Dream scenario
The premise was interesting, Nic cage's character turns up in people's dream and does not do much
but some start having bad dreams where he kills them and people turn against him and hate him and his family's life is ruined
Nic cage is great in the role but I thought how suddenly
there is dream tech to visit other people, how do they make it, stop asking questions the movie does not want to answer, that seemed just shoved in at the end
3/5 - worth renting or when its on streaming

I'm still not quite sure how I feel about Dream Scenario, the trailer certainly makes it look more of a comedy than it really is, with brief moments where it possibly isn't. It's certainly worth watching but the ending is a complete let down and once you realise Paul Matthews really is a piece of shit any sympathy you may have had for Cage's character goes out the window.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023) **** A really cool, interesting, unique interpretation of the Turtles. Making them all real teenagers adds tons to their character (even if, maybe, they do blur together a little bit more than usual). The visuals are stunning, sometimes evoking stop-motion, sometimes scratchy linework, sometimes painterly technique. The action scenes are really well done: there's even a Jackie Chan-style fight sequence featuring Chan's character. And it's really, really funny. Maybe this is damning with faint praise, but it's the best Turtles movie, even if it's arguably the most divorced from the source material. (UHD)

TMNT:MM suffered a bit from coming just after Spiderverse, and from some slightly incomprehensible action scenes near the end, but other than that it was pretty great. Should have got some nominations really.

Heads up. Continuing Japans quest to be the most useless bastards in the film industry, Godzilla Minus One seems to have dropped worldwide on Netflix at midnight to absolutely no fanfare at all. It is filling the top header on my Netflix page currently, lovely

We had a few trips to the cinema around release and multiple watches at home since. Never pushed on her, she saw a trailer and wanted to see it. Has the toys now too, she's just really, really into it (Donny being her favourite turtle). I really enjoy it too luckily.

X-Men 3 - 6/10
It's not as bad as I remembered. Almost feels like it deserves to have a couple of points knocked off for squandered potential, though. Some of the fight scenes are laughably bad. Zoomed in shot of character 1 running in from the right, then a quick cut to character 2 running in from the left without it ever really feeling like they're even remotely in the same place. Vinnie Jones is just laughably bad.
Boy Kills World - 6.5/10
Extremely daft with some of the most OTT violence I've seen in an action film in a while. It's certainly watchable, but the humour never really hits the mark apart from a couple of failed lip reading scenes. They end up overusing that particular gag until it really starts to grate.

Boy Kills World looked like it had potential, but that kind of thing can be very hit or miss.

I really liked Boy Kills World - daft but fun, basically a video game where he clears waves of cannon fodder and then onto a boss.
With the added bonus of H. Jon Benjamin providing the main characters inner voice.

The Voyeurs A young couple move into an apartment overlooking a kinky couple in the building opposite. Shit goes down.
The sort of erotic thriller that was 10 a penny in the 90s. This one twists about with the usual formula, and I’d say it’s worth 2 hours of your time if you’re in the mood for something like this. Won’t live long in the memory, but we enjoyed it. S’on Prime.
6/10

The Beast - 4/10
Sci-fi with Lea Seydoux about the gradual, inevitable march of technology and the destruction that brings... I think?!
An absolutely baffling film. Very difficult to follow because it's so deliberately incoherent. There is all sorts of symbolism and iconography thrown at you and it regularly switches between time periods. It doesn't really work as a mood piece either and there is a fairly endless stream of lofty dialogue which takes some real concentration to maintain attention. Frustratingly inaccessible in the moment, albeit marginally more coherent thinking back across the film as a whole.
Don't think I hated it nearly as much as a guy in my row. Small cinema of about 20 seats and about 1.5 hours in he lets out a HUGE sigh. Come the end, most of the audience left saying "I have no clue what I just watched".

I liked some parts of The Voyeurs when I watched it. Otherwise it felt like the sort of thing Channel 4 used to put on at 1am on a Saturday night.

Godzilla Minus One (netflix)
I'm aware there's a whole layer of Godzilla nerds on the internet who'll take this very serious. I think they'll be happy. It's definitely Japanese Godzilla, not Hollywood Godzilla, and I think it compares well with the old originals I sort of vaguely remember catching bits of as a kid.
For non Godzilla nerds it's still good. A little slow in places perhaps, basic, predictable plot motivations, but it's a good honest monster movie with some pleasing effects.
As a card carrying Cool Dude Not A Nerd Honest it's a fine 7/10. I think the nerds will rank it higher and I'm happy for them.

Interesting… If I recall well enough, there was some good stuff in the first Tmnt film, and then it got worse from there. To be a completist you’d also need to go through the 2000s animated film (flawed, but ok), and then the Michael Bay films (both hateful). Bonus points for the straight to DVD feature length animations.

I like it just as much as the first one despite everyone saying it’s rubbish in comparison. The parachute jump scene cracks me up every time

I watched the three original TMNT films last year, as well as the mid-2000s animated one. I'll try to do very mini reviews:
TMNT 1: sort of reminiscent of the other post-Batman comic adaptations of the 90s, with a fairly grounded look, and it benefits from putting actual marital artists in the suits. TMNT 2: look, it's phenomenally stupid, but I quite enjoyed it, in all its silliness. I don't think it's actually good, though. TMNT 3: rather daft and feels very much made for kids, and the drop in budget is evident, but it works better as a movie than 2. TMNT the animated movie: actually surprisingly nuanced and a good character study of the Turtles, especially as it is essentially the fourth film in the series. The plot is rather slight and the animation has dated a lot though.
I couldn't bring myself to watch the Bay ones again and I don't think I had access to some of the TV movie ones. But I'd like to watch some of them, especially the multiversal mashup one.

The thing that TMNT 2007 got right was they knew internal strife between the turtles was where the fun was at. I don’t think I’ve seen a kids film where feelings had got so bitter. But the wider story was, as you say, very slight. I think it was quite a short movie too, which might have been down to budget.
One thing I remember from the Bay films was how Michelangelo became the single most irritating thing in the world. Oh and pervy shots of Megan Fox as per the usual.

Broke the new big telly in (over three nights - renovating the room has been tiring work and we keep falling asleep!) with a classic from my childhood - Independence Day!
Man, I have not seen this film in so many years but I wore out my VHS as a kid (I remember it had some kind of lithographic/holographic cover) and I could remember every single moment.
Both a great nostalgia trip and IMO a great disaster/action/sci fi with a brilliant helping of cheesy quotable one liners from Smith and Goldblum.
The mostly practical looking special effects still look brilliant and have not aged badly at all.
Unironically I’m rating this a 10/10 on a personal enjoyment scale.

The Invitation (Netflix) - An American girl does a 23 and Me and gets invited to a wedding in….WHITBY. What is going on with horror movies with no fucking horror in them? A big, blank void of a movie where nothing really happens for 90 minutes after giving away the plot in the first five minutes and then somehow the ending is rushed.
I suppose it’s kind of like Ready Or Not but without any of the wit, charm or violence. It’s proper ‘content’. A generic, artless potboiler that nobody will think about in six months.
3/10
EDIT: The girl off game of thrones is pretty good, though. She carries the entire thing

With all the fuss about waiting for a Blu Ray of Godzilla Minus One, how did it just turn up on Netflix? At least it was a proper Godzilla film though. Turns up, stomps through Tokyo, chomps on a train, then back to the deep. Top marks all round.
