I genuinely think it’s because my expectations are so low by that point I end up enjoying it

So I was a bit underwhelmed by Godzilla Minus One or whatever it's called. Was expecting something a lot better from the hype (I really should have learned by now). Basically your usual Godzilla film with some very hammy acting and a subtext that seems to have surprised some people but well it's never been much of a subtle subtext has it? and still isn't.

Careful, they'll come for you. Honestly, I enjoyed it for what it was but what it was was a Jaws inspired Godzilla movie.

I absolutely hate all kong and Godzilla movies. Anything with giant robots and monsters like pacific rim.
However due to it being Japanese and great reviews I gave minus one a go. Whilst it wasn’t amazing it was infinitely better than any Hollywood version. That was just down to the characters and the human story behind it. Godzilla still sucks balls and it’s a really dull monster.
Maybe a 7/10.

JP is ok but I'm more into Billy and The Cloneasaurus. Pfft, nothing beats Tammy and the T-Rex.

Jurassic Park 3 - 3/5
So I guess I'm watching all the Jurassic Park/World movies now.
An improvement over Lost World. Much more fun, less mean spirited, and generally more enjoyable. Helped by a much better script and the presence of Sam Neil. Yes, some of the characters are annoying, but not dreadfully so, and at least they all serve the plot and are different heights. Buff William H Macy really creeped me out though. The set pieces are better too, especially the aviary sequence: the pterodactyl emerging from the fog is genuinely creepy. Talking to raptors with a whistle is dumb and pointless, and they weren't much of a threat. Spinosaurus looks kinda goofy, and they should have used Compies again as they're cool. Lacks the Spielberg magic, but Joe Johnston's heart is clearly in it and he does a very competent job.

Red Dragon (dvd) - 2/5
A perfectly competent, glossy, stupid, serial killer procedural with an absolutely insane cast. Ed Norton has bleached hair which is really cool and he's great. Harvey Keitel and Philip Seymour Hoffman have absolutely nothing to do and I have no idea why they are there (money). PSH at least gets glued to a wheelchair, set of fire and pushed down a hill. Anthony Hopkins hams it up even more as Lector and has a ponytail at the start which is genuinely terrifying. Fiennes does his job but the Emily Watson character is so corny. It's really, really stupid, the big breakthrough about how the killer is choosing his victims is blindingly obvious from the start. Other than that it has some quite nasty bits and is entertaining, but compared to Manhunter and Silence of a Lambs its a joke and you can tell the studio is milking it big time.

That’s a JP staple though! Overall the tone is far lighter. The set pieces aren’t as gruelling and dinosaurs aren’t getting tortured.

I dunno, JP1's main point was hubris, JP2 never felt that mean spirited in my eyes. JP3 felt like a movie that didn't need to be made and pretty much all the characters bar Sam Neil were incredibly unsympathetic. Now JW, that was indeed incredibly mean spirited specifically with the death of the assistant. JW2 and 3 just exist and I couldn't even say if they were mean spirited or whatnot as they just washed over me.

I mean people being put in large amounts of unnecessary peril is a staple.
JP shouldn’t be mean spirited is my point. JP2 opens with a little girl getting torn to shreds with a cut to Jeff Goldblum yawning. Every set piece has a very nasty edge.
The parents lying to get their son back as a last resort doesn’t make them particularly unsympathetic to me.

I haven't even watch the sequels to Jurassic World. I just looked up the premise to Dominion.. "with dinosaurs now living alongside humans around the world" wtf! It's like Planet of the Apes.

It's a shame Joe Johnson hasn't made more films. He is one of the closest to Spielberg's non-serious tone, even if he's generally not as good. There aren't many directors that are like it.

They're trying to save their son but they, especially Tea Leoni's character, repeatedly puts everyone's lives in danger even after people have died. It's baffling. Also the little girl isn't torn to shreds.

Ok, their lying only gets 3 people killed? And actually they’re all Mercs who knew exactly what they were getting themselves in to, so I guess their lying made no difference?
Having to call out the army AND the navy is an enormous waste of tax payers money though.

I guess the mercs wouldn't have been as up for it if they knew their client could get them a discount on bathroom tiles.

There's no debating the fact that Leoni and Macy are cunts. Still a good film though. Again, that's compared to the others, that are all shite. Apart from the first one. JP has always see-sawed tonally, but it's only the first film where it actually works. The likes of Jurassic World has that horrible moment where the girl tasked with looking after the kids gets killed in a very over the top and most unpleasant way. I don't mind characters getting brutal drawn out demises if they actually deserve it, but that was a bit much. The second and third JW films I can't even remember that much of. They were pretty shit.

I don’t remember that. Was going to watch JW with the boy tonight but might subject him to Hook instead.
