Also watched Godzilla Minus One. Definitely the best monster/disaster movie I think I've seen. Normally you're counting down the minutes waiting for Godzilla to show up so you don't have to hear from the annoying humans but this one hooked me into dreading when Godzilla would show up because I did want these characters to live. Also an interesting perspective following a failed kamikaze pilot with survivors guilt and that it's not governments and military branches fighting back but civilians I can understand the hype now.

Can you imagine how annoying it would be if Godzilla turned up and you were lead through it by Ferris Bueller?

Bones and All - 5/10
Luca Guagardino film about two cannibals who fall in love on a road trip. A mash of genres that didn't really work for me. Neither a good horror nor a good tale of love. The characters are quite annoying, although Mark Rylance is a supporting character having a lot of fun.

I never saw the sequel. Was that for the best? Pretty innocuous IIRC. Its on Film4 a lot for some reason. I’ve seen either it or bits of it multiple times and I couldn’t really tell you any specific thing that happens in it. Its not actively bad like the Jurassic World films but it also seems to barely exist compared to an original whose every scene is iconic.

With all the fuss about waiting for a Blu Ray of Godzilla Minus One, how did it just turn up on Netflix? At least it was a proper Godzilla film though. Turns up, stomps through Tokyo, chomps on a train, then back to the deep. Top marks all round. Spoilers!

No, fuck that guy, he's a smarmy prick and a terrible friend.
Actually, I wouldn't mind a sequel set years later. Ferris is a used car salesman in a failing marriage constantly trying to relive his days as a smarmy prick in high school, Cameron remains his put-upon friend for some reason, and they both try to recreate the parade sequence at a Proud Boys rally and get thrown in jail.

Roland Emmerich's Godzilla is one of my favourite bad movies. I'm not defending it: it is objectively bad at almost everything it is trying to do. But for some reason I find it really enjoyable.
It's a four-star one-star film.

Seriously though why no western physical release date yet for Godzilla? Want to buy it in 4k.

It's a four-star one-star film. It's a film I can certainly enjoy despite it being flawed, unlike something like 2012 which is just absolute shite.
2012 also doesn't feature a banger of a Jamiroquai track.

It's because of some agreement/contract they have with Legendary where the western releases limit when the Japanese versions can be sold or in cinema. It's why it's cinema run ended despite it still getting a fair amount of sales each week.

Jurassic Park - 5/5 - (Blu-Ray)
Watched with my 7yr old and he loved it. Helped that he'd played Lego JP so knew everything was going to be ok!
Jurassic Park - The Lost World - 2/5 (Blu-Ray)
Would absolutely not watch this with my 7yr old! It's nasty, cruel and honestly surprisingly dull. I think I enjoyed it at the time in the cinema, but I must have been a bit disappointed. It's possibly Spielberg's worst film, and as a sequel to one of the greatest blockbusters of all time it's borderline negligent. Pretty much nothing works, which is odd as it must of looked great on storyboards. I like the concept, but the script is bad and the execution feels soulless. Too many characters, too many stupid moments. Set pieces that aren't that exciting going on for far too long. Vince Vaughn shouting. I think a big issue is that Vince Vaughn and Jeff Goldblum are the same height give or take a couple of centimetres (I can't explain why I think that). Pete Postlethwaite is great and then just nopes out of the finale. It's weird how Spielberg fumbled this and Temple of Doom, although I do think that is a fun, nasty and chaotic mess, this is just a nasty mess.
I don't think anyone wanted a follow-up where the dinosaurs are hunted and abused in this way!
What's Your Number? - 4/5 (Disney/Netflix)
A top tier mid 00s massively problematic rom-com. Anna Farris and Chris Evans are incredibly watchable and have great comic timing, and it has some big-hitters in support. A couple of missteps but hugely enjoyable. Directed by Mark Mylod who did A LOT of Succession and honestly you can tell, there's a quip about rape/murder that Shiv would have been proud of.

Lost World takes a few liberties with the source novel - like merging the two children into one character and I don’t think the rampage at the end is in it - but all the stuff about the hunters and that is what the book was about and I enjoyed reading the novel.
There’s a bit in the book where Julianne Moore’s character has a shower using washing up liquid because “its all just soap” and I still think that when my wife tells me not to wash my hands with washing up liquid in the kitchen 20odd years later.

And yet Lost World is still miles better than any of the other Jurassic films that came out after it. What a waste of good dinosaurs that franchise ended up being.

Obviously the fall off from JP to Lost World is massive but it really is a franchise where the curve of the graph is that every new film is successively worse than its immediate predecessor.
There can’t be many franchises where the trend is only downwards? Not even any plateaus, just ever worsening.

Snuck in that incorrect criticism of Temple of Doom there. I love ToD despite, or actually probably because of its flaws. It’s interesting Spielbergs instincts on sequels seems to be to go completely nuts.

I forgive every flaw in Lost World just because of the scene transition from woman screaming on the beach to Jeff Goldblum yawning on the subway.

With the caveat that I haven't seen it in about a decade or so, I really enjoy The Lost World. I think, yes, in terms of character and plot it's not great, and you can sort of feel the pull of different ideas; it's not really one film, it's some cool set pieces and an IP.
But those set pieces I think can be tremendous. The two t-rexes, the raptors in the grass, Julianne Moore on the glass, and - yes, I love it - the finale. Plus, whilst the new characters are a bit underwritten, the cast is stacked.
It has Toby Ziegler getting ripped in half, what more do you want?

I watched JP 1 and 2 with my 9 year old recently-ish, and while 2 is definitely weaker dumber and darker, it wasn't awful.
I'd have sworn beforehand that the raptors in the grass thing was in JP1, but not.
We haven't watched JP3 yet, though I have a feeling it's probably actually better than 2.
All 3 of the JP movies are lightyears better than the World ones though, even JP2.

The Lost World was alright. I was more annoyed at the fact Michael Crichton was pressured write it and the novel was so awful compared to JP. I bought it hardback on release as I loved JP so much (book, although I also liked the film). Gone was all the cool science shit and I really struggled to believe it hadn't actually been ghostwritten.

Julianne Moore on the glass is great, but I found that whole set piece a bit dull on this watch tbh. Raptors in the grass is over before anything cool happens. Neomorphs in the grass in Alien Covenant is so much better!
