat with it after the end. Not entirely sure why; maybe just that prequel thing of having to weave into the original.
Thought Chris Hemsworth absolutely stole the show. Looked like he was having a lot of fun. Tom Burke's character was impressively dull. Even Anya Taylor-Joy was fairly one note - perma scowl and not a lot more to do. Still, the extensive cast of supporting oddballs was great fun.
Fingers crossed he gets the go ahead to do the Fury Road sequel, despite the limp box office.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Nowhere near as tight and action packed as Fury Road, but it's got more going on elsewhere. Hemsworth is a hoot, nice to see him sinking his teeth into something proper since the MCU reduced Thor to a complete imbecile.
Main gripe if I had one is the CGI takes a considerable nosedive in quality occasionally.
8/10
The Rookie (2002)
A great big hug of a film. It's just a thoroughly lovely story very warmly told with a great turn from Dennis Quaid. Thoroughly recommended to anyone who likes a good sports flick.
8/10

Heads up. Continuing Japans quest to be the most useless bastards in the film industry, Godzilla Minus One seems to have dropped worldwide on Netflix at midnight to absolutely no fanfare at all.
