Hit ManIt was movie night last night and it came down to a choice between this and Falling Down which I've seen countless times but my sons haven't...and I feel like we made the wrong choice. It's pretty slickly shot, edited, paced, performances are decent but, really, once you get past the (real life) hook of Johnson and his role playing there's really not a lot going on here. Apart from occasionally quite amusing bits - the sting montage for instance - I can't remember much about it. Worth a watch if there's nothing else on, maybe. 6/10 Watched it last night too and regret it. Entirely forgettable and too long.

I don't quite get why it's rated 80%+ on Metacritic. Different strokes etc.

I really enjoyed Hit Man.
Mind you, I thought bits were really funny too.

Didn't realise it was a Linklater. Doesn't sound a very Linklater film to me. Obligated to watch it now I know though.

How is Hit Man too long? It's not even 2 hours long! Because every scene feels about 5 minutes too long and I was bored the entire time.

I watched Hit Man (Netflix) last night too
I thought it was decent, quite an interesting premise and asked a few thought provoking questions about just how fixed your personality is

Dune 2 - 9/10 A bit of a slow start, but it just gets better and better. Can’t wait for the next one.
Godzilla x Kong the new empire - 7/10 Mindless monster fun that’s very entertaining. A good romp
Over the top - 6/10 I remembered this being a great action movie with loads of arm wrestling. It’s actually a family melodrama with an arm wrestling tournament at the end. I can see why it wasn’t a massive hit now. Stallone is great and the kid actor is good too. It’s saved by making the arm wrestling tournament at the end filmed like Rocky 3, a brilliant 20 minutes.

This man watched Jurassic World and Fallen Kingdom. See now those movies are too long. Jurassic World is 124 minutes too long, Fallen Kingdom is 128 minutes too long.

Yeah they are too long.
Just watched Fury Road again, 2hrs, not too long. Furiosa is 2.5hrs, defo not too long. It’s all relative.
Psyching myself up for Dominion.

AbigailThis was well made and entertaining enough, but I thought the last act went on a bit too long and the sudden switch in antagonist didn't really work for me. And then what was the point of the "dad" character turning up at the end ? 7/10

And then what was the point of the "dad" character turning up at the end ? 7/10 Well, to your second point, there's a whole theme of parental abandonment running through the film, so the ending shows the growth and development of the survivors, and also just ties a ribbon on the Chekhov's gun that's been mentioned throughout.

After watching Fury Road again last night I maintain that I enjoyed Furiosa more. Both are masterpieces, but Furiosa is just MORE. Need to see it again in the cinema before it disappears.

There's clearly loads of attempts at comedy in hit man, but none of it really landed with me. I haven't actually finished it, but I'm in the it's not very good camp.

Same, tonally it was very odd as well. Just didn't do it for me. I did enjoy Glen Powell's Patrick Bateman impression.

Zone of Interest
Not sure how to rate this one, mundane and terrifying in equal measure (which I think was the point). The cut towards the end of the film was one of the most breathtaking and upsetting things I've seen in a long time and will stay with me forever.
9/10

Couples Retreat
Appalling. There is not a single funny moment in it. Even Peter Serafinowicz can't offer anything, apart from a half-decent gag about his name, Stanley with a C - Sctanley. Hahahahahaha. Grim.
1/10
The Big Sick
Now this, on the other hand, is the best Apatow / Apatow-adjacent movie I've seen. Just a lovely, grown-up, touching, funny, authentic comedy about the troubled beginnings of Kumail Nanjiani's (playing himself) and Emily V. Gordon's (co-writer but played by Zoe Kazan) relationship. Parental love, ambition and disappointment, the pressure of cultural traditions, martial friction, serious illness and the horror of not understanding what's wrong with a loved one: big ideas, but played out convincingly and non-sentimentally with all the right ingredients i.e. charismatic leads, a stellar supporting cast (especially Holly Hunter and Ray Romano as Emily's parents) and plenty of laugh out loud moments that feel germane rather than contrived (I'm still chuckling at Nanjiani being unable to resist his response to Emily's father's excruciating question about 9/11 in the hospital canteen..."What's my stance on 9/11? Oh um, anti. It was a tragedy, I mean we lost 19 of our best guys." He is so good in the movie).
9/10

I’m watching Jurassic World: Dominion. So, why are there locusts? Is this what the final instalment of the Jurassic World saga needed?

There has to be an edit where Chris Pratt gets his hand bitten off.

Underground dinosaur bazaar in er Malta. which they seem to think is Cairo. I wonder if there were tax benefits. Now it’s an espionage thriller. You’ve got to respect the absolute insanity. Syfy channel nonsense.
